Objective: to identify the barriers for the application of research in practice, by Nursing academics and university students.Methods: a descriptive cross-sectional study, including n=27 academics (all the eligible staff) and n= 229 Nursing students randomly selected. A questionnaire on sociodemographic and training data was administered, and the Barriers scale, which integrates characteristics of the professional, characteristics of the organization, quality of research, presentation and accessibility of information; and the perception that the amount of research is “overwhelming”. A higher score from 1 to 4 shows the higher degree in which each factor is perceived as a barrier.Results: the study included 17 academics and 229 students. In the group of academics, the most identified barriers were: “Nursing staff does not feel they have enough authority in order to change the care for a patient” (mean= 3.17; SD= 0.80) and “The Nursing staff sees limited benefits in research for their professional activity” (mean= 3.11; SD = 0.85). On the other hand, the most identified barriers in the student group were: “The amount of research information is overwhelming” (mean= 2.36; SD= 1.23) and “The premises are not adequate for its implementation”. Academics identified a significantly higher number of barriers than students (p< 0.001) for all factors, except for Quality of research (p= 0.676).Conclusions: there was a prevalence of barriers for the use of research associated with the characteristics of the organization and the professionals, which coincided with those reported by other studies conducted with Nursing professionals and/or students.

Objective: to identify the conditioning factors for implementation and duration of breastfeeding during COVID-19 from the perspective of midwives from the Castellón province (Spain).Methods: a qualitative study conducted in 2021 through four focus groups (FGs) with midwives from the Castellón province. Data collection was carried out via videoconferences with audio recording, which were transcribed for subsequent discourse analysis with the Atlas Ti program.Results: the enablers for breastfeeding identified by midwives were the promotion of breastfeeding for mothers and the development of access to resources to solve troublesome situations, among others. They reported as barriers the maternal beliefs regarding feeding with artificial formulas based on their biography, a biased social consideration on breastfeeding, lack of protocols for colostrum extraction, and deficient quality of information in social networks, mostly. They acknowledged that the COVID-19 pandemic had positive and negative impacts on breastfeeding. Some measures came up to optimize breastfeeding promotion, such as an increase in the midwife/pregnant mother ratio, home care 24 hours after discharge, unification of protocols among centres, extending to six months the time for incorporation to work, and adaptation of breastfeeding promotion in social networks.Conclusions: conditioning factors for breastfeeding were reported, originating in the Spanish sociosanitary scenario, which are useful as the basis for designing specific promotion actions. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on breastfeeding must be considered in situations of prolonged lockout of mothers.

Objective: to understand the competence level achieved by Nursing Degree students in their fourth year for addressing gender-based violence, and to compare their competence level with that acquired by first year students.Method: a descriptive cross-sectional study. Study population: 1st and 4th students of Nursing Degree at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (Madrid, Spain). Data collection: validated questionnaire Physician Readiness to Manage Intimate Partner Violence Survey (PREMIS).Results: 47 Nursing students; 96.1% in first year and 85.7% in fourth year were female. 80.8% (n= 21) of first year students and 57.1% (n= 12) of fourth year claimed that they had never received any training on Intimate Partner Violence against Women (IPVAW) before starting their degree. 52.4% (n= 11) of fourth year students stated that they had received theoretical training vs. 34.6% (n= 9) of first year students; and 23.8% (n= 5) of fourth year students had received practical training vs. 3.8% (n= 1) of first year students. Students in their fourth year achieved higher scores in those items related to self-perception of their skills of action towards the victim, and knowledge about the IPVAW. In first and fourth year, they identified that being a woman was a top factor of risk for suffering abuse. Students from both years felt less qualified to complete the legal requirements associated with abuse reporting.Conclusion: the implementation of a teaching guide improved the ability of students to detect cases of IPVAW, showing the difficulties to apply the knowledge acquired into specific scenarios.
