Domain Adaptive Information Extraction Using Link Grammar and WordNet
Aye Lelt Lelt Phyu, N. Thein
Nowadays, people want to extract variety of information from on line texts. As more and more text becomes available on-line, there is emergent need for systems that extract information automatically from text corpus. One of the principle challenges of information extraction is the efficient customization of a system to a new domain. Adapting an information extraction system to a new domain entails the construction of a new set of extraction rules. Many recent information extraction systems have ignored the tedious and time-consuming nature of that process. This paper proposes an alternative approach, which generate candidate extraction rules from untagged text corpus using Link Grammar Parser and filter the final extraction rules using Wordnet and linguistic patterns. The proposed method not only reduces the amount of time and effort required to create an appropriate training corpus but also obviates the need to examine many candidate extraction rules so that the system can easily port well to different domain.

A Learning Support System based on Question-posing and Its Evaluation
Yuuki Hirai, A. Hazeyama
This paper proposes a Web-based collaborative learning system, which supports question-posing by learners, assessment from peers, and discussions with question-poser and peers. It also describes evaluation of effectiveness of the system. Based on the results, the system contributed to enhancement of understanding of those who used the system. Although facilities for discussions were not used as much as we expected, we found some functions to be enhanced for discussions support.

A 3D Collaborative Creation Environment with Tile Programming on Croquet
H. Takada
In this paper, a collaborative creation environment for learning activities in a classroom is proposed. It becomes more and more important to think on how learners can collaboratively learn in a classroom, as personal computers are introduced to schools. This learning environment incorporates a typical setting of personal computer classrooms and enables learners to create their own project on their personal computer and share it with others by publishing it to a shared computer. The Squeak eToy tile programming feature is adopted to make scripts for a project and a sharing mechanism of the project is built on the 3D peer-to-peer collaboration environment. Some project examples for this environment are also presented.

Promoting Mathematics as a Tool for a PBL Type High School Mathematics Curriculum - Its Design and Evaluation
Daisuke Yanase, T. Fujioka
We have designed a PBL curriculum for "period for integrated study" using mathematics as a tool for problem solving and evaluated its effectiveness. Students learned two methods, which were how to use differential equation as a tool, and how to choose their own problems, and solve them. We introduced a method using spreadsheet in order to calculate numeric solutions of differential equations. We instructed students so that they would choose a problem that required differential equation in order to solve it. The curriculum was practiced at Kyoto Municipal Horikawa Senior High School in Kyoto, Japan from October 2005 to September 2006. The curriculum was proved effective according to the outcome of students' researches, the results of questionnaires given after finishing the curriculum, and the impressions by the teachers who participated in it. We also found ideas for future improvement.

On Socialization of Personal Computing
Gaku Hagiwara, Kokolo Ikeda, M. Mori, T. Uehara, H. Kita
Education is a typical activity of collaboration, i.e., collaboration among instructors and students. While there have been vast amount of trials using computers in the classroom, their success is quite limited compared with total activities done in school education. The reasons of the limited success may be the cost of introducing computers into the classroom, lack of adequate software, or lack of specialists. In this paper, the authors would like to propose another hypothetical reason. That is, limit of the 'personal computing' as a media in the context of classroom where peoples' activities are more social and collaborative using rich media such as verbal and non-verbal communication in the face-to-face environment. Based on this hypothesis, the authors propose a research plan of extending the concept of personal computing to more social media that matches collaboration in the face-to-face environment.

Wild, Wild Wikis: A way forward
R. Charles, Adigun Ranmi
Wikis can be considered as public domain knowledge sharing system. They provide opportunity for those who may not have the privilege to publish their thoughts through the traditional methods. They are one of the fastest growing systems of online encyclopaedia. In this study, we consider the importance of wikis as a way of creating, sharing and improving public knowledge. We identify some of the problems associated with these public resources to include, (a) identification of the identities of information and its creator (b) accuracy of information (c) justification of the credibility of authors (d) vandalism of quality of information (e) weak control over the contents. A solution to some of these problems is sought through the use of an annotation model. The model assumes that contributions in wikis can be seen as annotation to the initial document. It proposed a systematic control of contributors and contributions to the initiative and the keeping of records of what existed and what was done to initial documents. We believe that with this model, analysis can be done on the progress of wild initiatives. We assumed that using this model, wikis can be better used for creation and sharing of knowledge for public use.

A Proposal and Initial Design of the Morph Packaging System Morph
K. Takemura, Yasuo Shirai, T. Ogino, H. Takada, T. Jozen
In these days, the number of educators who use Squeak in their education is increasing. However, most of them do not have enough experience in teaching with Squeak and are looking for how to educate children with it. We introduce a new system, which helps us to generate new specialized morph kits. This system helps educators to create and share good methods of Squeak education by the specialized kits. We held a workshop using a specialized kit, "animation Morph ", and found that the specialized kit was effective in squeak education. We also compare existing Squeak systems and consider what is important for the new system.

Emily: A High Performance Language for Enabling Secure Cooperation
M. Stiegler
Well-designed security is required to enable cooperation with strangers and enemies. A number of prototype and experimental systems have demonstrated that object-capability programming languages can blend security with cooperation with little impact on programmer or user behavior. However, heretofore all programming languages in the object-capability family have had inadequate performance for many projects, leading programmers to use languages such as C++. We present Emily, a language with performance characteristics similar to those of C++, but with secure cooperation support that emerges from the enforcement of the Principle of Least Authority (POLA).

A Proposal of Indexing Conference Movies with Thinking States
Akihiro Miyata, Takefumi Hayashi, Shota Yamamoto, Masaki Hayashi, H. Shigeno, Ken-ichi Okada
In this paper, we propose indexing conference movies with thinking states. Currently, one of reasons why conference movies do not represent participants' thinking states is that existing ways do not place emphasis on receding participants' concentration and interest. To address this issue, we define MS-Level (Mental State Level) derived from one's beta wave (a part of brainwave) as an indicator of depth of thinking, and index conference movies with MS-Index (Mental State Index). 3 experiments have been conducted to evaluate our proposition using a prototype system consisting of a movie player with MS-Indices. We conclude that our proposal will contribute to a better understanding of participants' thinking states during conferences, and users can find scenes in which participants think well or not.

Scalable Access Control ForWeb Services web

Controlling access to a large distributed service is a potentially error prone process that may negatively impact request throughput and usability. Our Authorization-Based Access Control (or ABAC) URL rewriter solves this problem by providing locally verifiable authorizations and delegation tracking compatible with common web tools. Our access control mechanism is reusable, distributed and meets the scaling requirements of large distributed services. We demonstrate the successful operation of our proposed mechanism on HP's real-time network monitoring and measurement web service, S3.
