Conversations on sex and related matters are considered to be private in most Indian communities. Therefore, community-based research on sexuality is often challenging. Considering the paucity of studies on the sexual health of men especially in settings not known for HIV/AIDS, research methods have not evolved adequately. The authors describe the approaches used to discuss sexual health concerns with young men, the challenges faced and the ways in which they were countered. The learnings drawn from this study may provide insights for designing community interventions to address the beliefs and practices of young men concerning sexual health.

This article examines student supervision in social work education using a qualitative multi-case study design. The voices of current and past students at three unique, heterogeneous and diverse field instruction sites in developing South Africa highlight perceptions of varied supervision models, supervisory practices and students’ coping mechanisms when faced with supervision challenges. Insights are provided into challenges experienced by final year students when faced with alleged unethical and unprofessional supervisory practices. This article contributes to debates on the quality, nature, models and styles of supervision, and provides unique insight into student learning styles and coping mechanisms.

The case study explains how the residents of Shukrawadi came together to make their village an open defecation free village (ODFV). The village was awarded the ‘Nirmal Gram Puraskar’ in 2013 in recognition of its ODFV status. The study attempts to review the roles played by various groups, the strategies used and the processes followed to achieve the status of ODFV. In-depth interviews and focus group discussions were used to collect data. The researchers found remarkable leadership and organisational skills displayed by various individuals and groups in bringing about the desired change in the community.
