The urbanization process in Latin America has reached unprecedented levels. The need to mitigate its effects and improve cities sustainability has become a pressing challenge. In this context, the assessment of sustainability acquires an increased recognition as a diagnosis tool to advance towards the ecological, social, economic and political objectives of sustainable development. On the basis of previous studies, this paper is intended to comparatively evaluate the urban and environmental sustainability of Mar del Plata city (Argentina) and its peri-urban area. A Sustainability Index (SI) was built. The most favourable SI values were generally found in the urban area, while the most critical ones were identified in the peri-urban area. The incidence of the topics in the SI, reveals differences between the urban and peri-urban areas. The outcome is expected to strengthen policy integration for present and future generations leading to the Sustainable Development Goals at a local scale.

Disaster risk warnings have been issued by the National Centre for Monitoring and Early Warning of Natural Disasters (Cemaden) to municipalities susceptible to floods and landslides in Brazil since December 2011. A survey of the end-users was developed in order to obtain an evaluation related to quality, anticipation and precision of the warnings. Using an explorative approach, a semi-structured questionnaire was available online to be filled in by the individuals responsible for receiving the warnings. The analysis of the results was supported by statistical techniques, to allow association among the variables. The majority of the users did not report difficulties in understanding the warning texts. However, they reported the inefficiency in receiving warnings by email and suggested that faster tools would be a better solution, i.e. a short message service. The improvements in the alerts could be informed by the results achieved in this survey.

Wood cookstoves are common in the Brazilian semiarid region. Most families use traditional versions, which have a series of social, environmental and health-related impacts. “Improved cookstoves” referto cleaner and more efficient cookstoves. These include adaptations that improve energy efficiency and reduce indoor air pollution, bringing benefits such as the reduction of firewood consumptionfor cooking, reduction of the emission of polluting gases originating from firewood burning andfewer health impacts, also contributing to forest conservation. Although the improved cookstovessector is still relatively underdeveloped in the Brazilian semiarid region, in recent years interest inthese technological alternatives has increased. In this context, the present study contributes to thecompilation and organization of information referring to the use of improved cookstoves in the Braziliansemiarid region.

This research aims to identify the influence of two paradigms, namely colonial thinking and postcolonial thinking, on the valuation of native fruits, The sample was composed of six groups of farmers from the agroecology center Luta Camponesa Nucleus, which is linked to the agroecology network Rede Ecovida de Agroecologia, and the methodological procedures were based on the principles of action research. It concludes that the colonial thinking contributes to the elimination of native fruits, as a result of epistemicide, the advancement of the green revolution, and the food empires. On the other hand, the postcolonial thinking valorizes native fruits, especially through the ecology of knowledges, agroecology, and short circuits.

In this text, we will discuss the interdependence in processes that influence, directly or indirectly, the conditions of natural resources’ appropriation and list social interactions that will draw corresponding institutional frameworks to which dwellers of the Tapajós-Arapiuns Extractive Reserve will affiliate. The research that supports this paper has a multidisciplinary character, relying on the usage of various tools for obtaining information. The analytical notion of institutions (formal and informal rules) has been used to reference the developed interpretations. The considered object of analysis reflects over practices in thedwellers’ way of life, taking into account the alternatives of correlation between social organization and production practices. It is perceived that dwellers’ social frameworks of organization were constructed, not only by traditional institutional apparatus, but also by using coordination instruments and landuse planning, to manage common resources. These principles create an institutional order based on a presumed rationality, with distinct unfoldings and social impacts.

Family farmers of semi-arid regions are especially vulnerable to climate change, due to the reliance on rain-fed production systems and the limited capacity to cope and adapt to impacts. The Brazilian Food Acquisition Program (PAA), as an example of a food procurement program that also functions as a food-based safety net for vulnerable populations, is analysed in a context of extreme drought in the Cariri region (Ceará state, Brazil). Limitations that prevent the full range of potential PAA benefits are examined as perceived by institutional actors involved with the program, while measures to foster the full potential positive impacts on beneficiaries are discussed. Findings indicate that more consideration of the importance of governance and institutional factors on functioning of food acquisition programs, as well as the importance of the role of climate change on this equation, are essential for program sustainability, especially in a scenario of climate change.
