What Can We Do to Promote Mental Health Among Individuals With Developmental Coordination Disorder?
IF 2 Q3 NEUROSCIENCES Pub Date : 2021-03-01 Epub Date: 2020-08-19 DOI: 10.1007/s40474-020-00209-7

Purpose of the review: It is well-documented that individuals with DCD experience mental health problems, in both psychosocial and psychiatric domains. In this review, we propose a series of diverse options to improve mental health among individuals with DCD.

Recent findings: Despite recognition of mental health problems in DCD, relatively little work has been done to develop effective interventions. There is an urgent need for action in this matter. We present and discuss options based on a societal perspective (awareness and understanding), parental perspective (access to services and resources), and child perspective (participation).

Summary: In order to improve mental health, interventions must take into account multiple levels in a complex framework that includes community, family, and the individual. While more research on intervention effectiveness is necessary, researchers, practitioners, and community advocates can use existing initiatives as a starting point to address the urgent need for improving mental health in DCD.

Current Trends in Telehealth Applications to Deliver Social Communication Interventions for Young Children with or at Risk for Autism Spectrum Disorder.
IF 2 Q3 NEUROSCIENCES Pub Date : 2021-01-01 Epub Date: 2020-10-12 DOI: 10.1007/s40474-020-00214-w

Purpose of review: Early, intensive, and high-quality interventions can often improve social communication outcomes for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Many children experience barriers to intervention, resulting in significant delays to intervention onset or missed opportunities for intervention altogether. With constant advances in technology, the field is experiencing a rapid increase in investigation of telehealth applications to intervention delivery. This article highlights the current trends in social communication intervention via telehealth used in early intervention practices for children with ASD over the past 5 years, including a brief review of studies (from 2014 to January 2020) and our team's experiences in this area.

Recent findings: Based on our experience and the 22 studies we identified in this area, we describe the current trends in telehealth applications used and how interventions were delivered. We also provide recommendations, limitations, and future directions on this topic.

Summary: Telehealth offers innovative intervention delivery options by increasing intervention access, overcoming barriers such as geography and costs of service delivery for young children with ASD.

Parenting a Child with a Neurodevelopmental Disorder.
IF 2 Q3 NEUROSCIENCES Pub Date : 2021-01-01 Epub Date: 2021-11-20 DOI: 10.1007/s40474-021-00240-2

Purpose of review: Traditional thinking and focus in 'childhood disability' have been on the child with the impairment - with the imperative to make the right diagnosis and find the right treatments. The implicit if not direct expectation was that interventions should aim to 'fix' the problems. Professionals have led the processes of investigation and management planning, with parents expected to 'comply' with professionals' recommendations. Much less attention has been paid to parents' perspectives or their wellbeing.

Recent findings: In the past two decades, we have seen a sea change in our conceptualizations of childhood disability. The WHO's framework for health (the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (aka ICF)) and CanChild's 'F-words for Child Development' inform modern thinking and action. We now recognize the family as the unit of interest, with parents' voices an essential element of all aspects of management. The goals of intervention are built around the F-words ideas of function, family, fun, friendships, fitness and future.

Summary: There has been world-wide uptake of the F-words concepts, with increasing evidence of the impact of these ideas on parents and professionals alike. There are important implications of these developments on the structure, processes and content of services for children with neurodevelopmental disorders, their families and the services designed to support them.
