Pragmatic Markers in Spoken Discourse 口语中的语用标记

The roles, functions, and effects of pragmatic markers (PMs) in spoken discourse are explored in this study, with a focus on how language learners’ comprehension skills, classification and interpretation abilities, and interactions between verbal and non-verbal PMs are affected. A combination of quantitative and qualitative procedures was employed in this investigation. To evaluate how well PMs in spoken discourse were identified and understood, level 4, English Language Unit, Preparatory Studies Centre fifty participants from the University of Technology and Applied Sciences, Salalah, the Sultanate of Oman completed fifteen quick audio samples with a range of pragmatic characteristics, five additional filler audio segments, and pre-and post-test questionnaires. The study discovered that learners' comprehension of PMs—which regulate discourse structure, convey speaker purpose, and manage conversation flow—improved dramatically with targeted instruction. It emphasized the significance of PMs in the development of communication skills as well as the problems with categorizing PMs due to a lack of a standardized framework.

Multiple Intelligence-Based Language Learning System 基于多元智能的语言学习系统

The article reveals multiple intelligences play an important role in enhancing learners’ English aptitude. First of all, it is worth considering what multiple intelligences are as well as how they are equivalent to teachers’ teaching and assessment methods. The article has found that right lessons would definitely help learners explore and develop their multiple intelligences. In addition, in order to get the best results during lessons, an investigation in advance is necessary. To sum up, with the aims to help learners recognize their multiple intelligences, a teacher should consider a several factors in terms of lessons, learners as well as methods.

Pragmatic Dynamics of Some Foregrounded Computer Lexical Items in Nigerian Youth Discourse 尼日利亚青年话语中一些前置计算机词条的语用动态

This study set out to investigate instances of foregrounded computer lexical items in discourse, with the aim to examine their underlying contextual usage among some youth in Nigeria. The pragmatic dynamics of such foregrounded lexical items constitute the focus of the analysis. The pragmatic approach of conversational implicature was adopted as the theoretical framework for this study. The methodology adopted for this research was the qualitative approach. The research findings revealed that the conceptual meanings of the foregrounded computer lexical items were shifted to transcend their denotations such as to generate dependence on contextual forces for appropriate interpretation. Furthermore, it was observed that contextual factors triggered both the encoding and decoding of the deviation-type foregrounded computer lexical items. Propitiously, the notion of conversational implicature provides us with an explanation of utterance interpretation, in consonance with pragmatic norms, and consequently prevent breakdown in communication, which could be caused by deviation-type foregrounding. Based on the findings of this research, further studies on foregrounding as it relates to transfer of registers and their contextual implications are strongly recommended.

Tahar Ben Jelloun's novels are distinguished by their integration of problematic social phenomena into a purely literary form. While this isn't unique to Ben Jelloun's writing style, the author's way of crafting thought-provoking and often revolutionary experimental stories from the material of traditional Moroccan life is, at least in a way extraordinary: his characters experience social difficulties and embarrassments in their lives through the metaphor of a fictional existence of their self-perception. Thus, for example, their search for identity in their social context manifests in their search for self-perception as fictional characters and power struggles in relationships. Their relationship takes the form of a battle for control of the story. Political prisoners associate writing with their quest for freedom. This article therefore focuses on the torture, body and voice representations of Taher Ben Jelloun's This Blinding Absence of Light (2002). Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theory will be used to approach the psychological disintegration of characters in the text following such a Dark Decade experience and will borrow eclectic concepts from interdisciplinary studies; Erving's concept of Goffman's "holistic institution", Elaine Scarry's comprehensive and detailed theoretical definition and analysis of torture, and Judith Herman's study of trauma.

The Effect of Linguistic Models of a Child's Language on His Environment 儿童语言模式对环境的影响

This study used a Critical Discourse Analysis approach to examine the kid dialect differences, focusing on how a child distinguishes, reacts to, and develops their model of speech about their surroundings. This paper aims to explore the concept of academic rewriting and its application in transforming user-generated text. The primary focus of this research is to examine the mechanisms by which a kid perceives and responds to variations in dialect, as well as to explore the process by which the child constructs their linguistic framework to represent their surroundings. The initial phase of language acquisition pertains to the linguistic models that children adopt. In the developmental trajectory of several children, a recurring pattern emerges wherein the sequential influence of individuals is observed as follows: first, parents exert the most influence, followed by peers, and subsequently, adults. The concept of "Peers" as role models may be categorized into four distinct life phases: infancy, childhood, adolescence, and maturity. According to Chambers (1995:151ff).

Pulpit Interpretation in the Cameroon Baptist Convention Churches 喀麦隆浸信会教会讲坛解说

This article examines how the Cameroon Baptist Church (CBC) makes efforts to pass across the gospel message to their target population through sermon interpreting. It highlights how interpretation of sermons are carried out by lay interpreters given the necessity of interpretation in bilingual congregations. The two languages concerned are French and English, the two official languages of Cameroon. The linguistic nature of Cameroon obliges the CBC to organize bilingual church services so as to minister alternately to their bilingual audience. While interpreting is necessary and obligatory given the target church population, the problem is the quality of interpretation due to unskilled interpreters that sometimes misinterpret messages leading to break down in communication. Break downs in sermon interpretations can really be misleading because the word of God is Yes and Amen. It is therefore concluded that given the centrality of interpreting in the CBC settings, it is important for the CBC to train interpreters and make use of them for the well being of evangelism.

Intertextuality Across Genres: A Study of Homer’s the Odyssey and Suzan-Lori Parks’s Father Comes Home from the Wars 跨类型的互文性:荷马的《奥德赛》和苏珊-洛里·帕克斯的《父亲从战场归来》研究

This research work aims to show the relationship between Homer’s The Odyssey and Parks’s Father Comes Home from the Wars. It has as objective, to debunk the stereotypical norms of writing literary works, which shows that comparative analysis can only be limited to a particular genre, that is (novel to novel, play to play and poetry to poetry). This intertextual study proclaims that a literary work cannot be limited only to a particular genre but can equally cut across genres. This explains why Parks rewrites Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey into a play, Father Comes Home from the Wars, which she transforms into the American scenario. Thus, the researcher is going to carry out a comparative analysis between Homer’s epic poem and Parks’s play. Our study of the selected works has considered the way meanings are constructed by a network of cultural and social discourses which embody distinct codes, expectations and assumptions. Besides, the thematic and linguistic similarities and differences between the works of the European and American authour selected have enabled the researcher to have an insight into literary influences and affinities. This article has also studied the life experiences of the authours selected, and their historical contexts and has demonstrated that Homer had no direct influence on Parks. This work is premised on the hypothesis that intertextuality is not limited to a particular genre of writing, be it prose, poetry or drama but can equally cut across genres. Intertextuality foregrounds the notions of interconnectedness and interdependence in culture. To analyse these works, the researcher used deconstruction to debunk traditional norms of writing in contrastive studies. Although Parks subscribes to Greek mythology and the Theatre of the Absurd respectively, she deviates from her European forebear of this convention, as she presents her play Father Comes Home from the Wars, which is again not written in acts and scenes but in parts, through American realism, as she is somewhat a social critic.

It has as objective, to debunk the stereotypical norms of writing literary works, which shows that comparative analysis can only be limited to a particular genre, that is (novel to novel, play to play and poetry to poetry). This intertextual study proclaims that a literary work cannot be limited only to a particular genre but can equally cut across genres. This explains why Parks rewrites Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey into a play, Father Comes Home from the Wars, which she transforms into the American scenario. Thus, the researcher is going to carry out a comparative analysis between Homer’s epic poem and Parks’s play. Our study of the selected works has considered the way meanings are constructed by a network of cultural and social discourses which embody distinct codes, expectations and assumptions. Besides, the thematic and linguistic similarities and differences between the works of the European and American authour selected have enabled the researcher to have an insight into literary influences and affinities. This article has also studied the life experiences of the authours selected, and their historical contexts and has demonstrated that Homer had no direct influence on Parks. This work is premised on the hypothesis that intertextuality is not limited to a particular genre of writing, be it prose, poetry or drama but can equally cut across genres. Intertextuality foregrounds the notions of interconnectedness and interdependence in culture. To analyse these works, the researcher used deconstruction to debunk traditional norms of writing in contrastive studies. A Pragmatic Study of Politeness Strategies in the Inaugural Speeches of Civilian Heads of Government in Nigeria 尼日利亚文职政府首脑就职演说中礼貌策略的语用研究

The study is a pragmatic examination of the use of language by civilian heads of government in Nigeria. The study was informed by the need to understand the pragmatic strategies employed in crafting the presidential inaugural speech being the president’s first official speech. It is believed that the inaugural speech is a comprehensive piece of political communication that affords the speaker the opportunity to say so much in one fell swoop. The objective is to unravel the deployment of the politeness strategy in conveying the speaker’s intention. The study engages the politeness model proposed by Geoffrey Leech to interrogate the excerpts selected for the study. The study utilises data from the inaugural addresses of selected civilian heads of government. The study observes that political leaders in this category employ adverbial, adjectival and hedging as a pragmatic strategy for maintaining the self-esteem of the addressees. Nigeria’s civilian heads of government display generosity in praising the addressees while being modest in praising the speaker.

Language Changes and the Evolution of Christian Doctrines in Cameroon 喀麦隆的语言变化和基督教教义的演变

This article examines how the world through Cameroon is experiencing rapid changes in the sphere of Christianity and how language is responding to such changes. Language is a tool of communication that enables societal realities to be effected. New doctrines, practices and ideologies conceived by denomination and church planters are advocated via meaningful words and expressions, including absolute adjectives in church names, songs, crusade and sermon themes, to communicate the intended information to participants. Preachers use words and expressions that are captivating enough to appeal to the senses of their followers and potential followers. They use words and expressions that purport to unveil the quality, objectives and mission statements of their churches in an attempt to attract members. Most of the names insinuate miraculous and deliverance practices that seem to meet the needs of potential followers, but the issue is that if the language of persuasion does not meet the needs of the converts at the end of the day, language use will be volatile as converts will subsequently backslide.

Attitudes of Chadians Studying in Cameroon Towards English 在喀麦隆学习的乍得人对英语的态度

The elimination of barriers between many states in the world today has led to significant movements of people from one place to another, especially for educational motives or in search of greener pastures. Such movements often lead to the encounter with new languages and cultures, as it is the case with Chadians who move to Cameroon for further studies. Given the bilingual nature of Cameroon, which is their host nation, most of these students not only get to meet English, which is one of the official languages, but are also bound to study it so as to guarantee success in their studies. This study investigates the attitudes of some Chadians studying in the University of Yaoundé I towards English. The informants for the study are made up of 100 students drawn from four different departments of the Faculty of Arts, Letters and Social Sciences. The results from the analysis of the data reveal that 60% of the students show negative attitudes towards English, given that it is somewhat new to them and 40% of the students had a positive attitude towards English, especially because they consider the importance of English in the world today and also because they use it for examination purposes.
