Cheriyan examines what an INFORMS chapter can do during the COVID-19 pandemic He states that in 2019, as the then vice president of the INFORMS Chicago Chapter, he led the effort of creating a strategic plan for 2020 Along with the 2019 core team, they identified six focus areas and associated goals In January 2020, when he commenced his role as chapter president, things were looking good The board had approved the strategic plan, and they started putting together events for the year He also shares their chapter's journey during the COVID-19 times, hoping that it will be an inspiration to other chapters around the country

Owen discusses various issues related to the INFORMS organization He states that INFORMS is a rich, strong and vibrant organization that has been his professional society home for more than 25 years No matter the stage or nature of one's career, it is central to the profession INFORMS provides shared platforms and venues for members to connect with each other, disseminate new ideas, learn from each other, and leverage their collective voice to engage policymakers and the broader society If elected as president, he looks forward to serving members, the society and the profession to the fullest of his abilities Even before COVID-19 the profession had been in the midst of rapid change Academia has grown more competitive;federal research funding has dwindled;industries have embraced quantitative decision-making in new and challenging ways
