Did Mikhail Sholokhov Write The Quiet Don? 《
Pub Date : 2020-06-15 DOI: 10.7591/cornell/9781501749704.003.0010
This chapter discusses the novel “The Quiet Don” and the controversy over its authorship. It briefly recounts some of the relevant events of World War I, the Russian Revolution of 1917, and the Russian Civil War. The chapter focuses on Soviet writer Mikhail Sholokhov who was awarded by the Nobel Committee in 1945 for the literature prize on his magnum opus, the four-volume The Quiet Don. It also looks into the initial claim that Sholokhov stole the book manuscript for The Quiet Don in a map case that belonged to a White Guard who had been killed in battle. It talks about an anonymous author known as Irina Medvedeva-Tomashevskaia, who wrote several historical studies and claimed that Sholokhov had plagiarized an unpublished manuscript of Fedor Dmitrievich Kriukov.

Did Abelard and Heloise Write the Letters Attributed to Them?
Pub Date : 2020-06-15 DOI: 10.7591/cornell/9781501749704.003.0005
This chapter examines the set of letters that Abelard and Heloise presumably wrote. It recounts how Abelard and Heloise became icons of French and European cultural history as illicit lovers who suffered the consequences. It also analyzes the rediscovery of Abelard's theological and dialectical writings in the eighteenth century, during the time of the Enlightenment and when reason was being given priority of approach in intellectual matters. The chapter investigates two sets of letters. The first set has fifteen letters, in which nine were attributed to Abelard and four were addressed to Heloise. The second set contains 113 anonymous letters that was transcribed in the late fifteenth century by the monk Johannes de Vepria and referred to in the scholarship as “Epistles of Two Lovers.”

How Inauthentic was James Macpherson’s “Translation” of Ossian?
Pub Date : 2020-06-15 DOI: 10.7591/cornell/9781501749704.003.0009
This chapter talks about the Scottish poet James Macpherson. It analyzes Macpherson's publication of the “Fragments of Ancient Poetry Collected in the Highlands of Scotland,” which he claimed was his own translation into English from old Gaelic manuscripts he discovered in the Scottish Highlands. It also looks into “Fingal,” an Ancient Epic Poem or cycle of poetry presumably sung by the legendary Scottish bard Ossian, which Macpherson also claimed was a translation from the Gaelic. The chapter examines the Ossian cycle that stimulated investigations and searches for ethnic folk literature, particularly for national epics throughout Europe and Russia that represented the mystical spirit of the nation. It looks into skeptics, such as Samuel Johnson, David Hume, and Horace Walpole who expressed doubt about the authenticity of Macpherson's translations.

Who Wrote the Analects? 《
Pub Date : 2020-06-15 DOI: 10.7591/cornell/9781501749704.003.0003
This chapter focuses on the Analects, which is a collection of 512 passages arranged in twenty chapters that describe what Confucius said. The chapter talks about the rationalist neo-Confucian philosopher Zhu Xi who selected the Analects as one of the Four Books to read in order to understand Confucian teachings during the Song dynasty. It also mentions the Five Classics of Confucianism that were traditionally ascribed to Confucius in the sense that he wrote some and edited others. The chapter discusses Ban Gu, a Chinese politician and poet who provided the seminal narrative for how it was thought the Analects was compiled. It also pays attention to the poet and politician Liu Zongyuan, who expressed the opinion that disciples of Zengzi compiled the Analects.
