This paper shows in its essential points the development of spiritual doctrine of divine love in Italy during four centuries (1350-1750 AD), especially regarding religious ambients, some authors and main texts produced in Florence, Venice, Genoa and Rome. The author explains various steps of diffusion of the spirituals ideas connected to the theology of divine love, and indicates some important writers and ambients whcich had a particular relief concerning this topic. A particular interesting is reserved to a religious order called povari yesuati, that is the principal promoter of this particular devotion, especially promoted by Domenico da Monticchiello and his italian translation of an important work of Hugh of Balma, called “mistica teologia”. The povari yesuati is an religious order not many known but very important in cultural and religious world of late middle age in Italy. It’s also mentioned the origin of Roman sanctuary of our Lady of Divine Love, that is also at the present and many important religious sanctuary for the people of Rome.

Storia di un paradosso. Il mito di Giorgio Luti in Età Moderna 悖论的故事。乔治·卢蒂的现代神话

The essay resumes, with new historical sources, the research concerning the biography of the Sienese Jesuat Giorgio Luti, the prophecy of 1491 attributed to him and the exegetical evolution of this text in the Modern Age, published in Giorgio Luti da Siena a Lucca. Il viaggio di un mito fra Umanesimo e Controriforma, Siena, Accademia degli Intronati (Monografie di storia e letteratura senese, XV) 2008. The essay is divided into two parts. The first is a study of historical sources on Giorgio Luti in the Venetian area. The second part is dedicated to the study of historians from Lucca who lived between the XVI and XVIII centuries: Gherardo Sergiusti, Giovanni Cividale, Giuseppe Bonafede and Giovanni Domenico Mansi. They paid attention to the content of the Sienese prophecy for the description about wars and devastation of the Towers of Lucca, the conversion of Islamic peoples to Christianity, thanks to a company of Lucca men and women, attributing a meaning of political pacification and religious palingenesis. Overall, however, the evolution of the myth about Giorgio Luti, paradoxically, reflects in particulary the identity crisis of the Jesuats between the XV and XVI centuries.

This paper aims at explaining exactly how the Jesuati slowly appropriated the Holy Name for themselves, visually incorporating it in their artistic creations. Through an exploration of the uses and practices of the supporters the cult of the Name of Jesus, such as Bernardino of Siena, and the similarly named Jesuiti, a more nuanced understanding of the Jesuati's own reception emerges.

I gesuati a Chiusi 耶稣会关门了

The presence of the Gesuati in Chiusi, although limited in size and length of time, developed beyond all expectation. At the beginning of the seventeenth century the followers of the Blessed Colombini were called to officiate at the church of the “Madonna della Quercia al Pino” in the countryside just outside Chiusi. The friars arrived at a difficult moment after other religious orders had relinquished the post. The Gesuati did their utmost for the spiritual good of the faithful as well as the material good of the church. Unfortunately after only a few years, the Bishop of Chiusi entrusted the building to a secular priest effectively closing the little convent. The conflict which followed between the church, the diocese and the municipality only worsened the situation to the deep regret of the faithful.

The extensive poetic collection of Bianco da Siena reflects the rich spirituality of Jesuates as, under the generic definition of «lauds», there are writings belonging to different literary genres, such as the abecedary, the acrostic, the epistle and the preaching in verse, the mystical, penitential, santoral, Marian lauda, ​​in addition to the paraphrase of prayers. The characteristic themes of «jesuate piety» often emerge in his compositions, such as the repetition of the name of Jesus, the desire to be dishonored, the importance of prayer, the Immaculate Conception, the devotion to the pope and to the clergy. A «jesuate specificity» emerges, intended to spread the «affective mysticism» of Carthusian matrix first of all among the Jesuates, but more generally among the true lovers of God.

Giovan Girolamo Carli, a Sienese scholar (1719-1786), focused on the language of the Letters, usually considered a secondary aspect compared to their historical and theological value. Probably pushed by an anonimous client, Carli was planning to publish the first critical edition of the Letters, strictly philological, supported by insights on the life of the Blessed and a dictionary. His manuscript drafts, even incomplete, are however a precious source for reconstructing the original documents tradition, since he directly consulted and compared different and authoritative copies. Carli's purpose was to celebrate a fellow citizen, but also to prove the Sienese linguistic primacy instead of the Florentine one – as in art historiography –, and propose an authentic style against the contemporary mediocrity.

Composed between 1448 and 1449, the Vita del beato Giovanni Colombini by Feo Belcari was printed for the first time in 1477 and was destined to growing publishing success over the following centuries both as an independent text and in miscellany dedicated to the blessed. It will be the third edition of the Accademia della Crusca Vocabolario, published in 1691, to increase its affirmation by admitting the entire poetic and prose work of Belcari among the privileged references for the Tuscan vernacular and the Italian language. A recognition that will lead to a Veronese edition of the work in 1817, edited by authoritative scholars of Italian humanistic literature, which will condition many reprints of the work during the first half of the nineteenth century and which will persist even later, when it will be included in series very different, between religious and linguistic / literary interests.

Caterina Colombini e le origini della congregazione delle gesuate 凯瑟琳·科伦比尼和耶稣会的起源

The results of new archival research, compared with some epistles of Blessed Giovanni Colombini, allowed to frame the mystical experience of his cousin Caterina Colombini, which matured in the Sixties of the fourteenth century, in a situation of serious breakdown with his family, caused by patrimonial reasons. Caterina succeeded, also with the help of some friends of her cousin, to free herself from the family context and to constitute the first community of Gesuate, so-called because they observed the same way of life as the Gesuati, then in 1371 to equip this congregation with a residence purchased with her own money in the Sienese district of Vallepiatta and finally to submit it to the protection and jurisdiction of the female Benedictine monastery of Saints Abondio and Abondanzio near Siena. Thus a new female congregation was born, that also spread to other cities in Italy, but it did not turn into a religious order, while avoiding the accusation of heresy for “beguinage”.

This essay looks at the specific iconography of saint Jerome in the artistic commissions of the Jesuati during the 15th century. This specific iconography meant to show the Doctor of the Church as the illustrious founder of the congregation in place of Colombini who never was canonized and meant to presents their form of religious life and the rejection of the Holy Orders through the extremely rare illustration of the episode in the life of Saint Jerome: The anticiceroniano dream. The dissemination of this theme was previously attributed to Hieronymites of Fiesole
