The recently introduced new optimum topology dc-todc converter is extended in a simple and elegant manner to provide dc isolation and multiple outputs. In comparison with the sinle-transistor isolated forward and flyback converters operated under the same conditions, the single-transistor isolated new converter is shown to have equal or lower stress levels on the transistor, diode, and capacitor ripple current, and can utilize an isolation transformer with lower core and copper losses. Measurements of cross- and self-regulation properties of a two-output 45 W test converter are presented.

Over the last two years, the CERT-DERA has developed for the ESTEC a general model for the analysis and synthesis of power regulators (1),(2). A numerical programme was written to show the validity of the model. As the results obtained were conclusive, the ESTEC decided to develop software for the Computer Aided Design of these power regulators. The basic development hypotheses were the adaptation of the software to the user's needs, simplicity of use and its availability to potential industrial users. This software is here briefly described and illustrated by means of examples.

User oriented factors concentrating on power semiconductor cost effectiveness will be discussed. A few of the economic factors involved in the choice of power semiconductors that will be discussed are: current to pellet size ratios, power dissipation, base or gate drive, and reliability. Data on transistors and Darlingtons, SCR's, and GTO devices in the 10 to 35 amp range and in T03, T048 and T0220 packages will be presented. The measurements referred to in this report were made on pellets with areas of about .04 in2 to .06 in2.

The dynamics of circuit interaction in terms of inrush current, stress level on components and the viability of protection and monitoring networks during the turn-on and turn-off intervals is investigated. Of special interest is the buildup and release of energy stored within the unit. Several methods for proper sequencing during the above transitions are outlined with particular focus on the behavior of pulse-width modulated units.

The General Electric G64LS latching transistor combines the advantages of the asymmetric thyristor with those of the power darlington transistor. Device operation and its specification sheet are explained. The device may be connected in series and/or parallel. Various base drive circuits are presented, along with its use in representative circuits for AC and DC motor control and high frequency power supplies.

Voltage multiplier techniques were extended at medium power levels to larger multiplication ratios. A series of DC-DC converters were built, with from 20 to 45 stages and with power levels up to 100 watts. Maximum output voltages were about 10,000 volts.
