NUMBER OF DEATHS ATTRIBUTED TO MALARIA IN 2010 CONTROL MEASURES AGAINST MALARIA MALARIA Increased political engagement as well as dramatically enhanced funding have led to a 30% drop in the number of malaria deaths worldwide from their peak in 2004. Young children are most vulnerable to this acute febrile illness caused by the plasmodium parasite, which is transmitted to humans by mosquitoes. The parasite's ability to mutate and become resistant to antimalarial drugs remains a key challenge.
