We present our recent attempt to develop interactive multidimensional city modeling through an e-service approach. We experiment with a multitier Web service architecture in developing a prototype interactive city modeling platform. Some advantages of the e-service approach are identified in terms of supporting sustainable urban data development and of delivering user-centered retrieval and interactions. We show that e-service can open up new possibilities of how interactive multidimensional city modeling can be better created, evolved and accessible to wider applications over time.

Web usage mining is the process of extracting interesting patterns from Web logs. We propose an IPA (integrating path traversal patterns and association rules) model for Web usage mining in the EC (electronic commerce) environment. The IPA model takes both the traveling and purchasing behaviors of customers into consideration at the same time to overcome the disadvantages of the pure association rule mining and pure path traversal pattern mining. The IPA model considers not only user traversal forward information but also backward information. Besides, Web structure is also used to prune unnecessary candidates. Especially, the IPA model allows the noise exist in Web transactions. The experimental results show that the IPA model can correctly capture the user's traversing and purchasing behaviors.

We develop a multiattribute economic model to analyze consumer behavior for traditional and electronic channels based on consumers' risk profiles and risk-neutral or risk-averse. We then conduct comparative analyses of consumer purchase decisions to derive strategies for different channels. We study the attitudinal and economic factors that lead to specific purchase decisions under different combinations of price, delivery time, and product customization. We develop theoretical propositions concerning consumer channel switching behavior, incentives to consumers, and pricing strategies for different channels. We also use simulations to gain insights for cases where analytical model becomes intractable.

J. Zhou proposed a new public-key framework, in which the maximum lifetime of a certificate is divided into short periods and the certificate could expire at the end of any period under the control of the certificate owner (or his manager in a corporate environment). However, Zhou's public-key framework is not suitable on implementation in real world. Therefore, we review some security parameters and change them into more suitable ones for implementation. Moreover, we remove an unnecessary trust party of Zhou's public-key framework and propose an improved scheme for realistic solution.

Through e-business, information and communications technology (ICT) has changed the way trade and commerce is carried out. The developed nations of the world are taking advantage of these new technologies to expand their markets. Many countries, developed as well as developing, encourage the SMEs to form clusters to strengthen their marketing and buying power. Clustering is found to be a good strategy for SMEs all over the world to accept as a means to achieving competitive advantage. The Seven E's in e-transformation, a model developed by the University of Western Sydney, that is being successfully used with SMEs in Australia is applied as the approach to e-transform industries in developing countries towards e-business. The model incorporates new business thinking, business models in the new e-economy and it also depicts how clustering can be used to gain competitive advantage. The ceramic industry sector in Sri Lanka is used for the study of e-transforming a cluster of organisations.

The rapid expansion of personal digital multimedia content in recent years requires a systematic indexing, categorizing and browsing interface to manage these enormous data. To tackle this crucial problem, the MPEG-7 standard was initiated with the intention to allow for efficient searching, indexing, filtering and accessing of multimedia content. We propose a MPEG-7 based multimedia content description tool which annotates multimedia data with twelve main attributes regarding its semantic representation. The twelve attributes include answers of who, what, when, where, why and how (5W1H) the digital content was produced as well as the respective direction, distance and duration (3D) information. We define digital multimedia contents including image, video and music embedded with the proposed semantic attributes as dozen dimensional digital content (DDDC). The establishment of DDDC would provide an interoperatable methodology for multimedia content management applications at semantic level. We also envision novel algorithms associate with DDDC attributes for semantic based content retrieval in the future.

A current problem that exists for mobile devices is the discovery, display and use of local or global services as they are found on-the-fly by a roaming mobile device. Currently service registries are centralized and typically use global ontologies. In addition given the multiple mobile device types, creating and maintaining multiple user interfaces for differing device types can be costly for providers. We propose a common and novel solution to these problems that makes use of XML schema to autogenerate client-side display interfaces to both services and to ontologies of services. This approach has the advantages that it does not assume or require a global ontology or registry of services, it provides a general architecture enabling automatic creation of service interfaces for roaming mobile devices and it provides a mechanism for local service discovery.

We present an approach for efficient navigation through an on-line product catalog. The goals of the approach are (i) to support a user in a step-by-step searching for a product and (ii) to ensure the product he has found is the best solution for his need. The product database is based on a light-weighted ontology and structured in the form of a lattice that enables hierarchicals clustering of users' requests. It means that a user can navigate from a very general product-attribute cluster, which satisfies user's buying need and contains a lot of products, to the very specific clusters that seem to contain a few, but for the user highly relevant, products. In each navigation step, the user is provided with the minimal set of navigation alternatives. In order to enhance the processing of the lattice, the partial ordering of the products-attributes clusters is computed using methods from formal concept analysis.

Automated negotiation is a key issue to facilitate e-business. It is an on-going research area and attracts attention from both research communities and industry. We propose a multiple-stage cooperative automated negotiation architecture, including a sophisticated negotiation strategy and protocol, to resolve the agents' conflicts. This proposed architecture attempts to address the discovery of joint efficiency for the negotiating agents in large and complex problem spaces using a coevolutionary method. A game theoretic method is adapted to distribute the payoffs generated from the coevolutionary method. The architecture supports interactions between the two methods to demonstrate that high-quality solutions can be found through their complimentary functions. Using the structure it is possible to refine and explore potential agreements through an iterated process. This article also reports some experimental results and discussions.

A novel ranking method named as QueryFind, based on learning from historical query logs, is proposed to predict users' information needs and reduce the seeking time from the search result list. Our method uses not only the users' feedback but also the recommendation of a source search engine. Based on this ranking method, we utilize users' feedback to evaluate the quality of Web pages implicitly. We also apply the meta-search concept to give each Web page a content-oriented ranking score. Therefore, the time users spend for seeking out their required information from search result list can be reduced and the more relevant Web pages can be presented. We also propose a novel evaluation criterion to verify the feasibility of our ranking method. The criterion is to capture the ranking order of Web pages that users have clicked from the search result list. Finally, our experiments show that the time users spend on seeking out their required information can be reduced significantly.
