The main objective of this study is to develop a comprehensive tool for sustainability assessment of private urban transport, which is applied in a case study in Medellín (Colombia). A system dynamics model is built to assess the urban transport sector by integrating sustainability indicators. The results show that policies based on restrictions or prohibitions do not make significant progress, while financial policies can reduce the need of using private vehicles. Financial policies can also better achieve a sustainable diversification of modes of transport. It is observed that an increase in vehicle fleet can, in the long term, create other problems such as higher car emissions, air quality deterioration, and disease rise in the population. In terms of sustainability, it is concluded that policy flexibility on private vehicle purchases leads to an increase in vehicle fleet.

This study proposes a system that applies artificial intelligence tools to reduce the number of vehicular accidents produced by driver drowsiness and distraction. The proposed system, which is suitable for any kind of vehicle, detects the driver’s face, which is fed into a deep neural network that analyzes it. The network output is then fed into a detection stage which determines whether the driver is drowsy or distracted, activating an alarm. The proposed system has a low computational complexity, allowing real time implementation on mobile devices. The experimental results show that the proposed system can detect drowsiness and distraction with an accuracy of 95.8% in high performance computers. It also shows an 84.5% accuracy on mobile devices with limited capacity, keeping an acceptable operational speed for its implementation in real time. It is concluded that the proposed system detects driver drowsiness and distraction with high accuracy.

The present study assesses the water quality of Ciénaga La Pachita swamp (Cesar, Colombia) by characterizing the aquatic macroinvertebrates associated to the macrophyte Eichhornia crassipes (Pontederiaceae), also known as Buchón de Agua. The assessment also examines physical and chemical variables in different hydrological periods, estimates alpha and beta diversity indices, and determines the BMWP/Col and ASPT water quality indices. As a result, 1550 macroinvertebrates are collected, belonging to five classes, 11 orders, and 21 families. Alpha and beta diversity indices show medium diversity and the class Insecta is dominant. The order Coleoptera is the most diverse while the order Diptera is the most abundant, the Chironomidae family being the most dominant. A significant percentage of the families identified are significantly correlated with both dissolved oxygen and suspended solids. In conclusion, the Ciénaga La Pachita has a medium diversity of macroivertebrates associated to the radicular system of E. crassipes.

This research study implements a demonstration trial to evaluate an integrated management strategy for Rhizoctonia solani Kühn, which causes potato ( Solanum tuberosum L.) black scurf. The treatment applies the biocontrol agent Bacillus subtilis (Ehrenberg) Cohn (commercial strain QST 713) in combination with barley ( Hordeum vulgare L.) green manure. This is compared to a chemical control (conventional treatement). The results show improved crop performance in the integrated management plot, with lower incidence of the disease during both sprouting (10.48%) and tuberization (14.26%) stages, as compared to the conventional management (control), which has incidences of 18.48% and 21.99%, respectively. No differences are found in the incidence of black scurf on tubers. However, disease severity is higher in the control plot than in the treatment plot. In conclusion, the integrated management treatment allows improving the management of potato black scurf when compared to chemical control methods.
