The B B Newman spelling theorem B B

This article aims to be a self-contained account of the history of the B B Newman Spelling Theorem, including the historical context in which it arose. First, an account of B B Newman and how he came to prove his Spelling Theorem is given, together with a description of the author's efforts to track this information down. Following this, a high-level description of combinatorial group theory is given. This is then tied in with a description of the history of the word problem, a fundamental problem in the area. After a description of some of the theory of one-relator groups, an important part of combinatorial group theory, the natural division line into the torsion and torsion-free case for such groups is described. This culminates in a statement of and general discussion about the B B Newman Spelling Theorem and its importance.

This is the first volume of two arising from the long-running Open University course Topics in the History of Mathematics. It brings together in updated form the teaching materials, activities and primary sources around which that course revolved, and ranges from ancient mathematics to the early seventeenth century. In updating, the authors have had to make many choices. They have done their best to cater for omissions with footnotes and ‘Further Reading’, and with ‘boxes’ summarizing information on particular topics. However, it may be useful to have a copy of the original Reader, edited by Fauvel and Gray, to hand, because many notes refer to passages found there. The first two chapters cover early mathematics. At the outset, the reader is invited to consider questions such as: what is mathematics andwhere and how do we recognize it happening? Much of the mathematics we learned in school seemed to appear in a vacuum, so we ask: what is the problem about, who is solving problems or communicating the results, and who are they talking to and why? Ever present are questions of historiography; how has history been communicated? Can we identify different theories about the past that colour our views? We are warned to be careful about the terms ‘history’ and ‘mathematics’:

Scots-born Henry Parr Hamilton played a significant role in the revival of mathematical teaching in Cambridge. Following the promotion of the differential calculus by Herschel, Babbage and Peacock, he wrote influential texts on analytical geometry and on conic sections. This work is examined, and his biography is outlined. Later, he abandoned mathematics for religious affairs in the Church of England, becoming dean of Salisbury Cathedral.
