Personal information management systems and interfaces: An overview 个人信息管理系统及其接口:概述

In this paper we present an overview of a Personal Information Management (PIM) System and some examples of the interface applications. PIM involves methods and procedures to store, manage, retrieve and show information. PIM systems are becoming more ubiquitous and present a need for their functions toward improving and enhancing information search results. Therefore, studying the current PIM systems becomes unavoidable in order to develop newer systems. The purpose of this review is to discover and describe the criteria of user interfaces in PIM systems. We first describe the state of the art in PIM systems and present reviews on the elements of PIM user interfaces. Then we discuss the interface components between applications and illustrate the features provided in each.

User web search behavior on query formulation 用户网页搜索行为对查询公式的影响

World Wide Web (WWW) is information rich environment. The access and document posted on WWW has rapidly grown since it was popularized in 1990s. The abundance of information on WWW cause information overload problem, where users find hard to filter and select information return by the search system. Moreover, the growth of new inexperienced users creates new challenges for information retrieval researchers. It has become increasingly difficult for these users to find relevant documents that satisfying their information need. This problem is due to the fact that this category of user is unable to express his exact need of information which leads to the use of inappropriate keywords or queries. This paper presents a study of the user searching behavior on query formulation. In this paper, query formulation is divided into two categories; breadth and depth query strategies. The findings of this study show that breadth query strategy is the most popular strategy.

Information system success and acceptance theories: Towards developing a “virtual communities of practice” success model 信息系统成功与接受理论:构建“虚拟实践共同体”成功模型

Most organizations in the world including the health care sector are unsuccessful in getting the expected benefits of knowledge management initiatives (KM). One of the KM initiatives in health care sector is virtual communities of practice (VCoPs). But the effectiveness of its contribution towards the well publicized failure of numerous KM initiatives is questioned by many researchers. In health care sectors Virtual Community of Practice is one of the KM initiatives practiced where practitioners conduct discussions and share experience online. Presently, there is no overall or widely accepted framework that addresses the important aspects of KM to measure the KMS success in health care sector particularly virtual communities in KMS, reflecting the need to build a successful VCoPs model. Basically, VCoPs depends on the interaction between practitioners through the information and communication technologies (ICT). Past researches have identified the technological and social psychological features as some of the key factors for the success of VCoPs. This article reports on a study that proposes a multidimensional VCoPs success model based on the information systems (IS) success theories which focuses on the social psychological perspective. This study adopts the theory of planned behavior (TPB) combined with other social psychological factors derived from the literature. From the technological perspective, the study adopts the DeLone and McLean IS success model as well as the technology acceptance model (TAM). However, technological and social psychological factors are showing a causal chain starting with beliefs and main system's characteristics to expectations about usage and value of the VCoPs. The model is developed to give initial insights to potential factors affecting VCoPs success and effectiveness in health care sector.

Review of personalized recommendation techniques for learners in e-learning systems 电子学习系统中学习者个性化推荐技术综述

With the rapidly increasing learning materials and learning resources, either offline or online, it is quite difficult to find suitable materials based on learner's need. Recommender systems help learners find the appropriate learning materials in which they would need to learn. This paper discusses about the personalized recommendation systems in e-learning and compares their recommendation techniques. Two concepts are the main discussion topics in this research. The first one is about the learner's requirement and the second one in about the personalized recommendation technique. Finally, this study proposes the knowledge based recommendation system as suitable recommendation technique. This recommendation aims to recommend to the learner, some materials based on the learner's need. By using the semantic relationship between learning materials and the learner's need, system can select the suitable materials as a recommendation to the learner. To develop the proposed knowledge based recommendation system is the next work for the future.

An Arabic language framework for semantic web 语义网的阿拉伯语框架

This research study was basically aimed at addressing the current lack of Arabic support within majority of semantic web tools technologies and applications. It will also address the on-going problem of the lack of resources for Arabic research or semantic web technologies that support the Arabic text. While there may have already been various researches in the past that have been conducted in order to develop ontology-based and optimized semantic framework with the English content, there were very few researches that were developed for the Arabic language. This paper, reports on the survey of the support for the Arabic language in some of the existing semantic web technologies and gives future scenario in applying Semantic Web for Arabic applications. Finally, we propose a new framework intended to add a semantic web layer to the current web based application in order to improve the process of linking, integrating, and searching for different types of applications. The proposed framework will serve Arabic language processing, although it is designed to be adapted to any other languages.

Automated query transformation for searching semantically rich structured collections 用于搜索语义丰富的结构化集合的自动查询转换

The availability of semantically rich structured resources makes the search of such resources on the web even more interesting, where the formation of a meaningful structured query is now possible for better retrieval. Incorporation of concepts like role, category, topic, class, attributes, etc. to indicate the search target and constraints in a structured query enable better definition of information needs. However, the varieties of usages in application contexts create heterogeneity of structures definition and presentation, thus making it hard of using this information when formulating structured query for a search process. Hence, we are motivated to automate transformation of unstructured queries (which are more common for web user), to structured queries (which support better specification of information needs). This paper first explores two important issues arisen in the process of query transformation, i.e. multiple structures (with respect to the needs of handling multiple structured queries type) and multiple semantics (with respect to the needs of handling different collections of structured resources). Along with these issues, we define research problems, followed by an approach of mediating multiple structures and multiple semantics to support the query transformation from unstructured to structured form.

A knowledge-based approach in video frame processing using Iterative Qualitative Data Analysis 基于知识的迭代定性数据分析视频帧处理方法

The ability to acquire, identify and represent the knowledge that a human expert has about a particular domain is a powerful key method in the development of a knowledge-based computer system. This paper demonstrates a methodology for acquiring and analyzing data based on semi-structured interview responses conducted upon human experts. Human experts are asked to determine the acceptability of an image containing person(s) in a sequence of images. Different experts may have different judgments and collectively the image values or attributes from their subjective judgment may contribute to the main factors of consideration in determining the overall image acceptability. The aim of this paper is to identify the most appropriate image attributes used by human experts during an image selection task which is in line with our research objectives. We discuss the knowledge acquisition task by adopting the Iterative Qualitative Data Analysis (IQDA) approach and represent the knowledge into a set of filtering attributes.

An automatic noun compound extraction from Arabic corpus 阿拉伯语语料库名词复合词自动提取

The identification of noun compound as multi-word lexical units is very important task in natural language processing applications that require some degree of semantic interpretation such as, machine translation, information retrieval and text summarization. In this paper, we used the hybrid method for extracting the noun compound from Arabic corpus that is based on linguistic knowledge and statistical measures. For the candidate identification, we have used some linguistic analysis tools such as lemmatization and POS in order to filter the candidates and determine the variations. The association measures have been computed for each candidate to rank the candidates. After that, we have evaluated the association measures by using the n-best evaluation method. We reported the precision values for each association measure in each n-best list. The experimental results showed that the log-likelihood ratio is the best association measure that achieved highest precision.

The evolution of information retrieval technology on the web has led to the idea of semantic search engine in which it understands the meaning and the context of the search query. As a consequence, the search results returned by this type of search engine should match closely with the query. However, the Web is still dominated by Web 2.0 in which information and data is presented in an unstructured manner and is only fit for human consumption. Hence, building a semantic search engine is a very challenging task and there is still a lot of improvement that needs to be done to achieve the desirable results. As an example, if we search for “food that is not halal”, existing semantic search engines still ignore the term of “not” resulting in inaccurate search. In view of this problem, this paper proposes a semantic meta search engine that utilizes the power of a traditional search engine (Google) and enriches the search result using DBpedia as the knowledge base to produce better results. This paper also describes the application of the knowledge base contained in DBpedia to deliver an improved search engine.

Evaluating semantically enriched information systems 评估语义丰富的信息系统

Information systems should be designed to allow users to express their information requests in a simple way and to retrieve information that they consider as relevant to these requests. In order to fulfil these requirements, information system designers face many challenges w.r.t. selecting appropriate technologies and deciding on a modelling approach for their system. In this paper we present a conceptual framework that can be used to analyse the “fitness” of (semantically enriched) information systems w.r.t. queriability and information retrieval quality. It can help designers to spot the strengths and weaknesses of various modelling approaches as well as managing tradeoffs between modelling effort and their potential benefits. We evaluate this methodology in a case study on different modelling approaches for annotating medical images.
