Midwifery is a regulated profession, the conditions for the education and performance of which are clearly defined in national law based on legislation of European Union (EU) and on basic documents of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) (WHO, 2016; EU, 2013; Ministry of Health CR, 2022 Law No. 96/2004; ICM, 2017). In the case of midwifery, it is clearly established to what extent and under what conditions graduates are qualified to practice the profession. It is particularly important to educate students and qualified midwives in the use of Evidence Based Practice, to focus on practical teaching, and to encourage them to develop hard and soft skills and to continue lifelong learning.

Aim: Increased cultural diversity due to global migration and on-going associated healthcare disparities has highlighted the importance of culturally competent care. We sought to summarize existing knowledge and identify gaps in research linked to the cultural challenges encountered by nurses when caring for patients from different cultures. Design: A scoping review. Methods: Informed by PRISMA-ScR guidelines, we searched PubMed, ScienceDirect, EBSCO Host, Web of Science, and Google Scholar using relevant MeSH keywords for articles published from 2010–2020. We then used a 3-step data screening and extraction process to manage retrieved articles. Results: Initially 80 studies were identified, six of which met inclusion criteria. Thematic analysis yielded five themes: lack of cultural knowledge, language barriers, micro-racism, lack of time to attend training and provide culturally competent care, and recommendations to improve care delivery. Conclusion: Nurses should be proactive and advocate for the necessary education and training to provide culturally competent care so critical to providing high-quality healthcare. More research, interventional and effectiveness in particular, is needed to address common challenges such as micro-racism and to facilitate the World Health Organization and National Academy of Medicine recommendations directed at providing culturally appropriate care to promote health equity.

Aim: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between toxic leadership and nurse followership effectiveness. Design: A quantitative cross-sectional study. Methods: This study was carried out in all medical and surgical inpatient care units at Alexandria Main University Hospital. In total, 343 nurses completed the toxic leadership scale and followership styles questionnaires. Frequencies and percentages were used to present demographic characteristics; means and standard deviations were used to present continuous variables. An independent sample t-test, Pearson correlation, and linear regression analysis were conducted to test the nature of the relationship between study variables. Results: The results indicated a slightly moderate mean percentage score for toxic leadership and a slightly high mean percentage score for nurse followership effectiveness. In addition, there was a significant negative weak correlation between toxic leadership and nurse followership effectiveness. Conclusion: Training programs should be designed for leaders and followers to develop self-insight / awareness, maintain self-control and accountability, and advance followership skills. Controlling systems should be developed for the immediate identification of ongoing toxic leadership behavior in the organization, and a whistleblower protection system should be established.

Aim: The aim of the study was to evaluate nursesʼ knowledge of protective precautions and their experiences of various factors during the Covid-19 pandemic. Design: A descriptive cross-sectional study. Methods: In this descriptive cross-sectional study, the snowball method was selected for sampling to access nurses (n = 392) serving in the fight against the Covid-19 infection nationwide. The online data collection form had two parts: a sociodemographic form and a second part including 25 items on institutional protective measures, personal protective measures, and nursing care. Results: Most of the nurses caring for patients with Covid-19 were well-informed about institutional, personal, and patient protective precautions. The scores of female nurses, married nurses and those with children were higher. Multiple regression analysis revealed that in-service training, working in a clinic, and having colleagues diagnosed with Covid-19 positively affected knowledge, while having 0–5 years of professional experience negatively affected knowledge. Conclusion: This study may enlighten medical authorities and policymakers in their efforts to promote the quality of care delivered to patients with Covid-19 and the quality of working conditions of healthcare providers.

Aim: To describe graduating nursing students’ competence based on their knowledge in the nursing of a patient with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and their self-assessed nurse competence. Design: A cross-sectional survey. Methods: The data were collected from 2018–2019 using an ACS test developed for this study and using the Nurse Competence Scale. The sample contained 47 graduating nursing students. The statistical analysis methods were used. Results: Only 48.9% (n = 23) of the students scored an accepted level of knowledge in the nursing of a patient with ACS, and a little over half (51.1%; n = 24) failed the ACS test. Graduating nursing students’ self-assessed nurse competence was at a good level (69.7; VAS 0–100). No statistically significant differences in nurse competence assessments occurred between students who passed the ACS test and those who failed it. Conclusion: While graduating nursing students have a good level of nursing competence, their knowledge in the nursing of a patient with ACS was poor. It is important to emphasize the nursing of a patient with ACS in nursing education and to pay especially close attention to interpreting the patient’s electrocardiogram findings.

Aim: This study aimed to describe adverse events occurring during intra-hospital transportation of adult patients from the emergency room to the intensive care unit and to analyze the associated risk factors. Design: This study uses a quantitative analytical observational design. Methods: In total, 151 critically ill patients out of 159 with indicated intra-hospital transportation participated in the study. Patients were transported from the emergency room to the intensive care unit in a class A general hospital in Central Java, Indonesia. The statistical analysis included descriptions of demographic, medication, monitoring, equipment, and clinical characteristics of the cohort, and identified risk factors for adverse events during transportation by univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses. Results: The overall incidence of adverse events was 78.8%. Risk factors were: transport team, hemodynamic monitoring, equipment preparation, and patient’s condition, and were associated with adverse events (p < 0.05). Multivariate analysis showed that equipment preparation was the factor most contributing to adverse events with Exp(B) = 22.6. Conclusion: This study showed that the incidence of adverse events during transportation of critically ill patients was high. We recommend that transports be performed by fully equipped teams of medical professionals. Monitoring of intra-hospital transportation-related events is also recommended to reduce frequency of adverse

Aim: Post-traumatic stress disorder refers to a person’s experience of a traumatic event . Traumatic experiences during childbirth can cause postpartum stress in some women. The present study aimed to investigate the correlation between postpartum stress disorder in different types of delivery (normal vaginal delivery and cesarean section) and maternal anxiety. Design: This was a cross-sectional study. Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed on 714 pregnant mothers selected via cluster sampling six-eight weeks after their delivery in selected health centers. The data were collected using Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Symptom Scale I and the Spielberger State - Trait Anxiety Inventory . The data were then entered into the SPSS 20 software and were analyzed using a chi-square test. The significance level was set as p < 0.05. Results: The results showed that most of the participants in the two groups had medium to low anxiety levels, and the two groups were homogeneous in this regard. However, the mean scores of obvious anxiety (p < 0.0001) and hidden anxiety (p < 0.0001) were significantly higher in the normal vaginal delivery group compared to the cesarean section group. Moreover, post-traumatic stress score was significantly correlated to both obvious anxiety and hidden anxiety in the two study groups. Conclusion: Postpartum stress disorder had a positive relationship with obvious anxiety and hidden anxiety in both study groups. Counseling may be effective in reducing post-traumatic stress disorder in women.
