The article refers to the repeatedly discussed subject of the rebellion staged by Michael, the son of Simeon I of Bulgaria, against Peter his (?)step-brother. The author of the study has re-analysed sources on the uprising for the motives behind the conspiracy and its scope. The conspiracy has been concluded to have primarily been an aspect of the struggle for power amongst the successors of Simeon.

W jej wyniku dokonano dalszych spostrzeżeń pozwalających na hipotetyczne włączenie niektórych z badanych grodzisk do korpusu obiektów mogących mieć związek z realizacją potrzeb kultowo-obrzędowych.

The article touches upon the emergence of settlement structures in the West Pomerania Lakeland including the upper estuary of the Rega and the Parsęta as well as the Drawa and the Gwda, frequently referred to as the borderland between Pomerania and Wielkopolska. An attempt was made to assign periods to settlement developments with respect to the emergence of the borderland. Special emphasis was placed on central locations like strongholds and some islands as well as far-reaching routes leading to Białogard (Alba in Latin).

The issue of the earliest medieval settlement in West Pomerania continues to generate discussions in the context of its dating and spread to various regions. The latest growth in the number of new archaeological sources related to this issue necessitates a new approach to the process of formation thereof. An attempt at explaining the chronological relations of this settlement in the face of the latest ancient settlement is a separate issue.

The article presents the results of research into an early medieval burnt offering grave field inMyszęcin, Świebodzin county. The field contained pit graves, some of which are reminiscent ofthe Alt Käbelich-type graves popular especially in the north-western part of theWestern Slavic Territory. On the basis of artefacts discovered in the grave pits and on the surface of the grave field, primarily as a result of an analysis of ceramics, the graves can be dated back to the mid-8th and the 9th centuries.

By the end of the 10th century, the area of Opatów and Sandomierz was probably inhabited by a small tribe whose name has not been recorded in written sources. The establishment of a gord in Zawichost Podgórze before the end of the 9th century coupled with the emergence of a local cluster of pyre kurgan grave fields may be evidence of the arrival of new settlers from an area east of the Vistula. Inclusion of the Sandomierz area into the domain of the Wielkopolska Polans in the late 10th century resulted in disappearance of the existing tribal settlement structures which were replaced by new ones. This was related to the arrival to this area of individuals and groups representing the new Piast dynasty rule who came from other parts of the country or even from abroad. They included warriors from the ducal team, craftsmen, merchants as well as settlers relocated voluntarily or by force, possibly captives. As they represented different cultural traditions, their appearance has been well documented in archaeological sources. It also seems to be confirmed in toponymy. On top of the biggest number of Wielkopolska newcomers from the heart of the Piast dynasty domain, in the vicinity of Sandomierz and Opatów there could have also operated merchants related to the broadly defined Scandinavian and Russian culture as well as nomadic tribes, most probably Hungarians. The latter could have arrived as warriors, members of the ducal team, merchants or captives.

The elite cemetery in Bodzia (from the late 10th to the early 11th centuries) hosts the deceased of foreign and local origin who had a strong sense of ideological and ethno-cultural bonds. According to the results of the author’s latest research, a large tomb D162 played a pivotal role in the cemetery. It was originally built as a grave – a mausoleum with an entrance from the east. Over time, more graves with enclosures were added to the existing tomb on the eastern side, imitating architecture of a primary grave. The successive burials in which remains of foreigners were identified represented the structural first degree elements of the cemetery. In line with the results of isotopic labelling, the group of people buried in this row is associated with newcomers from the Baltic (Scandinavian) zone. In search of the sources of the idea and, further on, the model of the cemetery, attention was directed at the symbols and the structural elements of royal courts and rural aristocratic mansions, especially rectangular plots of land with enclosures as known from Denmark. In the light of newer research, the most symbolic representations include the topography and structural elements identified around the royal kurgans in Jelling.
