Arab Journal of Plant Protection, 39(1): 22-28. This study was conducted to determine the effect of ethanol and hexane extracts of withania somnifera on the larvae of the cotton leaf worm Spodoptera littoralis when the 2nd and 4th larvae instars were fed on food treated with plant extract concentrations of 1.25, 2.5 and 5%. The results showed that the 2 nd instar larvae were the most susceptible than the late ones. The highest mortality rate reached 58.52% for the 2 nd instar larvae and 20.74% for the 4 th ones when 5% ethanol extract concentration was used. The results pointed to prolonged durations of the larval and pupal stages depending on the extract concentration used. The longest period of growth stage was found for the treatment with 5% hexane extract concentration. The fertility rate of adults emerged from treated larvae was decreased. The numbers of eggs laid was 670 eggs/female and the egg hatching rate reached 71% when 5% extract concentration was used to treat 2 nd larvae instars. Keywords: Extracts, Withania somnifera, cotton leaf worm, mortality rate, biological effects.

Arab Journal of Plant Protection, 39(1): 69-78. A survey was conducted to investigate adoption of integrated pest management (IPM) approaches by olive farmers, through determining their knowledge about the most important olive pests in the Syrian Coastal Area, and the relationship between growers’ personal traits and their adoption of IPM approaches. This evaluation was carried out in 42 villages in Tartus and Lattakia governorates along the Syrian coast in 2017 and 2018 growing seasons. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews with a random sample of 420 olive growers by using a questionnaire designed for the purpose of this study. Collected data on frequencies, percentages, averages, standard deviations, relative importance index, in addition to correlation coefficients, were used for data analysis. Results showed that: the Spilocaea oleagina (Cast.), Bactrocera oleae (Rossi), Prays oleae (Bernard) and Euphyllura olivina (Costa) were the most prevalent pests in the researched area, whereas Margaronia unionalis (Hubner), Leveillula taurica (Lév.), and Phloeotribus scarabaeoides (Bernard) were less common. Almost 57.78 and 32.8% of farmers had medium level of IPM adoption in Tartus and Lattakia governorates, respectively. Positive significant correlation was found between adoption levels and each of degree of participation in extension activities and knowledge levels, whereas negative significant correlation was found between adoption levels and each of land property fragmentation and constraints of IPM implementation. Based on this findings it can be concluded that extension activities need to be intensified and more emphasis should be placed on training programs to improve growers’ knowledge and adoption of the concepts and applications of IPM practices. Keywords: Integrated pest management, olive growers, Syrian coast, knowledge diffusion level, adoption.

Arab Journal of Plant Protection, 39(1): 29-38. Seed-borne fungi adversely affect seed germination and seedling vigor and results in economic loss to farmers. In the present study, the antifungal activity of aqueous and alcohol extracts from eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) roots against fungi isolated from local wheat grains stored in the old Hilla silo and the new Hilla silo in Babylon, Iraq were investigated during the growing season 2017-2018 by using the poisoned food technique. The ability of the isolated fungal species for aflatoxins production was assayed. The results obtained showed that the aqueous extract contained flavonoids, whereas the alcohol extract contained flavonoids and alkaloids. Three fungal species associated with stored wheat grains were isolated, namely: Aspergillus niger, Penicillium notatum and Fusarium oxysporum. It was found that the extracts had a significant inhibitory effect on the growth of these fungi grown on potato dextrose agar medium compared with the control at P=0.05. At a concentration 36 مجلة وقاية النبات العربية، مجلد 39 ،عدد 1( 2021 ) of 10 mg/ml, the alcohol extract had a significantly higher inhibition rate which reached 91.11, 88.88 and 91.11%, on the three fungi, respectively, as compared to 86.66, 86.66 and 83.33% for the aqueous extract, respectively. The results also showed that Aspergillus niger and Penicillium notatum were able to produce aflatoxins. Keywords: Aflatoxins, alcohol extract, aqueous extract, flavonoids.
