Software-defined radios (SDR) require robust synchronization algorithms which are suitable for implementation on generic programmable platforms. In this paper, we propose and study a low-complexity digital clock recovery scheme for implementation on programmable digital signal processing (DSP) or field-programmable gate-array (FPGA) platforms. Performance is established in terms of mean-square timing error and the required computational complexity. It is shown that the proposed algorithm achieves a superior performance as compared with the existing algorithms for a wide range of operating parameters.

In most existing channel decision mechanisms for Cognitive Radio (CR), it is assumed that instantaneous channel state information (CSI) and Primary User (PU) activity information is available. However, in many CR network applications, frequent channel sensing and estimation could introduce excessive overhead and reduce system throughput. Channel sensing by Secondary Users (SUs) may also not be completely reliable, and sensing error could result in reduced PU and SU Quality of Service (QoS). In this paper we examine the recently proposed use of historical CSI, combined with Portfolio Theory based optimization to arrive at joint channel decision and power allocation strategy for CR-OFDM. By also considering historical PU occupancy statistics, we extend this method to enable provision of a soft guarantee for both PU and SU traffic QoS. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the improved method in increasing the SU throughput and reducing PU interference, especially under conditions where the PU occupancy and signal to noise and interference ratio (SNIR) is positively correlated.

In this paper we present methods enabling detection, interception and analysis of GSM signals including data cryptanalysis using passive methods. Presented procedures enable estimation of the signal basic parameters, identification of the transmission standard, signal demodulation and packet defragmentation. Next, cryptanalysis of intercepted data stream is performed.

In this paper, a sub-optimum Multi-User Detection (MUD) algorithm is investigated in the synchronous case of the downlink for a space-time block coded multi-carrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) communication system over dispersive wireless channel based on the expectation maximization (EM) algorithm. In particular, the expectation and maximization steps of the EM algorithm are derived, and the performance of the non-linear iterative algorithm is compared with different iterative Parallel and Successive Interference Cancellers (IC) such as MMSE-PIC and MMSE-SIC detectors as well as ZF-PIC and ZF-SIC detectors. It is seen that the proposed detection algorithm is efficient from complexity points of view. The numerical results also demonstrate the efficiency of the algorithm in the scenes of bit error rate performance.

In multimedia transmission over wireless channel, cross-layer diversity techniques, able to take advantage of both application and physical layer diversity, highly improve the overall system performance. Although the optimization of source and channel coding to the diversity orders available from the channel can deeply improve the system performance, low quality image are received at the decreasing of these diversity orders. In this work, we propose an adaptive interleaving technique able to increase the cross-layer diversity gain in the transmission of embedded images/video bitstream over orthogonal frequency diversity multiplexing systems. We construct multiple independent descriptions using a FEC-based strategy, and we analyze the interleaver depth optimization based on the diversity order available in both time and frequency domain. Then, we provide results of the proposed method, and we demonstrate its superior performance in progressive image transmissions. Finally, we extend the inter-frame interleaver technique to video transmission in multiuser scenario. The flexibility of the method is able to increase the cross-layer diversity gain, meeting in the meanwhile each user requirements.

Adhoc Sensor Networks are being considered for many novel applications. There are many challenges while designing the sensor based adhoc network but main constraint is the power consumption done by the sensor nodes. Many solutions have been proposed to save the power of the senor nodes which are based on routing and other methodology. Most of the studies have considered switching off of the radio to save power under various routing conditions and measured throughput of network traffic. Another major task of sensor nodes is to sense the environment or some parameters which can be based on application needs implemented through various tasks and their scheduling. A mix of realtime, critical and non realtime task scheduling has been implemented for a micro-controller having various power saving modes and it is shown that it can provide significant saving of power for the sensor node.

Ultra-Wideband (UWB) communication systems are usually implemented by baseband spreading schemes relying either on time hopping (TH) or Direct Sequence (DS) codes. However these schemes are not suitable to cancel Narrow Band Interference (NBI). Other approaches rely on digital single carrier spreading (SC) or multi-carrier (MC) spreading codes, offering flexibility in NBI cancellation.

This paper studies signal concentration in time-frequency using the general constrained variational method of Franks. We apply this method to formulate the minimum fourth-moment time-duration measure in the time interval [—T/2, T/2] for band-limited signals. An orthonormal basis of band-limited functions with the minimum fourth-moment time-duration measure is obtained. Comparing our optimal band-limited signals with Gabor's function with the minimum second-moment time-duration measure, simulation results show that our function has better properties: 1) faster decaying rate; 2) larger main lobe; and 3) higher energy concentration measure.

In this paper the impact of the overlay of CDMA2000 1x-EVDO and CDMA2000 cellular systems in terms of throughput is investigated. Currently, the 3G cellular systems furthermore to provide only voice services are focusing to offer a variety of data applications such as VoIP, video, telephony, wireless gaming, and push-to-talk (PTT), along with a high demand of downlink intensive applications. The result was a high-rate wireless packet data system with substantial improvement in the downlink capacity and coverage over traditional CDMA2000. Therefore, it results interesting to analyze the possible coexistence of traditional cellular systems which provide voice communication services via circuit-switched networks and data cellular systems. Thus, in this work our proposal is to analyze the impact of the overlay in the throughput of the CDMA2000 1xEV-DO network.

In this paper we propose a gesture perception algorithm using compact one-dimensional representation of spatio-temporal motion-field patches. At the learning stage, motion-field patches are randomly extracted and stored as templates. When generating feature vectors for video sequences, we compare stored templates with video, calculate maximum similarities and save those values as elements of feature vectors. In order to reduce the complexity of patch calculation, we project the spatio-temporal motion data in patches both in space and time spans. Preliminary gesture perception experiments were conducted and promising results are obtained despite its simplified procedures.
