This essay is the result of reflection elicited by three ERC-funded projects on the Early Modern Mediterranean. From their results, it emerged that the interconnectivity generated by the legal interactions in that time and place played a vital role in the shaping of the modern world. We need to recognise the importance of this legal history and reassess the neglected importance of Mediterranean developments within global history, thus giving it its proper place in our research agendas. This conclusion is discussed within the framework of recent historiographical developments across different sub-disciplines and national historiographies.

Rereading Travellers to the East aim to offer a new perspective on travel literature, the question of nation-building and the history of orientalism. Rereading Travellers focuses on the rereadings to which early modern travel literature about Asia has been subjected by different actors involved in the political, economic, cultural and intellectual life of post-unification Italy. The authors highlight how this literature has been reinterpreted and reused for political and ideological purposes in the context of the formation and reformation of collective identities, from the Risorgimento to the Fascist regime and the early republic. By showing the potential of the notion of rereading, the volume outlines a history of the political and cultural legacy of travel literature which goes well beyond Italy.

In order to tackle the ongoing Cromohs debate of global history, the author draws on anthropologist Frederik Barth's 'generative model' of the relationship between the general and the particular, art historian Siegfried Kracauer's reflections on history, Sanjay Subrahmanyam's connected histories, Nathan Wachtel's 'histoire régressive,' and his own foundational expertise on micro-history.Image Caption: Pietro Vesconte, Mappa mundi, in Marino Sanudo, Liber secretorum fidelium crucis super Terrae Sanctae recuperatione et conservatione, ed. This article deals with one of the Ladino versions of the Toledot Yeshu preserved in the Ets Haim library in Amsterdam. It is an exceptional manuscript in cursive Mughrabi script, copied around the middle of the seventeenth century but showing significant traces of having originally been composed around the middle of the sixteenth century. The importance of this document goes far beyond its role as the probable Vorlage used by Johannes Jacob Ulrich for his Hebrew-Latin edition Historia Jeschuae Nazareni (1705). Providing an apparently vivid reflection of the cultural context in the Iberian societies to which the Judaisers and converts belonged, the text of the Istoriah de Iesus natsareno (איסטרייה די ישו״ז נאצארינו) is an excellent example of an original process of rewriting. At the same time, the work carried out in composing this version and its successive reception in Hebrew, Latin and Judeo-German translations can help to clarify the complex relationships between redaction, translation and rewriting in the narrative traditions of Jewish versions of the life of Jesus of Nazareth.
