Students are increasingly filling crucial roles in the smaller undergraduate college library, a convenient on-campus set- ting for work-study assignments. The one-on-one training pattern redominates and is effective at Randolph-Macon Woman's Col- rege, an institution where education in the singular is stressed. The various departments detail modes of interaction between supervisor1 student staff member. Shortcomings as well as strengths are ac- knowledged.

In-service training plays a pivotal role in the prepara- tion of ublic services staff in libraries. This paper will define train- ing anffocus on the planning process necessary for the effective development and implementation of on-the-job training programs, including the goals of a training program, the general and specific behavioral objectives of a program, and the knowled e, skills, and f abilities required by all public services positions for ef ective service within varied library environments. Part I1 of the aper will discuss the selection of appropriate training techniques an 1 formats and con- centrate on the use of video as a training tool and the practical train- ing applications that have been developed within the library world and in other sectors. Video is a promising tool which should be utilized for training purposes.

The advent of new technology has changed the teach- ing role of librarians. The increased role of enduser searching in academic libraries has meant that library instruction is now more important that ever. The experiences of Texas A&M University are examined as an example of a variety of teaching methods employed by one university library to meet the increased demands of its pa- trons for better enduser searches. Librarians, concerned over inade- quate search strategies employed by patrons, design individualized instructions for a variety of databases, provide some individual, one-to-one instruction and teach in you situations employing P equipment that allows onscreen projectton rom a monitor. Remote users have been trained to use the online catalog by development of a specialized training manual.

The task of finding and developing potential leaders from within the library profession requires an understanding of what a leader is, as well as the challen es that librarianship will face as it enters the twenty-first century. ~ f i s article explores five fundamen- tal leadership competencies: vision, communication, trust, risk-tak- ing and em owerment and examines how individuals learn from personal an ! organizational experiences. It sug ests ways of incor- porating programs and activities into the workp k ace that support the development of leadership skills. If everyone within the library community assumes responsibility for recognizing untapped talent and providing developmental opportunities for it to mature, it will ensure that the library field has a pool of competent, confident, com- mitted leaders for the future.
