Set against the background of the persistent success at the ballots of the far-right party Alternative fur Deutschland (AfD) and recently attempted assassinations based on racist and anti-Semitic ideologies this paper addresses two aspects of Theodor W. Adornos work: the social causes of fascism as well as Germany’s accounting for its national socialist past. Taking Adorno’s theory of the constitution of the subject in capitalist societies into consideration, the text will focus on the question in what way social causes of Germany’s national socialist past are also part of contemporary negotiation processes of places of memory for its victims as part of the collective identification connected to the place-making. By establishing a perspective of social psychology this should demonstrate how capitalist relations of production are indirectly connected with places of memory, via subjective reasoning.

In Spain, alliances of movement actors and parties were founded in many cities after the local elections in 2015, as radical democratic responses to the crisis of representative democracy and austerity politics. These so-called municipalist lists were able to build a bridge between the movement and the state at the local level, but after the end of the legislative period they were voted out of office in many places or are confronted with the contradictions of institutional policy. This article examines the possibilities and limitations of these municipalist experiments using the example of Barcelona en Comu. By linking the empirical results to approaches of materialist and feminist state theory, developments can be made more comprehensible and the structural conditions for progressive city governments become clearer.

The study examines the way in which “Islam” has been dealt with within local integration policies in Germany. Based on expert interviews in more than 50 large cities, it reconstructs how “Islam” and “Muslims” are “governed” in local contexts, i. e. imagined, addressed, activated and thus always specifically affected. It can be seen that in many cities formats of an interreligious “Dialogue with Muslims” have been established that focus specifically on the religious identity of subjects. These interreligious dialogues rely on the creation of intensive personal relationships in local arrangements of encounter and (re-)produce specific patterns of in- and exclusion.
