The Impact of Knowledge on the Interpretation of Ethics 知识对道德诠释的影响

The overall theme of this article is the relationship between knowledge, religion, and ethics in Islam. The first goal is to show how the concept of knowledge has been understood in relation to religion and intellectual life and what the relationship is between universal, philosophical, and religious knowledge. The second goal is to show, using examples from Islamic philosophy of religion, how a certain concept of knowledge affects the interpretation of morals and Islamic ethics. This implies, among other things, a discussion of epistemology, the interpretation of the Qur'an, and the definition of ethical principles. A general assumption is that the definition of a Muslim as a moral agent – which is considered one of the central issues of the Qur'an, Sunnah, and Islam in general – is not given as an unequivocal category, but is subject to constant discussion that takes place at different levels and areas. This is especially evident in modern Islamic philosophical-theological discourse, where Fazlur Rahman, Mohammed Arkoun, Hassan Hanafi, Abdolkarim Soroush, and Amina Wadud are only some of the important actors of the discussion.

Many Muslim theologians have been engaged in the debate over environmental destruction, global warming, and humanity's role in the emission of greenhouse gases threating the Earth, humanity, and all animal and plant life. One element of the debate in the West has been the role played by Christianity in the environmental and climate crisis. The Christian creation theology, which elevates human beings to lords of creation with sovereignity over the Earth, has been a prominent target of criticism. Its perspective has been accused of conferring legitimacy upon humanity's plundering of nature. A similar viewpoint can be found in the Islamic creation theology, which presents human beings as the supreme creation in whose service God has created everything under the heavens. Muslim ecotheologians reject any criticism of the Islamic creation theology as a contributing factor to the environmental and climate crisis. Rather, they seek the root of these problems in the Western worldview and its anthropocentrism and individualism. Furthermore, the criticism is directed at Cartesian deism, industrialism, colonialism, the capitalist economic system, and, last but not least, the European model's claim to universalism. These are identified as the most important factors that have laid the foundation for a destructive impact on the environment and climate.

This article explores the themes of tradition and renewal in Islamic theology through a reading of Abū Ḥāmid al-Ghazālī's Fayṣal al-tafriqa bayna l-islām wa-l-zandaqa ("The Decisive Criterion for Distinguishing Islam from Heresy"), a classic work about the boundaries of theological tolerance in Islam. The article begins by discussing descriptive and normative usages of the term "Islamic" and then moves on to reflect on al-Ghazālī's distinction between revelation and interpretation, his "rule of interpretation" (qānūn al-taʾwīl) and his emphasis on the importance of ethical and spiritual virtues for all intellectual activity, including theology, in relation to questions concerning tradition and renewal. It draws on Alasdair MacIntyre's notion of tradition as "an historically extended, socially embodied argument" and argues that attempts at theological renewal must, of course, be rooted in the foundational texts of the overarching Islamic tradition, mainly the Qur'an and the hadith corpus, but also in the historically extended and socially embodied arguments of its subtraditions, such as the Ashʿarī and Māturīdī schools of theology. The purpose of the article is to contribute to the ongoing discussion about theological renewal in the Islamic tradition and to the ongoing discussion about normative studies of Islamic theology at European universities by putting al-Ghazālī in dialogue with MacIntyre.

This article surveys how "saints" breaking away from their biological families have impacted the view of the self in the West. By employing the historical narrative of philosopher Charles Taylor and the theory of late sociologist David Martin, the question is raised whether the tendency to relativize family has given rise to a new conception of the self as autonomous and buffered. Texts about Clare of Assisi, Dutch anabaptist martyr Elizabeth Dirks, and Swedish Free Baptist Helge Åkeson are used. The texts are understood as functionally hagiographical, and the "saints" represented overlap in time with key movements in the narrative of Taylor. The article suggests that the "saints" have impacted their social worlds in three ways: in their break with their biological families they have made rifts in a world where the personal and familial are in one piece with the political order. They can be said to have secularized the world by giving rise to a more buffered conception of the self. Lastly, however, by assuming some of the values of their times, they have preserved something of the social worlds they rebelled against – thus the communities in succession of the saints does not fit neatly in the impersonal order of modernity. The dialectics of the relation between the "saints" and their social worlds can be said to give contingent rise to a sort of communitarian liberalism, a perspective which can be used to critique, for example, Radical Orthodox nostalgia for a lost medieval Christendom.

In April 1919, the publication of the first part of the edited collection Det andliga nutidsläget och kyrkan ("The Contemporary Spiritual Condition and the Church") caused an intense debate within the Church of Sweden and in the daily press. The editors of the book were driven by ideals of open and honest dialogue about religious and ethical reformation in a time of deep spiritual distress and invited contributions from academia and lay people as well as clergy. Some of the contributions have been analyzed in previous research, as examples of contemporary theological debates. This article presents an analysis of the contributions of the books and of the most salient themes in the debate, covering 192 newspaper articles between April 1919 and May 1920. The analysis contributes to previous research by the additional new material concerning how theological issues were connected to contemporary political and cultural debate. This concerns the implications of modernization in contemporary Sweden, such as individualization, social justice, and secularization. Furthermore, the debate in the newspapers, previously not thoroughly researched, highlights how the book became a locus for issues such as participation of the laity in theological debate, and the role of the Church as a public authority in a secular, modernized society. These themes present fruitful openings for further research on the role of Christian actors in new forms of public debate shaping modernity in Sweden.

The editors of the book were driven by ideals of open and honest dialogue about religious and ethical reformation in a time of deep spiritual distress and invited contributions from academia and lay people as well as clergy. Some of the contributions have been analyzed in previous research, as examples of contemporary theological debates. This article presents an analysis of the contributions of the books and of the most salient themes in the debate, covering 192 newspaper articles between April 1919 and May 1920. The analysis contributes to previous research by the additional new material concerning how theological issues were connected to contemporary political and cultural debate. This concerns the implications of modernization in contemporary Sweden, such as individualization, social justice, and secularization. Furthermore, the debate in the newspapers, previously not thoroughly researched, highlights how the book became a locus for issues such as participation of the laity in theological debate, and the role of the Church as a public authority in a secular, modernized society.
