Determining the level of knowledge in managing information among potential Bumiputera entrepreneurs in Malaysia 确定马来西亚潜在土著企业家在信息管理方面的知识水平

The paper aims to provide findings of an exploratory study that examines the level of knowledge in managing information among Malaysian Bumiputera potential entrepreneurs who desire to do business for a living. The study adopted a quantitative approach using questionnaire as the survey instrument. The sample comprised of Bumiputera potential entrepreneurs who had attended entrepreneurial development courses at Universiti Teknologi MARA. A self-developed questionnaire was distributed to 400 respondents of whom, 288 (72%) responded. Findings revealed that respondents perceive themselves to be knowledgeable in all the four components of information gathering, but are more knowledgeable in compiling information than in searching information, retrieving information, and identifying information needs. They consider gathering business information to be very important and perceive identifying information needs and searching for information relatively more important than retrieving information and compiling information. They also perceive themselves to be knowledgeable in managing business information. They are relatively more knowledgeable in using information than in storing information, disseminating information, and organising information. They consider managing business information to be very important and perceived using information to be very important followed by storing information, organising information and disseminating information. The level of knowledge in gathering and managing business information is found to be the same regardless of education level and age. The level of knowledge in gathering information and that in managing information are positively and fairly strongly correlated. The level of importance in gathering information and level of importance in managing information are positively and fairly strongly correlated. The findings of the study will be useful to supporting agencies related to entrepreneurship in Malaysia.

Physical properties of particleboard exposed to the kitchen environment in selected areas of Kuala Lumpur and Selangor 刨花板的物理性质暴露在厨房环境在吉隆坡和雪兰莪选定地区

Kitchen cabinet main material, particleboard has shown some problems in quality during installation. The physical properties of the particleboard panel were tested for its moisture content, density and dimensional changes. In collaboration with Signature Kitchen Sdn. Bhd., twenty-eight (28) houses in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor were selected for the assessment. Six particleboard panels chose randomly from the twenty-eight sites were cut into specific dimension and exposed to the air-conditioned room environment (20°C and 65% RH) and on-site condition (31.3°C and 72% RH). Overall, moisture content was 7.73%, which is 40% lower than the maximum requirement and the density of the panel was 14% higher than the standard requirement. Meanwhile, the dimensional changes in thickness were 81% higher than length. In length, the mean changes was just 0.07 mm compared to the thickness, 0.36 mm. Therefore, all panels collected and tested have met the moisture content, density and dimensional changes specifications under the testing procedures defined by European Union (EN) standard BS EN 312:2003.

Taper pole forming machine by PLC control 锥杆成型机由PLC控制

On the pipe with large diameter at the bottom and small diameter at the top, commonly known as taper pole, the conventional forming of the taper pole is costly and low productivity. Recently, our research on the taper pole roll forming possible to form the long-sized products whose cross section vary in width or diameter along the longitudinal axis. In order to improve the manufacturing method of taper pole, this study provides the investigation on development of the taper pole forming machine with PLC control system in normal temperature. This study aims at development of the new manufacture technology capable of fabrication in the normal temperature without heating, speeding up of a production rate, and easy formation of a flexible taper pole.

Design of ftth monitoring system based on zigbee wireless sensor network 基于zigbee无线传感器网络的ftth监控系统设计

As part of its ongoing efforts to support the nation's call for higher broadband speeds, Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) started to launch the new fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) broadband access solution by the second half of 2008, which will offer users the preliminary step towards the digital home experience. Fault protection became important issues in order to present an efficient FTTH network and simultaneously and provide continuous services to the end user without being interrupted by any failure in fiber lines. The failure at optical lines will give two negative impacts. First, the fiber cut will cause optical leakage that is able to damage our eyes. Second, an interruption will occur during the distribution of multimedia service to customers for a long period of time. In the traditional method, when there is a breakdown in FTTH lines, the engineer must go to the failure location to check the optical cable using an optical time-domain reflect meter (OTDR). The disadvantage of this conventional method is that the engineer must leave the Central Office to inject a laser from customer location. It will cause inconvenience, service disruption and waste valuable time for both parties. We proposed optical sensor integrated with wireless sensor network to determine the condition of all optical lines in FTTH network. This system is capable to monitor the condition of all optical lines and make automatic switching for restoration purpose. Every sensor will be put in every line and can communicate each others to ensure the operation of network. One receiver is located in Central Office (CO) to allow engineer to monitor and control all optical lines.

Integrated comparison of energy efficient routing protocols in wireless sensor network: A survey 无线传感器网络中节能路由协议的综合比较研究

The dramatic increase in sensors application over the past 20 years, made it clear that the sensors will make a revolution like that witnessed in microcomputers in 1980s. Moreover, some researchers have labeled the first decade of the 21st century as the “Sensor Decade” [1]. Sensor nodes are powered by limited capacity of batteries and because of this limitation, the energy consumption of a sensor node must be tightly controlled. WSN life time mainly depends on the lifetime of limited power source of the nodes. Therefore, energy consumption is main concern in WSNs. So, during the operation of each sensor node, the sources that consume energy must be analyzed and maintained efficiently. In this paper, we have focused on features of Sensor Networks, Clustering and Routing and more precisely on Energy Efficient (E.E) routing protocols and finally, made an integrated comparison among these E.E Routing protocols.

Comparison study of Bottom Ash Aggregate and Washed Bottom Ash Aggregate in concrete: Physical aspect 底灰骨料与水洗底灰骨料在混凝土中的对比研究:物理方面

This paper presents the comparison physical study of solid waste of Bottom Ash Aggregate (BAA) and Washed Bottom Ash Aggregate (WBAA) as fine aggregate in concrete. The BAA is a waste material that is taken from electric coal power plant and the basic source material of WBAA is a treated bottom ash. The BAA is fully submerged in clean and clear water for 3 days to produce a WBAA with low amount of carbon. This WBAA with low carbon composition is utilised to produce concrete with less percentage of carbon usage. Low amount of carbon can reduce energy in building, reduce environmental impact and can be supported to green material in concrete. So that, this two types of bottom ash were studied their physical properties and then compared. The aim of the study is to investigate the physical comparison of BAA and WBAA in producing concrete or concrete applications. The results of the sieve analysis and fineness modulus of BAA and WBAA were discussed. The calculated of fineness modulus of BAA and WBAA are 4.93 and 3.65 respectively, which are more than 3.5 and it is considered very coarse. Finally, it is concluded that this both aggregate is potential for utilise in concrete and mortar or concrete/mortar application.

Solving industrial decision making problems using fuzzy numbers 用模糊数解决工业决策问题

Human-based industrial decision making normally involves both quantitative and qualitative input factors. Subjectiveness in human evaluation is unavoidable in the decision making process. In fuzzy-based industrial decision making environment where fuzzy numbers are used to evaluate subjective factors, ranking of fuzzy numbers become one of the crucial component which need to be performed before the final decision can be reached. In this paper, a similarity-based method of ranking fuzzy numbers is proposed. The applicability of the proposed method in solving selected industrial-related decision making problems namely the risk evaluation and pattern recognition problems are illustrated.

Sports facilities development: A case study of Malaysia 体育设施发展:以马来西亚为例

Sports and sports facilities development have improved rapidly over the past decade in Malaysia. Further, globalisation and dramatic growth of urbanisation highlight the importance of sport and sports facilities in cities. There is also currently tremendous interest in sports and a wave of sports investment. This research aims to investigate the development of the existing sports facilities in Malaysia. It is based on quantitative research via postal questionnaire survey. The research reveals new trend of sports investment and sports facilities construction started in the mid 1990s. Image transformation through hosting event and contribute to local communities through creating sports culture have been the centre point of sports investment, which is in line with the National Sports Policy in Malaysia. The findings recommend further research to review and provide specific guidelines and principles for sports facilities in Malaysia to improve future development following the global trend.

Performance measure of academic departments using data envelopment analysis 用数据包络分析法衡量学术部门的绩效

Performance efficiency of educational institution should be continuously monitored and improved to ensure that qualified manpower and research are produced efficiently in meeting the university standard of intellectuals. With a systematic performance monitoring system, resources will be channeled sufficiently and tasks may be completed effectively. Therefore, the main objective of the research is to use data envelopment analysis (DEA) to measure the performance efficiency of the academic departments in a faculty in a public university in Malaysia. Two inputs and three outputs which strongly influence the efficiency of the academic departments were selected. The second objective is to rank the academic departments according to their performance efficiencies. The final objective is to uplift the efficiency score of the less efficient department. In general, all academic departments in the faculty recorded a high level of efficiency of above 90%. The academic departments with perfect efficiency score were considered as the benchmark departments. By means of the reference set obtained in the output, the improvement strategies recommended to the less efficient academic departments are to reduce its Input 1 and to increase its Output 3.

Asymmetric and long memory volatility modelling for Asian equity markets 亚洲股市的非对称和长记忆波动模型

The fractionally integrated asymmetric power autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity model has successfully captured the empirical stylized facts such as the leverage effect, volatility power transformation and long memory in the foreign exchange markets. This study further explores the applicability of this model in the Asian equity markets. The findings of this empirical study are important in understanding the underlying data generating processes and informationally efficient market analysis.
