When the Great Sejm in 1788 decided to appoint a state foreign service, there was a problem of lack of appropriate officials and right. There were no regulations specific to the work of Polish diplomats posted to foreign royal courts. An example of how imprecise the organizational assumptions of Polish foreign policy resumed in December 1788 is the status of a secretary of the legation, who could act as “charge d’affaires” formal and informal. The article does not exhaust the entire subject matter, but merely mentions some of the problems that the representative with an unregulated diplomatic position had to deal with.

The article presents „the secret of Dauphine of France”, i.e. the actions taken by Marie-Josephe of Saxony (1731–1767), the wife of Dauphin of France Louis Ferdinand, to bring her brother, Prince Francis Xavier de Saxony, to the Polish throne. The „secret” reconstructed in works published between 1901 and 1902 by Casimir Stryienski occupies a marginal but permanent place in the historiography literature. In the light of this analysis, which takes into account the legal and traditional position of Dauphine at the French court, the foreign policy of France in Central and Eastern Europe in the middle of the 18th century, and the knowledge that Maria Józefa possessed on the realities of the Polish policies, it turns out that the „secret” in its current version was an exaggerated, literary construct rather than a diplomatic reality.

The article is devoted to the issue of the participation of the most important town officials – sub-elders and courts writers – in politics at the level of noble self-government as well as the parliament and central institutions of the noble state on the example of the officials of the strongholds of the Sandomierz province in the 17th century. The article presents the results of many years of source search, allowing to present the staffing of the above-mentioned offices in seven strongholds of the former Sandomierz region in the 17th century and to evaluate the involvement of those in these offices in small and large politics. The article presents typical manifestations of the involvement of these officials in public life, as well as spectacular careers and political activity of the most prominent representatives of this clerical group from the Sandomierz province.

The Author is trying to explain the “English” or “British” background of the Enlightenment by showing two main elements of the first shape of Pre-Enlightenment attitudes in the 17th century. Most important were the tracts of the Calvinists and radical nonconformists (Puritans). They stressed importance of the human-free will and experiment in opposition to the God’s intervention in the history of the mankind.
