ABSTRACT This case study of Portuguese as spoken in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, describes the intonation of neutral declarative SVO sentences and neutral yes-no questions using the theory and methodological tools of Prosodic Phonology and Autosegmental-Metrical Intonational Phonology. In neutral declaratives, 1) prosodic phrasing of Subject and Predicate into independent (S)(VO) intonational phrases (IPs) predominated; 2) LH+L* L% and H+L* L% nuclear contours predominated in final IPs, while contours with high H% boundary were most frequent in medial IPs; 3) phrase accents frequently occurred between S and V, between V and O and even within S, separating the nucleus from its complements; and 4) an additional tone was possible in association with the pre-stressed syllables of long (5-syllable), mostly IP-initial, prosodic words. In neutral questions, the nucleus most often featured a rising-falling L+(<¡)H* L% movement. High tonal density was also found, with pitch accents associated with stressed syllables of all PWs in both declaratives and yes-no questions.

ABSTRACT Analyzing data from a project carried out during the Covid-19 pandemics, this paper is motivated by the viable transformation that the history of a student with specific intellectual educational needs (SIEN) - and the understanding that the educators working with him have of this history - allow for a prospective view of teaching-learning, that focuses on possibilities rather than the determinations, which would be the emphasis of a more linear, banking view of teaching-learning (Freire, 1970) and development. It is based on multiple theoretical backgrounds, i.e., discussions about specific intellectual educational needs (Fidalgo & Carvalho, 2020; Carvalho et al., in print; Fidalgo & Magalhães, 2017), critical-collaborative research methodology (Magalhães, 2011, 2018; Magalhães & Fidalgo, 2019), multiliteracies (Magalhães & Carrijo, 2019), transformative agency (Ninin & Magalhães, 2017) - all of which are organized within the Cultural-Historical Theory (Vygotsky, 1924-1934/1993).

ABSTRACT This paper presents an acoustic description of prosodic focus marking in speech of children with phonological disorder to identify which phonetic cues can be seen as markers of contrastive focus. The data was obtained in speech evaluation sessions through a task of repeating focus marking sentences. Duration, intensity and intonation on focused words were the phonetic cues under analysis. Results show that prosodic focus marking in speech of children with phonological disorder is characterized by increased duration and intensity, but is not characterized by the use of contrastive focus marking nuclear accent. These results are discussed considering, on one hand, the combination of phonetic cues relevant for characterizing the production of contrastive focus and, on the other hand, its clinical implications. We present contributions for both linguistic and clinical studies in language acquisition.

ABSTRACT This paper aims at describing prosodic focalization as a multimodal phenomenon in Brazilian Portuguese, evaluating the role of two modalities in focus production and perception: audio (A), visual (V), and their combined audiovisual presentation (AV). Five focus types are considered, according to their semantic-pragmatic values: (a) in declarative sentences: (i) IF - informational focus (answer to a previous question, conveying new information), (ii) CF- contrastive (strong) focus (correction of information considered wrong); (iii) ATF - attenuated (weak) focus (proposition of an alternative solution to previous information); (b) in interrogative sentences: (i) INTF - interrogative focus (a new information is requested in the question); (ii) SF - surprise focus (one casts doubt on a previous information). Also, structural factors were evaluated, as focus extension and position in the sentence. After running a multimodal perceptual experiment and developing an acoustic and visual analysis on focus production, results show that multimodality plays a relevant role in focus production and perception. Different acoustic and visual parameters, or configuration of parameters, contribute to conveying distinct meanings, according to each focus type.

ABSTRACT In order to correlate reading proficiency and prosodic aspects, we characterized the reading aloud of readers at different levels of education regarding the acoustic behavior of target phrases under the scope of basic emotions: joy, anger and sadness, as well as in a neutral way. We seek to show how these different reader profiles process pragmatic aspects of the written text. For this, we produced texts whose semantic contexts incited the aforementioned emotions. Texts were read aloud and recorded for acoustic analysis. Raw scores were statistically analyzed. The statistical test showed significant differences across the different emotions, as well as between different emotions and the neutral form, for more schooled individuals. We found that acoustic values of F0, intensity and speech rate are significantly increased in emotions such as joy and anger and decreased in sadness.

ABSTRACT Answering Cavalcanti’s (2006) call to an Applied Linguistics enacted at its interfaces with other disciplines, in this paper we are inspired by an other globalisation, a concept coined by the geographer Milton Santos. Having the internationalisation of higher education as a process that embraces both of our studies, we look at it with suspicion in order to start framing an other internationalisation. To pursue that, we present two narrative scenes that took place at University of Campinas with undergraduate international students pertaining to different academic mobility programs who were learning/learned Portuguese as an Additional Language (PAL). These narratives index evaluations about the internationalisation process at the university and, in our view, reflect limited experiences of reterritorialisation from different angles. Considering the localities of the context, we propose some lessons to be learned and enacted towards an other internationalisation, including some more specific lessons oriented towards PAL policy.

Finalmente, defendo que esses “espíritos de luz” transcendem dualidades (oral/escrito; vida/morte), inscrevem os saberes da diáspora na cultura nacional, bem como desafiam as ideologias do “branqueamento” e do “padrão monoglota” que definem as imaginações hegemônicas sobre a língua portuguesa no Brasil.","PeriodicalId":35332,"journal":{"name":"DELTA Documentacao de Estudos em Linguistica Teorica e Aplicada","volume":"200 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67505626","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
