Abstract A specimen of common thresher shark Alopias vulpinus (Bonnaterre 1788) was caught in a fishing net in the waters off Piran (Gulf of Trieste, northern Adriatic Sea). It was a juvenile male with a total length of 2841 mm. In recent decades, other cases of juvenile specimens of common thresher shark have been recorded in Slovenian coastal waters. Despite the drastic decline in the population of this species, thresher shark continues to be caught in local Adriatic fisheries.

Abstract As an endemic species, Dalmatian barbelgudgeon was introduced into Šatorsko Lake, but it was insufficiently explored at this locality. The aim of this study was to determine seasonal variations of physicochemical parameters of the water in relation to morphometric and hematological parameters of Dalmatian barbelgudgeon from Šatorsko Lake. Physicochemical analysis of the water recorded lower values of temperature, O 2 concentration, O 2 saturation, electrolytic conductivity and suspended matter in autumn, while other analyzed parameters indicated lower values in spring. The analysis of morphometric parameters (weight, standard length, total length and Fulton’s condition factor) determined higher values of all the parameters during spring, while a significant difference was noted only for Fulton’s condition factor. A statistically significant difference was observed for all erythrocyte lineage parameters (RBC-red blood cells, HB-hemoglobin concentration, HCT-hematocrit, MCV-mean corpuscular volume, MCH-mean corpuscular hemoglobin, MCHC-mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentrations). In white blood cells, a statistically significant difference was recorded for lymphocytes, non-segmented neutrophils and monocytes, while the proportion of segmented neutrophils and basophils was slightly increased in spring. Furthermore, the recorded values of pseudo-eosinophils were equal in spring and autumn. The results of these studies indicate a significant influence of exogenous and endogenous factors on the variability of morphometric and hematological parameters of Dalmatian barbelgudgeon from Šatorsko Lake.

Abstract This study is the first contribution to monitoring the rearing of common meagre Argyrosomus regius in floating cages anchored in Dakhla Bay, southern Morocco. The aquaculture potential of common meagre in Dakhla Bay was evaluated by zootechnical monitoring of two production cycles. The first batch consisted of 20,000 fingerlings of 4.5 ± 0.13 g in mean initial weight and 6±0.19 cm in fork length, and was caught on 26 August 2019 under a condition factor of about 2.08 ± 0.35. The second batch consisted of 30,000 individuals of 3 ± 0.11 g in average initial weight and 6±0.26 cm in average initial length, and was caught on 4 June 2020 under a condition factor of about 1.39 ± 0.21. During the first experiment, which lasted 16 months, a high growth potential of common meagre was observed. The fish reached an average weight of 1265 ± 69.2 g and an average length of 48±4.32 cm with a specific growth rate (SGR) of 0.58 ± 0.11% day-1 and a daily growth index DGI of 2.45 ± 0.91 g ind-1 day-1. The feed conversion ratio was 1.18 (FER = 0.84), final density was 36.94 kg m-3 and condition factor (k) recorded a mean value of 2.18±0.39 throughout the cycle. The survival rate at the first harvest was 89.86%. After 18 months of rearing, the fish of the second cycle reached a weight of 1285±69.2 g and a size of 47 ± 5.36 cm, with an SGR of 0.49 ± 0.12 % day-1 and a DGI of 2.34 ± 1.35 g ind-1 day-1, an FCR of 1.21 (FER =0.83), the final density of 28.43 kg m-3 and a condition factor of 1.35 ± 0.32. The survival rate was 92.19%. However, the results of the statistical analysis showed that there was no significant difference between the two production cycles (P > 0.05). These results confirm that common meagre is a very promising species for the diversification of aquaculture in Dakhla Bay and throughout Morocco.

Abstract Round goby Neogobius melanostomus is one of the three invasive Ponto-Caspian gobies found in the Sava River basin in Croatia. It has a negative effect on the native ecosystems and is more abundant in highly polluted areas. The objective of this study was to determine the fluctuating asymmetry of four morphometric characters, as well as otolith width and length. Thirty individuals of N. melanostomus were collected and analysed at two sampling sites in the main course of the Sava (Babina Greda, Slavonski Brod) and in a modified habitat (Sava-Odra canal). The squared coefficient of asymmetry variation was used to analyse potential differences between populations. We identified variations in the asymmetry values of the analysed characters, as well as otolith width and length between sampling sites. The highest fluctuating asymmetry was observed in individuals at the Babina Greda sampling site, which could be due to high environmental stress. The results of the study show that the study of fluctuating asymmetry can be used on invasive fish species as a simple approach to identifying habitat quality.

Abstract Goonch Bagarius bagarius (Hamilton, 1822) is one of the largest and fastest-growing catfish of the Indus River found at Taunsa Barrage, Pakistan. The full-length cDNA of the growth hormone gene (600 bp) was amplified by reverse transcription of mRNA isolated from the pituitary gland of B. bagarius . The full-length growth hormone gene encodes a putative polypeptide of 200 amino acids with a molecular mass of 22.58 kDa. The precursor of B. bagarius growth hormone (GH) is composed of 22 amino acids as a signal peptide and 178 amino acids of a mature peptide. There were six conserved Cys residues in GH protein (20, 71, 135, 173, 190 and 198) that maintain the structural integrity of this protein. One putative N-glycosylation site was present at the 197 th amino acid. The total number of positively charged (Arg and Lys) and negatively charged (Asp and Glu) residues is 42 and 31, respectively. The B. bagarius GH gene shows more than 90% sequence homology with other catfishes. The mature protein GH gene was expressed in Escherichia coli using pET-28 expression vector, and the recombinant protein of 19.5 kDa was detected through SDS-PAGE analysis. This study suggests that cloning and expression of B. bagarius GH gene would provide basic information for transgenic studies aimed at a faster growth rate. This recombinant GH may be produced on a large scale to exploit its growth-promoting function in other cultured fishes.

Abstract The near-threatened Ailia coila, commonly referred to as Gangetic ailia, is a catfish species in the Ailiidae family that is indigenous to Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal, and India. This study describes the comprehensive explanation of life-history traits of Ailia coila, including length-frequency distribution (LFD), growth pattern (length-weight relationships, LWRs and length-length relationship, LLR), form factor (a3.0), condition factors (allometric, KA; Fulton’s, KF; relative, KR and relative weight, WR), size at first sexual maturity (Lm), optimum catchable length (Lopt) and natural mortality (Mw) from the Tetulia River in southern Bangladesh. Additionally, Lα, a3.0, Lm, Mw and Lopt from various water bodies worldwide using the existing literature were calculated in this study. A total of 316 samples were randomly collected occasionally using traditional gear for a year from July 2021 to June 2022. With an accuracy of 0.01 cm and 0.01 g, each fish’s total length (TL), standard length (SL), and body weight (BW) were measured. The group from 10.00 to 10.99 cm TL was numerically leading and the b values of LWRs indicate positive allometric growth. The a3.0 was 0.005 and KF was the best for assessing the well-being of A. coila. Additionally, WR indicates that the habitat was imbalanced with higher predators. The calculated Lm, Lopt and Mw were 9.19 (~ 9.2 cm TL), 10.7 cm TL and 1.37 year−1 for A. coila in the Tetulia River, respectively. These insights are vital for future research and recommending suitable management strategies for A. coila in the Tetulia River and neighboring basins.
Tetulia河中A.coia的计算Lm、Lopt和Mw分别为9.19(~9.2cm TL)、10.7cm TL和1.37年-1。

This study describes the comprehensive explanation of life-history traits of Ailia coila, including length-frequency distribution (LFD), growth pattern (length-weight relationships, LWRs and length-length relationship, LLR), form factor (a3.0), condition factors (allometric, KA; Fulton’s, KF; relative, KR and relative weight, WR), size at first sexual maturity (Lm), optimum catchable length (Lopt) and natural mortality (Mw) from the Tetulia River in southern Bangladesh. Additionally, Lα, a3.0, Lm, Mw and Lopt from various water bodies worldwide using the existing literature were calculated in this study. A total of 316 samples were randomly collected occasionally using traditional gear for a year from July 2021 to June 2022. With an accuracy of 0.01 cm and 0.01 g, each fish’s total length (TL), standard length (SL), and body weight (BW) were measured. The group from 10.00 to 10.99 cm TL was numerically leading and the b values of LWRs indicate positive allometric growth. The a3.0 was 0.005 and KF was the best for assessing the well-being of A. coila. Additionally, WR indicates that the habitat was imbalanced with higher predators. The calculated Lm, Lopt and Mw were 9.19 (~ 9.2 cm TL), 10.7 cm TL and 1.37 year−1 for A. coila in the Tetulia River, respectively. These insights are vital for future research and recommending suitable management strategies for A. coila in the Tetulia River and neighboring basins.","PeriodicalId":38161,"journal":{"name":"Ribarstvo, Croatian Journal of Fisheries","volume":"81 1","pages":"115 - 126"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46556013","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Abstract Round goby Neogobius melanostomus is one of the three invasive Ponto-Caspian gobies found in the Sava River basin in Croatia. It has a negative effect on the native ecosystems due to its high invasive potential that enables its rapid spread upstream in inland watercourses. The objective of this study was to determine the differences in sagittal otolith and scale shape of the frontal and established populations of N. melanostomus in two different habitat types. At two sampling sites in the main course of the Sava (Babina Greda, Slavonski Brod) and in a modified habitat (Sava-Odra canal), 20 individuals of N. melanostomus were collected and analysed. The geometric morphometric method was used together with Procrustes analysis of variance, canonical variate analysis and discriminant function analysis to analyse the otolith and scale shape. Significant differences in both otolith and scale shapes were found between settled (Babina Greda) and frontal (Slavonski Brod) populations from the main course of the Sava River. The main differences were the wider anterior part of the scales and a more pronounced open indentation on the otolith of the Babina Greda population. The settled population in the Sava-Odra canal was significantly different in otolith shape from the Babina Greda population but not from the Slavonski Brod population, suggesting that the upstream migration consisted of individuals with specific phenotype and genotype. Otoliths generally expressed greater shape variability than scales and thus may be more useful for differentiating between closely related populations on a finer scale. The results of this study suggest that the shape of otoliths and scales can be used to distinguish between closely related populations of N. melanostomus from different habitats but more comprehensive studies are needed due to the small number of samples.

Abstract Season and water quality are essential indicators in the life cycle of pond ecosystems. The season is a natural factor affecting the level of water quality dynamics in shrimp cultivation in ponds. This study aims to evaluate the dynamics of differences in water quality parameters in intensive Litopenaeus vannamei ponds during dry and rainy seasons. This current study applied an ex post facto causal design based on actual field conditions. During the rainy season, water quality parameters tended to fluctuate dynamically, with the parameters of phosphate (PO4), nitrite (NO2), and total organic matter (TOM) exceeding the threshold value of water quality standards for aquaculture, with a PO4 value of 0.734 mg/L, a NO2 of 0.180 mg/L, and a TOM of 101.29 mg/L. In the dry season, water quality parameters remained stable, with only the phosphate parameter showing a value above the water quality standard threshold of 0.633 mg/L. Based on the trend of fluctuations in the two seasons, a model of equation Y = 3.979 + 0.814x was made with a significance value <α (0.05), which means that the two seasons positively correlated with the impact on fluctuations of water quality in the ponds. The results of the dynamic modelling analysis showed contradictions in water quality and nutrients during rainy and dry seasons. Water quality parameters in intensive L. vannamei cultivation during dry and rainy seasons fluctuated dynamically and differed according to the type of weather conditions and the current season.

Abstract The current study provides valuable insight into the trawl fishery operating in southern Albanian waters via an integrated approach based on high-frequency onboard monitoring trawl vessels and on-site interviews with local fishers. Multivariate analyses of the composition of species landings or economic revenue revealed groups that, depending on the group, were distinguished by improved fisheries landings and economic efficiency. The majority of the catch consisted of a variety of demersal and small- and medium-sized pelagic species, confirming the Adriatic Sea's multispecies nature. Target species identified in terms of catches and revenue imply a systematic tactic over a long period of time, and incidental catches are equally important in terms of overall group similarity. The identification of target species groups may be useful in assessing the current sampling stratification schemes.

Abstract The Mediterranean Sea is a hotspot for shark and ray extinctions and is home to the following three angelshark species: sawback angelshark Squatina aculeata, smoothback angelshark Squatina oculata, and common angelshark Squatina squatina. We conducted a questionnaire-based survey in four coastal regions of Albania, Shëngjin (Lezhë), Vlorë, Himarë (Sarandë) and Durrës, with the aim of collecting historical and current data on angelshark catches in the Albanian seas (Adriatic and Ionian Seas). Although the occurrence of common angelshark was reported by Croatian fishermen in the Adriatic Sea, we included the other two species in our study. The number of observations was minimal, although this is the first study of angelshark species sightings in Albania. It will establish a baseline study that will allow further work on the conservation of these regionally extinct and highly endangered species.
