, Brazil, and its application in the socio-educational units in the state. The research was based on documental analysis and semi-structured interviews. We found that the state’s socio-educational system seeks to implement institutional standards produced by the Statute of the Child and Adolescent (ECA) and the National System for Socio-Educational Care (Sinase). Nonetheless, the values that it intends to follow seem disconnected from the practices historically established in the internment units, prevailing punitive perspectives. In their perception, the maintenance of order and security is the main objective of the profession. The similarities of the discourses of women and men indicate the adoption of masculinity values, such as the use of force and brutality, seen as essential to maintain order in the prison.
