Document in Turkic with Shah ‘Abbas II Conclusion Towards Selling Saltpetre to Russia (Near April, 29 1647) 沙阿阿巴斯二世关于向俄罗斯出售硝石的结论的突厥文文件(1647年4月29日左右)

The Turkic document below fixed the position of the government of the Shah ‘Abbas II to the end of long and hard negotiations with Russian diplomatic representatives towards selling Iranian saltpetre to Russia. Multiple attempts to buy this strategic raw material for the Tsar's defence industry took place since the middle of 1630ies and gained a little success. The written answer given to Russian ambassadors S. I. Kozlovsky and I. Zinoviev gives a short overview of the difficult talks and puts an end to envoy's expectations of obligatory promises to supply Russia some fixed amount of Safawid's saltpetre. At the same time purchases of that kind by Russian official trade representatives were definitely permitted.

The ongoing political and economic transformations have resurfaced the perpetual Russian inquiry into its civilizational identity. Against this backdrop, it's impossible not to take note of several noteworthy exhibition and publication initiatives pertaining to Russia's eastern policy throughout the ages. For nearly 30 years, the biggest Russian museums have carried out quite important exhibition projects in various cities, including St. Petersburg, Moscow, Kazan, Washington D. C., Lisbon, London, Amsterdam and Groningen, among others. These exhibitions trace the significant stages of cultural exchange between Russia and the East. The collections of Russian museums are an important indicator of the importance of the East in the formation of the Russian state and the development of Russian culture. The article opens a new permanent section of the journal called In angello cum libello (“In a corner with a book” = “Alone with a book”). This is an abbreviated form of a motto often attributed to Thomas à Kempis (1380—1471), author of a number of treatises on monastic life. The full saying is a mixture of Latin and Dutch: “In omnibus requiem quaesivi, sed non inveni, nisi in hoexkens ende boexkens” (“I have sought peace everywhere, but I have not found it except in nooks and in books”).

Bibi Hajar, Izmam and Zamzam: Myth and Ritual Among Qashqadarya Arabs 比比·哈贾尔,伊兹曼和赞扎姆:卡什卡达里亚阿拉伯人的神话和仪式

The present article analyses the preserved and recorded narratives of the Qashqadarya Arabs, obtained through the linguistic fieldwork of I. Vinnikov and G. Chikovani from the 1930s to the 2010s. The study sheds light on the ancient beliefs about the origin of the Qashqadarya Arabs. The meaning behind the terminology, together with references to tangible culture, has made it possible to trace a series of ancient myths. These were reborn as a female rite of passage and as an example of female adornment — the septum nose ring (izmam) — which remains the most important symbol of local Arab identity to this day. The traditional legends provide important material for dialectological research, while serving as an autonomous source of historical and cultural information. The study opens up new perspectives for further research into the cultural heritage of the Arabs of Uzbekistan and for maintaining the Russian academic tradition of Arabic studies.

The Rise and Fall of the Early Imamate in Oman (132—280 / 750—892) 阿曼早期伊玛目的兴衰(132-280 / 750-892)

The bipartite division of the Islamic political scene into Sunni and Shi‘a is well known. However, the Ibadi movement is a much less prominent branch of this political scene. A particularly understudied era in the long history of Ibadism is the Imamate, which developed in Oman during the 3rd/9th century. In order to fill the knowledge gap about the early Imamate in Oman, we set out to analyze the political context in which the Imamate emerged, consolidated itself and laid the ground for the Imam to assert absolute authority over his followers. Second, we evaluate the political‑religious context that eventually developed into a protracted period of religious discord and bitter tribal battles. We conclude by appraising the causes that led to an evident time of political and religious stagnation of the movement and to its ultimate fall.

The article presents textual research paths connected to the works of the Bertuccioli collection, stored in the Dipartimento Istituto Italiano di Studi Orientali of Sapienza University of Rome. Based on the bequest of Giuliano Bertuccioli (1923—2001), the collection is particularly rich, given the historical and personal contexts in which it was created. In fact, Bertuccioli was able to gather his texts over the years before 1949; he had the far–sightedness to buy valuable and important works, of which some are analysed in this article. The purpose is to point out research perspectives on the collection from a variety of research fields, also celebrating the profound scholarship of the late Professor Bertuccioli.

The article aims to provide a detailed stylistic and palaeographic study of the two Nestorian gravestones with Syriac inscriptions (kayraks), published first by Masson in 1978 without images, making recourse to recent photos. One of the gravestones results to be one of the kayraks found in Semirechye in about 1886, already known to D. Chwolson, who published its epitaph in 1897. For the second kayrak a new reading is suggested, different from Massons's; besides, the place of origin of the gravestone is recognized as Almaliq. In the appendix all kayraks found in Almaliq are presented, and their artistic and linguistic peculiar features are commented upon.

Anis al‑muridin wa shams al‑majalis is a mystical tafsir on sura “Yusuf” written in Persian which had previously been attributed to ʻAbdallah Ansari (1006—1089). Recent research has proved this attribution to be incorrect, and it has also been discovered there are at least two recensions of the text. The present article deals with the further questions of the history of Anis al‑muridin. It presents some observations and ideas concerning relationship between the two recensions and their authors based on the comparison of the headings in the texts as well as distribution of the known manuscripts. Also included in the article is the detailed description of the copy of Anis al‑muridin preserved at St. Petersburg.

Recent research has proved this attribution to be incorrect, and it has also been discovered there are at least two recensions of the text. The present article deals with the further questions of the history of Anis al‑muridin. It presents some observations and ideas concerning relationship between the two recensions and their authors based on the comparison of the headings in the texts as well as distribution of the known manuscripts. The St. Petersburg Kunstkamera Museum houses a unique collection representing the tangible elements and technical features of the Harar manuscript tradition. The city played a key role in the spread of Islam not only in northeastern Ethiopia, but also in the Horn of Africa as a whole. The collection is the result of an expedition to the Muslim areas of Abyssinia organized by the Museum in 1913. The expedition was led by Nikolai Gumilyov (1886—1921), one of the most famous Russian poets of the 20th century, a tireless traveller and a brave cavalry officer. In 2008 and 2010 new expeditions of the Museum passed along the routes of Gumilyov. This article is the first part of a series devoted to the study of his collection.
