The spread of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has reached a pandemic dimension within a few weeks. Italy has been one of the first countries, together with Cina, dealing with the outbreak of COVID-19 and adopting severe measures to limit viral transmission. The spread of COVID-19 may have several implications in organ transplant activity and medical and nursing personnel should be know these implications. The initial experience gained during the COVID-19 outbreak shows that around 10% of infected patients in Italy need intensive care management to overcome the acute respiratory distress syndrome. Due to the exponential rise of infected patients we are now facing an actual risk of saturation of potential tissue donors which can adversely affect the overall donation activity and reduce the number of transplants. Italian preliminary data show an overall decrease of 40% in March 2020. This paper aim at showing how the pandemic affects procurement of corneal tissues through a comparative analysis 2019-2020 related to the quarter February-April.

Introduction: Nurses are at greater risk of violence during their working hours. About 31% of all aggressions towards nurses occur in hospital or in care settings. The problem of aggressions on healthcare workers is difficult to classify, as the number of aggressions is often underestimated. For this reason, the aim of this study is to analyze physical, verbal and sexual aggressions on nursing staff and identify their predictors.

Methods: A cross sectional study was performed. A sample of convenience was recruited consisting of nurses practicing in the Italian territory. The research team recruited subjects from various hospital, outpatient or territorial settings. The criteria for participation in the study were: (1) being registered nurses; (2) not being in an idle state (e.g. retirement). Multiple linear regression was used to identify the predictive variables of physical, verbal and sexual aggression.

Results: The sample consisting of 518 nurses had an average age of 37.5 years. The sample consisted prevalently of female subjects, with medium-high educational attendance. About 90% of the sample claims to have suffered physical, verbal and / or sexual aggressions during their working hours. People with a lower educational level, belonging to the southern regions are more at risk of physical and verbal aggression, while the female gender is a predictor of sexual assaults.

Conclusions: The results of this study highlight how physical, verbal and sexual violence in nursing staff are non-isolated but highly frequent issues, being part of the daily working life of many health professionals.

Aim: To analyze the prevalence of Burnout defined by the MBI-GS among Italian nursing staff during the COVID-19 emergency.

Introduction: The recent health emergency which in the first half of 2020 has seen Italy involved in the management of patients with COVID-19 (COronaVIrus Disease 19), has led to further stress for hospitals both in terms of beds and in terms of workload for healthcare workers.

Method: A multicenter study was conducted. A convenience sample of 208 nurses participated in the study. Between March 20 and July 20, 2020, the Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey (MBI-GS) questionnaire was made available online by using the Google Forms platform in order to detect and measure the severity of Burnout Syndrome (BOS).

Results: BOS-related symptoms (medium or high score) for individual MBI-GS domains were identified in at least 68% of nurses. One hundred and sixty-one nurses (77.4%) had a risk of emotional exhaustion, 143 (68.7%) of depersonalization, and 162 (77.9%) of reduced professional accomplishment. High risk was observed among nurses who managed COVID patients at their own operating unit (RR = 1.27, p = 0.016). Severe BOS risk was observed in 146 nurses analyzed (70.2%) with an increased risk among Intensive Care nurses.

Conclusions: Our results suggest that the nurses during the coronavirus pandemic, had high levels of work-related suffering and were at risk of physical and emotional exhaustion. Further research should be undertaken to establish causal relationships between BOS and personal and environmental risk factors among healthcare professionals in relation to the COVID-19.

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic is causing a global health emergency. Health systems are under extreme pressure because of the outbreak. Pediatric population seems to be less prone to develop a severe course of the disease. Still the information about COVID-19 infection and children affected by cancer are few.

Aim: This survey aims to highlight preventive and control measures to manage COVID-19 infection in Italian Pediatric Oncology and Hematology Association (AIEOP) centers.

Methods: A multicenter, descriptive survey design was used. All the AIEOP centers were invited to complete an on-line survey. Data collection was performed between March 15, 2020 and April 15, 2020.

Results: Thirty six out of 48 centers responded to the survey. All the centers implemented similar preventive measures in order to control the COVID-19 spread and 77.8% of centers have created structured pathways, specific protocols or procedures; 30% of centers reduced the number of inpatient beds and 90% outpatient activity. The prevalence data collected report 14 children positive and 35 healthcare professionals positive.

Discussion: COVID-19 is not spreading homogeneously in Italy and children are less infected. It will be necessary to define new processes and new strategies to ensure safety and continuity of care to children affected by cancer, even in the future, when the lockdown will end, and new measures will be implemented.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic had a relevant health impact in a large part of the planet and there are several studies aimed at understanding its diffusion; however, to date, the problem has not been explored in the correctional setting, with particular concern for the Italian context.

Aim: To assess and investigate the risk of exposure to COVID-19 in nurses working in the Italian prison system.

Methods: A multicenter observational descriptive study was conducted, enrolling a convenience sample composed of nurses registered with SIMSPE onlus (Italian Society of Penitentiary Medicine and Health), working in any Italian prison facility at the time of the survey.

Results: 204 nurses participating in the survey (response rate 49.27%). Most nurses working in prisons (92.65%) were exposed to the risk of Covid-19 virus infection, since they came directly into contact with positive patients (90.69%) and in situations where they were exposed during care procedures in which aerosol was produced by the patient (56.21%). The number of nurses who "always" complied with safety rules for prevention of infection did not differ significantly (p >0.05 for each comparison) in situations involving or not involving aerosol exposure.

Conclusions: The results highlight the relevance of these issues in the Italian prison context and the need for further investigation. The knowledge of the dimension of this phenomenon, unexplored before this study in this context, represents the first step to be able to identify organizational strategies to manage it effectively or, if possible, to prevent it.

Introduction: Half of the deaths recorded in non-surgical patients attributable to venous thromboembolism (VTE) affect those with stroke. The uncertain benefit of anticoagulant therapy has increased interest in non-pharmacological intervention to prevent VTE.

Aim: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of non-pharmacological interventions to prevent VTE in stroke patients.

Methods: Overview of systematic reviews with retrieval of documents in compliance with the PICOS Framework and through a research strategy implemented on 4 April 2019 in six biomedical databases and in the PROSPERO registry. The tools used to assess the methodological quality and the risk of bias were the AMSTAR checklist and the ROBIS tool, respectively. The results have been synthesized with narrative modality.

Results: Seven systematic reviews of different methodological quality and risk of bias met the inclusion criteria. The non-pharmacological interventions of prophylaxis used are graduated compression stockings (GCS) and intermittent pneumatic compression devices (IPCD). The first has no effect on VTE and has important side effects, the second is promising in reducing mortality from all causes and decreases the incidence of deep vein thrombosis.

Discussion: The use of IPCD, despite the efficacy observed, should be reserved, after a risk assessment of VTE and a subgroup analysis, for patients who can derive the maximum benefit from the intervention.

Conclusions: In stroke patients the use of GCS to prevent VTE is not recommended because it is not superior to standard care and can cause damage. IPCD as a intervention of prophylaxis appears to be effective but further confirmation is needed from future studies.

Introduction: In February 2020 the first case of COVID-19 arrived in Canton Ticino. Since then, many things have changed at great speed, especially in health organizations, and these changes have had a strong impact on the nursing profession. The objective of this research was: to investigate the experiences of nurses at different organizational levels who were confronted with the COVID pandemic in the first month in which it occurred.

Methods: Narrative Research. The data collection was carried out involving a group of 20 nurses working in different contexts and roles in Canton Ticino. The collected narrations were analyzed through a thematic analysis of their content using Nvivo 12®.

Results: The thematic analysis of the narrations made it possible to define 26 themes and 6 macro-themes: Pandemic, What changes, Communication, Emotions/experiences, Role and image, Interprofessional collaboration. The results of this research make it possible to understand how a heterogeneous group of nurses experienced the particular period of pandemic in Canton Ticino and which reflections were derived from it. Some of the aspects highlighted can be compared with what is present in the international literature on the subject in order to find common ways of action for the nursing leadership, in the different Countries, facing the need to organize, manage and support nursing professionals in this and future pandemic situations.

Conclusions: The results of this research can be used both at an organisational and educational level and can be the starting point for future research.

Introduction: The internship is fundamental for the training of future professionals during the degree course in Nursing. Therefore, it is useful to investigate stress and difficulties experienced by students during this activity.

Objective: to explore the students' experiences during their internships and identify the possible sources of related stress.

Method: a mixed methods study with concurrent triangulation was designed. An ad hoc structured questionnaire was disseminated on the main social networks and conducted via in-depth, audiotaped, face-to-face interviews.

Results: 177 people responded to the questionnaire. The main sources of stress during training were: "not having adequate feedback from the clinical tutors" (75%) and "not receiving support to meet patients' needs" (65%). The prevalent negative emotions were a "loneliness" (46%) and "impotence" (54%). 11 students were interviewed in depth. 5 fundamental themes and 13 related concepts emerged. The internship is considered fundamental, but there is the worry of not being able to learn what is necessary to carry out the profession in the future. The presence of competent and motivated clinical tutors and a greater involvement of university tutors in internship contexts are both considered important.

Discussion and conclusions: the results suggest the need to identify methods of involvement university and clinical tutors, and the organization of internship experiences in care settings that could be suitable for the course year.
