—Female characters in patriarchal settings must often navigate through society using their own agency. One form of power with which they are sometimes endowed is supernatural power. The Foreshadowing (2006) is a children’s novel set in England and France during World War I. Unlike most war-themed children’s literature, the main character is a teenage girl named Alexandra. This novel is also notable for its use of supernatural power as a source of agency. Using a theory on gender hegemony proposed by Schippers [1] and another on female agency proposed by Trites [2], this study examines Alexandra, her father, her mother, Tom, and Jack. We show that the novel is ambivalent in its portrayal of supernatural power in relation to female agency. On one hand, the novel demonstrates that supernatural power is a powerful tool that threatens the patriarchal system represented through the father. With the help of her supernatural power, Alexandra uses her agency to overcome the boundaries placed on her by the gender roles of that era. On the other hand, the novel itself is still limited by the era’s gender roles because it allows no possibility for the female character to take an active part in the war.

—This research aims to explore how female students of Pondok Pesantren Kebon Jambu Al Islamy, Cirebon, form their identity through their girlhood experiences. Their experiences are analyzed through construction narratives ranging from social and communal to personal narratives. Using the concepts of narrative identity from McAdams and McLean, this research suggests that girlhood narratives differ for each individual student, despite them being in the same educational institution. The research also found that their narratives of girlhood draw heavily from the many prevailing narratives they have encountered in life. In this process, mainly, the pious critical agency offered by the pesantren and actively promoted by its leader seems to play a crucial role in reconstructing their understanding of what being and becoming an “ideal” Muslim woman means.

—Distinguishing between hoaxes and real news from a linguistic perspective requires further identification than can be provided by structural analysis. The study of emotions and sentiments contained in the text is also important, since these can indicate the author’s mental state, rhetorical position, attitude, judgment, and relationship with an object or event. This study aimed to analyze how emotions and sentiments emerge and play a role in hoaxes, employing qualitative methods and the appraisal theory framework of Martin and White [1]. Data were limited to five hoax texts, with five news texts from official sources used for comparative analysis. All texts were political in nature. Analysis was conducted using qualitative methods, such as annotation, description, interpretation, and comparison between kinds of text. The study found that (1) hoax texts are dominated by negative sentiments with strong semantics, (2) hoax texts tend to be affective and judgmental, and (3) hoax authors try to write texts as similar as possible to real news, often using a heterogloss voice to convey statements. When a monogloss voice is used, an attribute embedding process is dominant. These findings indicate that emotions and sentiments play a significant role in hoax claims and that appraisal theory can address deeper and broader aspects of sentiment analysis in texts.

The extant scholarly discourse on female Disney villains has often asserted the non-feminine identities of these fictional women. The female antagonists of the Disney fairy tales are generally assumed to display qualities that are believed to be too masculine. The term subjectivity is utilized in this paper as the awareness and assertion of one’s agency to achieve self-led goals and lifestyles and is an attribute that is deemed by patriarchal societies to be the indicator of masculinity. However, this subjectivity is observable in each of the female Disney villains. This paper specifically examines the animated Disney movies Cinderella (1950) and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) and compares the narratives pertaining to their antagonists with the myth of Lilith. In so doing, the paper argues that the quality of subjectivity has always been associated with femininity; however, this assertion of the self is still not considered appropriate for women. Just like Lilith, Disney’s female characters display a strong sense of subjectivity but are often vilified for the affirmation of their individuality instead of being passive recipients of the vicissitudes of fate. The narratives surrounding the female antagonists of Cinderella and Snow White seem to reinforce the normative patriarchal idea that subjective females are incapable of handling the responsibilities connected to their subject status. Keywords—Disney, villains, subjectivity, Lilith.

— Japa-mantra is an oral tradition used for healing and is oftentimes associated with mystical superstitions. It is a legacy bequeathed to generations in Javanese culture. Based on the infiltration of religions in Indonesia, the japa-mantra people know is, apparently, a bilingual mixture between Javanese and Arabic. This issue brings up questions regarding how japa-mantra is perceived in today’s society, specifically by dhukun pijet as those who used japa-mantra , and what meanings of japa-mantra are found within society. Hence, the aim of this research is to explain the meaning of japa-mantra in Javanese society. The research was conducted in Banyakan Village, Kediri, where the population still uses traditional medicine to prevent diseases. Written data from Primbon and oral data from japa-mantra used by the dhukun pijet were used in this research. A qualitative method and Suwito’s code-switching theory (1982) were used to obtain the dual-language data meanings. The result of this research showsthat the dhukun pijet in Banyakan Village still understood japa-mantra , which they use as their ancestors’ legacy. They prefer to use the oral japa-mantra of their ancestors over the written one. The meaning of Arabic japa-mantra is a prayer to God to heal diseases that is used by the population of Banyakan Village.

—Well known worldwide, K-Pop idols are expected to maintain their fame by speaking in English to promote themselves to international viewers. The idea that K-Pop idols ought to speak English is even emphasized by the host of a variety show called The Immigration , aired on K-Style TV. The host has stated that speaking English is essential for K-Pop idols before they attend any overseas performances. Nonetheless, some K-Pop idols are still unaccustomed to English, which leads to the phenomena called code-switching and code-mixing. To explore this matter, this study used three episodes of The Immigration to determine the influential factors behind the code-switching and code-mixing phenomena. Moreover, this study used a questionnaire that was filled out through Google Forms to gather opinions from international viewers after watching the show. The result shows that K-Pop idols tend to switch and mix their languages to maintain topics and solidarity among the group members. Furthermore, the survey shows that the perception from participants of both sex groups toward K-Pop idols may vary due to their sense of belonging to the K-Pop fandom.

Technology and the internet affect the teaching of second/foreign language (L2). Podcasts have emerged as prominent tools for L2 extensive listening exercises. Data from several studies suggest that podcasts can be used in L2 learning to help learners improve their listening and speaking skills and promote intercultural comprehension ([1]; [2]). In addition, several attempts have been made to examine the perception and attitudes of L2 learners toward the use of podcasts. The results show that L2 learners perceive podcasts as a useful tool. They are very interested and motivated to learn using podcasts [3]; [4]. Most studies have concentrated on the perceptions and attitudes of L2 learners toward the use of podcasts, and only a few have investigated this topic from L2 teachers’ perspectives. This paper provides an overview of L2 teachers’ perceptions and attitudes toward the use of podcasts in teaching German as a foreign language. Data were collected using a questionnaire. The results revealed that more than half of the participants (77.8% (N=27)) knew about podcasts, while almost two-thirds of the participants (63% (N=27)) reported that they have never used podcasts when teaching the German language. Majority of the participants agreed that podcasts can be used in German language teaching, especially to improve listening skills. Podcasts make foreign language teaching and learning more interesting. However, there are also some drawbacks such as difficulty in finding suitable podcasts that can complement specific levels of teaching materials.

— The University of Indonesia’s Archives Office provides direct archiving services but was not able to fulfill user needs because of the immense volume of its archives. Thus, it was difficult to serve user requirements for archived documents. Recent technological developments have facilitated the creation of the University of Indonesia’s Archives Office’s electronic archive system (SEKAR), which can assist archivists in managing archives more effectively and efficiently so users can retrieve archived material. This study aims is to discover the process of utilizing SEKAR to support archival services. This research project will benefit the Archive Office through the obtained knowledge of the functions of SEKAR that are already advantageous and will apprise officials about the features that still need improvement and that would encourage researchers to utilize SEKAR to obtain ameliorated archival services. This study employed the qualitative approach and data were collected from observations on the SEKAR as well as interviews conducted with some users and Archive and Service System Development Coordinators. The findings of this study reveal that SEKAR is effective in providing archival services to users and that it facilitates users through its search feature, digital files, and archive information request procedures.

—The Edwardian Era (1901–1914) represents a period of extreme socio-economic inequality in Britain. The upper-class invested its financial resources on land and built luxurious estates with large country houses; the lower-class struggled to survive. More than one million people in Edwardian England were compelled by survival needs to work as domestic servants for upper-middle-class and upper-class households. Besides the economic inequity, the period was also characterized by extreme gender inequality. For instance, women could not inherit property and female servants worked at significantly lower wages than male retainers. This study examines the TV series Downton Abbey (2010) to better understand how gender and social inequalities shaped Edwardian society. To this end, the paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the mise-en-scenes , characterization, architecture, and interior design of the English country houses depicted in the series. Thus, selected scenes are used as data and are scrutinized through the strategic concepts of front stage and backstage [1], cinematography and mise-en-scenes [2], and critical visual methodology [3]. The findings of this investigation indicate that Downton Abbey accurately represents the Edwardian social hierarchy by carefully utilizing the three mentioned strategies to portray gender and social inequalities.

The findings of this investigation indicate that Downton Abbey accurately represents the Edwardian social hierarchy by carefully utilizing the three mentioned strategies to portray gender and social inequalities.","PeriodicalId":368820,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International University Symposium on Humanities and Arts (INUSHARTS 2019)","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116668216","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

—This article represents a critical reading of the arrangement of the narrative tense in the storytelling of Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita (1955) [1]. Gérard Genette’s [2] concept of narratology as a structuralist approach to literary criticism forms the theoretical grounding for this analysis. The study aims to explicate the plot and its narrative order, the storytelling techniques used in the novel, the process in which they generate certain narrative effects, and the narrator’s temporal position vis-à-vis the story that is being recounted. The study employs descriptive methods to interpret textual facts and data obtained from the research object. The examination reveals that Lolita’s plot is communicated using the framework of analepsis combined with achrony, an amalgamation that explains the novel’s complex narrative structure. Achrony is also pivotal in suspending the significance of certain events in Lolita and the device thus creates substantial narrative impact. It delivers the essence of the novel, which is specifically engendered by the interactions between the initial narrative and the verified account tendered by the narrator of Lolita .
