This study examines the link between an English instructional time decrease on English learning achievements by reviewing the students’ trends of English learning achievement scores from 2011 to 2017 and conducting a survey concerning the decline in their instructional time. A mixed-method approach was used to meet the objective of the research. For quantitative data, the Likert-scale questionnaire was collected from 474 senior high school English teachers all over Indonesia, and the achievement data consisted of 211,086 summative scores of senior high school students from semesters 1 to 5. For qualitative data, the respondents filled in open-ended questions unveiling their viewpoints on instructional time decrease. The result between the correlation analysis and the teacher’s open-ended question seems inconsistent. Even though the statistical analysis does not indicate any direct relationship between instructional time decrease and students’ achievement where both summative and proficiency scores keep increasing during the period observed, from the teachers’ perspective, questionnaire data reported a significant tendency for the reduction in instructional time on learning achievement. Further analysis shows that in terms of students’ learning achievement and proficiency, instructional time decrease cannot be stated as a factor that directly influences students’ learning. However, from the teachers’ perspective, the reduction is believed to influence their students’ achievement and classroom management.

The importance of language proficiency, particularly speaking skill competence, has been acknowledged in the field of education for many years. However, despite numerous efforts to improve it, the achievement of student speaking skill competence is still far from the expected target. One of the main reasons behind this problem is the availability, accessibility, and validity of the teaching materials used. This study aimed to address the issue of unsatisfactory Indonesian students’ speaking abilities, which are partly attributed to the lack of available teaching media, particularly those that integrate cultural values. Therefore, this research used research and development study of a speaking skill e-module that is integrated with cultural values that was developed in an Android-based device. The module was designed for university students in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The results of the study indicated that the use of the speaking e-module helped improve students' speaking abilities, as well as their understanding of cultural values. Therefore, this research is also expected to reach the potential to be beneficial to a wider audience in Indonesia, beyond the scope of South Sulawesi universities.

The phenomenon of code-switching manifests as the practice of seamlessly oscillating between two or more distinct languages or language variations within the confines of a singular exchange, be it a sentence or a conversation. Children reared in environments rich with linguistic diversity frequently acquire the ability to proficiently maneuver between languages as a mechanism to convey meaning to varied interlocutors or within disparate situational contexts. This study presents a qualitative case study of two children from mixed marriage parents, one of whom is an Indonesian native speaker and the other is an English native speaker. The aim of the study is to explore the use of code-switching and its impact on the language development and proficiency of children from mixed-marriage families. Interviews were conducted with the parents, while observations were made of the children's language use at home. The results suggest that code-switching facilitates the development of children's language skills in different contexts; however, it also hinders their ability to separate and utilize different languages effectively. Furthermore, code-switching enables children to maintain a connection to their cultural heritage and fosters a sense of comfort in multicultural environments.

Teaching English as a foreign language (EFL) in Indonesia has its own complexity due to the multilingual situation and the broadly different levels of English proficiency. To cope with this particular challenge, some Indonesian teachers tend to use a translanguaging method in teaching their students so that their classes are more interactive and engaging. In this case, translanguaging is a form of multilingual practice in the context of multilingual education where students are given equal rights to develop their language potential. Realizing the complexity of the learning process in a multilingual context, we aimed to reveal the types and purposes of Translanguaging in the learning process. This study used a qualitative method and data were collected through observations, interviews, and document analyses. This study shows that there were three types of translanguaging used by teachers during their teaching. The types of translanguaging are intra-sentential translanguaging, intersentential translanguaging, and tag translanguaging, with four purposes inform of strategies that are related to each other. It was also found that translanguaging is useful in the EFL learning processes because it can be used as a method to explain learning materials in a more convenient way to enhance students’ understanding.

Accurately translating the messages embedded in Quranic verses into the target language is of paramount importance. Although numerous studies have examined translation qualities in Quranic translations, there is limited research exploring the effectiveness of an imitation technique in enhancing students' translation skills for Quranic verses into Indonesian. This qualitative descriptive study aims to investigate the efficacy of imitating sentence patterns through the utilization of drill techniques in teaching Arabic-to-Indonesian translation. The study involved a total of 18 students who underwent a pre-treatment translation test and a post-treatment test. The primary focus of the translation assessment centered on accuracy. The findings unveiled that the implementation of this method significantly improved students' translation skills, particularly in terms of accuracy. Not only did it enable students to effectively imitate patterns, but it also fostered creativity by encouraging variations within these patterns while upholding accuracy in conveying the intended meanings from Arabic to Indonesian. The students exhibited enhanced translation quality following the treatment, thus highlighting the positive impact of employing the imitating sentence patterns method. This approach is especially well-suited for beginners as it facilitates the comprehension of fundamental sentence patterns, expands vocabulary, and enhances translation proficiency. When employing this method, it is crucial to consider factors such as using analogous sentence patterns in both languages, avoiding cultural terminology in examples, ensuring literal translations of sentence patterns, and permitting flexibility for variations.

Various studies have been conducted on the rhetorical mechanism of Research Articles (RAs). However, the use of modal verbs in the Discussion section of a Research Article (RA) has not been adequately addressed. Thus, this study analysed modal verbs within the four generic moves in the Discussion sections of RAs using the model of Kanoksilapatham (2007). A corpus of 60 RAs written in English was selected from four Applied Linguistics journals: Language Testing, TESOL Quarterly, Pragmatics, and Second Language Research. The analysis of the corpus included two phases: (1) the identification of moves in the Discussion sections and (2) identification of modal verbs and their use within the identified generic moves in the Discussion sections. Chi-square was used to determine the distribution of modal verbs within the moves in the Discussion sections in each journal. The study revealed the significant distribution of modal verbs within three moves: 2, 3, and 4. The study also showed that the way modal verbs are distributed reflects the importance of their use as they have pragmatic functions in the Discussion section of a RA. It is hoped that this genre-based analysis of modal verbs in the Discussion section can make novice writers aware of how expert writers use modal verbs effectively in the moves of the Discussion section.

This study determines the relationship between reading mindsets and reading comprehension performance with the use of reading engagement as a mediating variable. It drew on Dweck’s (1999) mindset theory and employed a correlational research design to collect data from 567 EFL undergraduate students majoring in English in three public universities in Saudi Arabia. The data collection was conducted by distributing two questionnaires and administering a reading comprehension test. The collected data were analyzed using a two-phase structural equation modeling approach (i.e., measurement and structural models). The results indicated that there was a significant correlation between a growth reading mindset and reading engagement. Nevertheless, a significant yet negative correlation was revealed between a fixed reading mindset and reading engagement. Moreover, there was a significant and positive correlation between reading engagement and reading comprehension performance. Lastly, the findings showed that reading engagement served as a mediating variable in determining the correlation between reading mindsets and reading comprehension performance. The relevance of the current study stems from the dearth of research on reading mindsets. Also, previous studies have not focused on exploring the correlation between mindsets and performance in the EFL context. Therefore, the current study is expected to benefit EFL readers, instructors, and policymakers.

Criticism tends to be a face-threatening speech act that can endanger social relationships if not managed using appropriate strategies, especially in the intercultural context. This study aims to compare and contrast the politeness of criticism speech acts used in Japanese and Minangkabau languages as depicted in film series. The data on criticism speech acts in this study were collected from eleven Japanese film series with a total duration of 538 minutes and eight Minangkabau films with a total duration of 535 minutes. The collected data were formed into a set of data cards, classified based on the criticism speech acts strategies by Nguyen (2005), and analyzed based on Brown and Levinson’s (1987) politeness theory. The data classification in Japanese and Minangkabau was validated through the expert judgment process. The findings indicated that the Japanese and Minangkabau languages employed the same set of criticism speech act strategies but have different tendencies. In Japanese, speakers tend to use indirect strategies as their main criticism speech act strategy by ‘asking/presupposing,’ ‘correction,’ and ‘advice for change.’ Meanwhile, in Minangkabau, speakers tend to use direct strategies by using ‘negative evaluation,’ ‘expression of contradiction,’ and ‘disagreement’ strategies. Regarding the politeness strategy, off-record politeness strategies are more dominantly used among Japanese speakers. In contrast, Minangkabau speakers use bald on-record politeness strategies in criticism speech acts, reflecting their communication culture. The findings of this study provide a deeper understanding of criticism speech act and politeness strategies. The study is expected to contribute to the area of research on intercultural communication and Sociolinguistics.

The findings indicated that the Japanese and Minangkabau languages employed the same set of criticism speech act strategies but have different tendencies. In Japanese, speakers tend to use indirect strategies as their main criticism speech act strategy by ‘asking/presupposing,’ ‘correction,’ and ‘advice for change.’ Meanwhile, in Minangkabau, speakers tend to use direct strategies by using ‘negative evaluation,’ ‘expression of contradiction,’ and ‘disagreement’ strategies. Regarding the politeness strategy, off-record politeness strategies are more dominantly used among Japanese speakers. In contrast, Minangkabau speakers use bald on-record politeness strategies in criticism speech acts, reflecting their communication culture. The findings of this study provide a deeper understanding of criticism speech act and politeness strategies. The media plays a crucial role in shaping gender representation and influencing societal perceptions of gender roles. While several studies have examined the diachronic view of language use in relation to gender representation, there is a dearth of research specifically focusing on the Sundanese language in this line of inquiry. Filling this research gap, the present study aims to analyze the usage patterns of three Sundanese nouns—mojang, pamajikan, and wanoja—that pertain to women, with the goal of exploring the representation of women in the corpus of the Sundanese magazine Manglé. Through a comprehensive corpus-based analysis, this study investigates the frequency and contextual meaning of these nouns using collocation analysis. The analysis encompasses four distinct eras spanning from 1958 to 2019: Guided Democracy, New Order, Transition to Democracy, and Reform. The findings reveal significant shifts in the frequency of these nouns over time. Notably, the usage of the term wanoja has experienced a remarkable increase throughout the examined period, while the occurrences of pamajikan and mojang have undergone a rapid decline. The collocation analysis suggests that women in the Sundanese corpus were initially depicted as dependent individuals, predominantly associated with their traditional roles. However, as the eras progressed, the representation of women evolved, portraying them as increasingly independent and actively engaged in the public sphere. The examination of women's representation in the Manglé corpus offers valuable insights into how women are constructed through lexical choices. The relations between language and politics in Covid-19 coverage have become significant issues following the rise of Chinese Covid-19 cases in 2022. The study aims to investigate specific rhetorical appeals and language means that were used by journalists to manipulate public opinion and propagate certain ideology in the American and Russian online news discourse. The study employed a mixture of quantitative and qualitative research techniques. It used computer-assisted content analysis, rhetorical analysis, and van Dijk’s sociocognitive approach to CDA to identify and describe biased representations of Russia’s Covid-19 vaccine ‘Sputnik V’ in 307 Internet news text. The content analysis revealed frequent mentions of politicians and political institutions in the American and Russian coverage of ‘Sputnik V’. The rhetorical and discourse analyses expose similarities in the use of rhetorical appeals and language means. The study concludes that the coverage of ‘Sputnik V’ was highly emotionalized and politicized both in American and Russian media. The journalists utilized the ideologically loaded language and rhetorical appeals to disguise their biased opinions and create a distorted image of ‘Sputnik V’ in the online news coverage. The study also provides implications for the development of ESL and EFL courses to enhance students’ reading comprehension skills.
