Moore reflects on her tenure as the executive director of INFORMS She states that the phrase "may you live in interesting times" reminds her of the many interesting, challenging, exciting and unexpected times that the members had at INFORMS over most of the last decade Especially now, with COVID-19 Through the determination of members, the hard work of volunteers and the commitment of staff, INFORMS has come a long way since she joined in 2011

Riccio examines whether one test is enough in the COVID-19 pandemic It is now generally recognized that testing is critical to beating the novel coronavirus, for designing policies with long lasting effects, and allowing for the safe opening of our economy Beyond the general public health aspects of testing, most people want to know answers to several key questions No test is perfect There is always the possibility of someone without the virus testing positive, called a false positive, and there is always the possibility of someone with the virus testing negative, called a false negative The two probabilities are not only most often not equal, but they are also not necessarily related One can be high and the other low, or they both may be high or both may be low

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many college and university administrators are facing challenging decisions about when and how to reopen their campuses The Chronicle of Higher Education has been following these decisions closely and as of June 10, 2020, only 8% of colleges and universities had announced they were planning for online courses The remainder are considering strategies and contingency plans that would bring their students back to campus in the fall One fundamental trade-off in these decisions is the balance between the quality of education and the health of students, staff and faculty However, the benefits of having students engaging with their instructor and peers in the classroom are in direct conflict with the latest research on the COVID-19 pandemic, which has shown that transmission of the coronavirus is highest when people are sitting indoors for a long period and talking

Ruiz et al discuss the use of Kaggle in classrooms Kaggle is an online data science platform best known for its public machine learning competitions Since its inception in 2008, Kaggle has hosted thousands of competitions to advance research on a myriad of topics ranging from satellite imagery feature detection to COVID-19 research analysis Besides hosting these global competitions, Kaggle has grown into an expansive data science educational platform that offers full courses, an open-source dataset repository, and a feature known as Kaggle InClass competitions (KICs) These KICs are contests specifically tailored for use in an academic setting that are completely customizable by the hosting professor or teaching assistant In turn, the Kaggle platform provides a leaderboard, centralized location to access the competition data, and support for various popular code libraries

Chan discusses the transition to remote teaching in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic March 2020 marked a historical moment for educators in the US and around the world The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the COVID-19 a pandemic and almost instantaneously, many postsecondary institutions started suspending on-campus, face-to-face classes and transitioning to remote instruction to support social distancing practices Administrators, instructors, students and their families worked together, with education binding us, to work on a common goal--to continue to empower and be empowered with knowledge in the midst of COVID-19 With uncertainty on whether we will be able to move back to campus in the upcoming fall semester, it is time to look at some lessons learned to prepare for the path forward
