This paper presents a language framework for a concurrent description and an implementation of a synchronization mechanism in distributed object-oriented computation. Some concurrent object-oriented languages are considered to be constructed from a user-defined function and a synchronization constraint. We propose the language for the synchronization constraint, which allows to define mutual exclusion and conditional synchronization by using declarative notations. The synchronization constraint is separated from user-defined functions, and the relation between them is described in the binding code. The binding mechanism reduces the dependency between them and contributes to code reuse. This framework makes it is easy for programmers to understand and describe the use-defined functions and synchronization constraints independently. The implementation of the synchronization mechanism is based on a reconfigurable object model that we are developing. The user-defined function and synchronization mechanism are implemented as its own separated module in the single object. Then the synchronization mechanism has flexibility and preserves the concept of object-orientation.

Available bit rate (ABR) service is a service that has been developed specifically to support data traffic over the ATM network. The source of an ABR connection transmits its data according to the rate informed by the ATM network to fairly utilize available bandwidth and minimize cell loss at the ATM layer. However, most data traffic today is connected to ATM networks via Ethernet. Earlier study showed that as TCP traffic is carried over a path with concatenated EthernetATM/ABR links, the packet queues are formed at the edge device interconnecting the Ethernet and the ATM network, instead of inside the ATM network. We propose the BDP-Aware mechanism to improve the TCP performance in such an environment. It reduces the buffer requirement and improves the TCP performance without changing the TCP protocol at the hosts.

Packet loss due to network congestion causes degradation in the quality of networked video transmitted over IP networks. Previous buffer management methods have been designed to prevent network congestion in order to reduce packet loss. However, a low packet loss ratio by itself does not necessarily translate to high video quality, so these methods do not ensure user-expected video quality; and hence, there is a need for alternative approaches to achieve user-expected video quality. This paper proposes a new buffer management scheme that focuses on achieving user-expected video quality, rather than just aiming at reducing packet loss. The proposed scheme allows the videos that share an output buffer to be guaranteed an appropriate share of the buffer when the buffer faces overflow, yet allows a complete sharing of the buffer space when it is not overflowing. The scheme also provides a mechanism that gives parts of a video lower loss than other parts. Simulation experiments show that the Quality of Service requirements of multiple videos and effective utilization of network resources can both be achieved.

Multiple access interference (MAI) is a key problem in DS-CDMA. Both the multiuser detection method and antenna array technique have been introduced to reduce the effect of MAI respectively. In this paper, combining wavelet networks with a space-time filter, we propose a novel multiuser detector (MUD). The complexity of the MUD only depends on that of the wavelet networks. With numerical simulations and performance analysis, it is shown that the MUD precedes the conventional Rake receiver and the space-time matched filter in eliminating MAI and near-far resistance.

This paper introduced a system employing hybrid DS/FH spread spectrum (SS) coupled with RS forward error-control coding. By the flexible redefinition of frequency-occupation and frequency-collision event, the frequency-occupation probability of the DS/FH SS network was analyzed. This probability was based on the simultaneous transmission number threshold and discussed in both synchronous and asynchronous circumstances, respectively. The network throughput based on the packet correct reception probability was analyzed. Two models which had finite and infinite population respectively was discussed. Finally, simulation results were given.

Heartbeat mechanism is widely used in the high availability field of monitor network service and server nodes. In this paper, we design a distributed heartbeat mechanism, which consists of one Master node and multiple Standby nodes, all running the same process of heartbeat but in different states. We experimentally demonstrate that the mechanism improves the scalability over that of the dual computer nodes and supports nice fail-over. Moreover, the process of the heartbeat only needs to maintain few states, which dramatically reduces the overheads of the system and simplifies the management of the nodes. When there are only two nodes in the network, the mechanism will degenerate to dual computer heartbeat. In current version, the mechanism only supports the switch-based architecture; it is easy to make it supporting other architectures such as Ring, etc.

Wireless communication that provides voice only is not sufficient to support the necessity of user. It is an important feature of future wireless communication to offer this capability through mobile Internet. Mobile IP allows mobile hosts to change their location and reduce the losing probability of data packets in wireless communication networks. However, Mobile IP still have some defects in handoff and route aspects. Therefore, Cellular IP protocol is proposed for routing of IP diagrams to mobile stations and fast handoff control in a limited geographical area. In this paper, a handoff method is proposed to improve Quality of Service and resource switching management to reduce data packet loss for mobile multimedia communication in hierarchical network. In the future, all-IP network and mobile multimedia communication are two important characteristics, so that IP macromobility and micromobility network architecture are combined for data packets transfer. A Soft-handoff method is also presented to improve Quality of Service (QoS) and resource switching management to reduce data packet loss.

Electronic multimedia publishing is increasingly becoming a major industrial activity, and the design of Web applications and hypermedia applications in general needs to become a well-organized and efficient process. The most important factor in making Web design efficient and effective is the availability of a suitable design model. Considering that no model can be exploited to its maximum potential unless it is supported by a proper set of development tools, we present an execution environment called the JWeb II navigation engine, which is apart of a suite of tools called JWebII. JWeb II is based on the HDM model and supports all the different phases of Web prototyping development.

In this paper, a "Circuit-sharing scheme" is proposed to design a reduced chipset for DAB (digital audio broadcasting) receiver, involved the fast Fourier transform (FFT) circuit in the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and IMDCT (inverse modified discrete cosine transform) synthesis filter in the audio decoder Comparing to the existent method, it can achieve a highly integrated, low power and small size DAB receiver. We implement the IMDCT synthesis filter of MPEG audio decoder and the 2048-point complex FFT by a single processing element with pipeline structure. Simulations demonstrate that the proposed circuit sharing can reduce the chipset area and meet the specification of DAB. The gate count is about 6692 excluding the 2048/spl times/16 RAM and 512/spl times/32 ROM.

We develop a general, theoretical temporal model for discussing synchronization and specification scheme. A temporal algebra is constructed to deal with qualitative and quantitative temporal relationships and to reason about definite and indefinite time. The algebra integrates instant points and even intervals. Several computation tables are proposed, and each table include a set of complete temporal logics. The synchronization models are generalized by composing point-interval temporal relations with qualitative and quantitative functions. The mechanism is efficiently to eliminate conflict specification and to generate synchronization scenarios. The timed framework can also handle knowledge queries, presentation schedule, and composing of the temporal semantics among distributed multimedia objects.
