We provide new chorological, demographic, phenological, phytosociological, ecological and environmental management data of Simethis mattiazzi in Catalonia, a threatened vascular plant in the Mediterranean region. We have located 27 stands in the region of la Selva which counting give us an estimation of 176,052 individuals (22 stands). The area of occupancy is 43,594 m 2 which are distributed in 10 UTM squares of 1 km per side. Simethis is a characteristic species of Lavandulo stoechadis-Ericetum scopariae association and can be found in three different habitats (32k Erica scoparia heaths, 45b Quercus suber forests with undergrowth of acidophilous scrub and 45i Mixed forest of Q. suber and Pinus spp.), clearly preferring the 32k. However, it produces more flowers per individual in environments that are less favourable (45b and 45i). By all appearances, the predominant distribution factor in Europe and Africa is climate, which always has to be Atlantic or Submediterranean with oceanic trend. Likewise, we give conservation proposals and confirm the current IUCN status “endangered” (EN) of Simethis in Catalonia.

We investigated allozyme variation of the rare shrub Sophora koreensis in Yanggu County (South Korea), at the southern margin of the species range. To gain insights into ecological processes at the landscape level, we studied two or three populations from four localities (in total, 10 populations) in a range of ca . 6 km. We found low levels of within-population genetic variation ( %P = 13.6, A = 1.14, and H e = 0.026) and a moderate degree of among-population genetic differentiation (F ST = 0.203). The analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) revealed a substantially higher percentage of variation among populations within localities (17%) than among localities (5%). There was no significant relationship between pairwise genetic divergence and logarithm of pairwise geographic distance ( r = 0.032, P = 0.842). These results suggest limited gene flow between populations within localities, while indicating that the optimal strategy for the preservation of the genetic variation of S. koreensis is to conserve as many populations as possible.

A new species for the genus Centaurea L. (sect. Acrocentron , Asteraceae) is described: C. inexpugnabilis , sp. nov. This plant has been found in the Mallos de Riglos (Riglos, Huesca, Spain), and its distribution is currently limited to the northeastern of the Iberian Peninsula. A description and diagnosis, iconography and several tables showing the main diagnostic characters to differentiate it from its related species is reported.

Youngia japonica , introduced accidentally in urban garden areas, is recorded for the first time from the Iberian Peninsula. It has maintained its presence in the place where it was first observed without expanding, and has reappeared over the following years. A possible means of introduction is along with Zoysia , species of grass used for forming lawns as an alternative to Bermuda grass.

The status of the species and a subsequent nomenclatural combination are proposed for Achillea ceretanica , a diploid taxon endemic of eastern Pyrenees included in the A. millefolium complex. Synonymisation of A. monticola Martrin-Donos with A. ceretanica is refuted, given that the first is a clearly distinct octoploid lineage of the complex. Some comments on distribution, ecology and frequency of both are added.

Helichrysum italicum is a widely distributed species in the Mediterranean Basin, which has received controversial taxonomic treatments at infraspecific level owing to its morphological variability. In this paper we perform a detailed multivariate analysis of morphological characters using an exhaustive sampling of H. italicum . Integrating previously published molecular, chorological and newly obtained morphological data, a revised taxonomic treatment for the whole H. italicum complex is provided. On the one hand, the results obtained suggest that the Majorcan mountain populations of H. italicum subsp. microphyllum need to be considered an independent species, newly described here as Helichrysum massanellanum . On the other hand, H. italicum subspecies are recircumscribed. A new combination is proposed, H. italicum subsp. tyrrhenicum , a taxon that comprises populations from Corsica, Sardinia, Majorca coastline and Dragonera islet, whereas subsp. microphyllum is restricted to the island of Crete. With those substantial classification modifications, a complete new taxonomic treatment is presented for this group, including an identification key, synonyms, morphological descriptions, distribution areas and habitat characterization.

We provide new records of 17 exotic plants in the Baix Llobregat region observed between the years 2011 and 2014. Two species are the first records for Europe: Acacia rostellifera Benth. and Trichloris crinita (Lag.) Parodi; two are new plants for the Iberian Peninsula: Bouteloua dactyloides (Nutt.) Columbus and Nassella tenuissima (Trin.) Barkworth; three are recorded by their first time in Catalonia: Atriplex semibaccata R. Br., Oenothera speciosa Nutt. and Verbena incompta P. W. Michael; five correspond to first records in Baix Llobregat: Parkinsonia aculeata L., Phacelia tanacetifolia Benth., Physalis peruviana L., Salpichroa origanifolia (Lam.) Baill. and Verbena brasiliensis Vell. The remaining species are very rare in the studied area: Abutilon grandifolium (Willd.) Sweet, Asperugo procumbens L., Eclipta prostrata (L.) L. and Oenothera indecora Cambess.
