Empathy is an essential skill for caregivers. It is often undermined by everyday constraints. While the literature confirms its positive effect on clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction, it remains difficult to implement. A systemic approach, which considers empathy at the scale of the care system rather than just at the individual level, opens up new perspectives for supporting its expression in care.
The complex nature of empathy requires a systemic approach. Empathic behaviors emerge from the interaction between the individual and his/her environment at all levels of organization (micro, meso, macro). This study uses Jean-Louis Le Moigne's systemic triangulation to examine the practice of oral care among dependent elderly people, illustrating the application of this approach.
Empathic communication helps to reduce the complexity of geriatric care. More than just a technical tool, it calls on fundamental elements that facilitate in-depth transformation of the caregiver-patient relationship. What are the key elements of this mode of communication? And how do these tools help to resolve complex situations in everyday practice?
In a context of shortage and hardship for professionals caring for the elderly in social and medico-social establishments and services, the practice of empathy in care, however essential, is under threat. The challenge for managers - and for all professionals - is therefore to find the means to bring empathy to life in care, despite this context. But how? Why and how can management - and ethical management at that - help?
The aging of the population is a global problem. The mortality rate among the elderly is high. In order to develop a suitable prevention plan, we conducted a descriptive and analytical monocentric cross-sectional study of a sample of people aged 65 and over, autopsied in the forensic medicine department at the Habib-Bourguiba Hospital in Sfax, Tunisia, over a 5-year period. The aim of our study is to establish the epidemiological profile of the victims and to determine the most frequent causes of death among the elderly in the Sfax region.

Empathy in care and support is part of a complex cyclical process, rather than a fixed state of a person. A proposed model identifies ten key stages in the empathic process. This approach enables us to better understand and improve the caregiver-patient relationship. Especially as neurocognitive disorders impact each stage of the process in different ways. Understanding this process can help caregivers adapt their empathic approach.
