Brain Gain – Discovering Neurosciences: A digital education outreach project for higher education students 脑增益-发现神经科学:高等教育学生的数字教育推广项目

Brain Gain is fighting the ‘brain drain’ by democratizing information on research and careers in neuroscience through a series of open-access and digital education outreach events targeting higher education students, including online talks, pitch challenges, a podcast and a mentorship program. So far, we have reached over 1000 students and our initiatives have been rated as excellent by participants and scientists. Brain Gain initiatives are proving to be effective in inspiring higher education students, providing different resources on career paths, in the neuroscience field, and strengthening the relationship with scientists and universities.

The Pharmafluence Education Advancement Network (PEAN), a Nigerian youth-led organization aimed at promoting access to quality education, organized a science outreach program for high school students dubbed Science Incubation Project (SIP) 1.0. The outreach event was sponsored by the Biochemical Society, UK, and had the participation of PEAN committee members, school staff, media reporters and 136 students. The objective of the outreach event was to ignite a passion for science among the students and improve their reading culture and mentorship and encourage a healthy lifestyle. The program involved two experiments: making DNA bracelets and the Dice Roll Choices game of epigenetics, which demonstrated the impact of lifestyle choices on genetic labelling.

Before I began my research in genetically modified (GM) crops, I had never really considered the importance of ‘science policy’. I thought of science as this fascinating realm of discovery, where ‘eureka’ moments by scientists created new advances that changed the world instantly. But as I delved deeper into my research, I realized that the situation was far more complicated, and despite the incredible advancements that GM crops could bring, the lack of support from governments could prevent these advances from ever reaching the public.

Plague is an often fulminant and fatal disease caused by the bacterial pathogen Yersinia pestis. Three major historical plague pandemics have heavily influenced human societies, and recent evidence demonstrates that plague has also influenced human biology. Plague is still endemic in several continents and remains a potential public health risk. In this article, we examine the current situation of plague around the world and the different players that participate in plague ecosystems. We discuss in particular the recent research that allows us to understand plague in pre-historical times, as well as how past pandemics have modulated the evolution of human immune genes. We also highlight future challenges that await us in the study of this deadly but fascinating disease.

The Colworth Medal is an esteemed annual award for outstanding research by a young biochemist of any nationality who has carried out the majority of their work in the UK or Republic of Ireland. Donated in 1963 by Unilever Research Colworth Laboratory, the award is made to an early-career scientist who is within 10 years of receiving their highest qualification. Interviews with past winners from 1963 to 2013 were previously published throughout 2013. To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Colworth Medal, interviews with our latest winners will appear in The Biochemist throughout 2023. In this issue, we will hear from Professor David Grainger (2016) and Professor Matt Johnson (2018).

Bioinformatics has revolutionized the modern life sciences and has become a component of many undergraduate training courses and post-graduate research projects. As such, we are seeing more bioinformatics and programming aspects within undergraduate training and so it is important to understand what bioinformatics is, why it is a necessity in modern research and how young academics can begin their journey as bioinformaticians. This article outlines the broad spectrum of what bioinformatics is used for within research labs and provides several resources for beginners to learn how to code and perform bioinformatic tasks.
