Dental caries is a common but preventable oral disease which, if left untreated, can result in the development of an abscess or the death of a tooth. Dental caries can have a significant negative effect on the health and well-being of children and young people, so it is vital that they are supported to perform and maintain effective oral hygiene. This article describes how dental caries develop and the risks associated with the disease and outlines some evidence-based strategies for performing effective oral hygiene and maintaining oral health. The author also considers the role of the children's nurse in various settings in promoting oral health and supporting children and families to perform and maintain effective oral hygiene.

In their Nursing Children and Young People opinion article Children's nursing: is it time to rethink field-specific training? (see March issue), Edward Purssell and Rohit Sagoo invited us to ‘rethink' field-specific training. They argue that the COVID-19 pandemic exposed children's nurses as ill-equipped to care for adult patients, and that neither adult nor children's nurses are ‘trained' to care for those aged 16-24 years.

Community children's nurses provide a vital service between the hospital and home environment, supporting children, young people and families with their health needs. In the UK, the number of educational pathways providing a specialist practitioner qualification in community children's nursing has declined significantly in recent years. This has left many community children's nursing services with little or no access to educational programmes, despite the rising demand. The four UK governments, together with regulatory bodies such as the Nursing and Midwifery Council, have embarked on ambitious transformation of post-registration career frameworks and standards, the long-term impact of which is uncertain. This article discusses an approach that one community children's nursing service in Scotland took to address these challenges by liaising with a local university and accessing a bespoke advanced practice programme.

The number of children and young people admitted to children's wards with an eating disorder has increased significantly since the start of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. In the most extreme cases, those with severe malnutrition may need to be fed via a nasogastric tube without their consent. Children's nurses working on hospital wards may therefore care for children and young people who need to receive nasogastric tube feeding under physical restraint. This article offers an overview of eating disorders and their detrimental effects as well as practical advice for children's nurses, supporting them to provide safe, compassionate and person-centred care to their patients.

Malnutrition can be defined as 'a state in which a deficiency of nutrients such as energy, protein, vitamins and minerals cause measurable adverse effects on body composition, function or clinical outcome'. Identification of malnutrition in children, therefore, requires an understanding of their growth. Faltering growth is the failure to achieve the expected rate of weight gain, linear and brain growth at a normal rate for age, which is a known consequence of inadequate nutrition. There are many medical, social and behavioural factors that can place a child at risk of malnutrition and faltering growth. This article examines malnutrition and faltering growth in children. It discusses monitoring and measurement of child growth, the aetiology and consequences of malnutrition, some risk factors and malnutrition screening. The article also considers some prevention strategies and the role of the nurse in the prevention of malnutrition.
