Inflammatory rheumatic diseases, and rheumatoid arthritis in particular, lead to changes in both static and dynamic foot structures as part of the recurrent inflammatory process. The inflammatory involvement of the foot has a decisive influence on gait mechanics and the rheumatic deformities can massively impair the independence of the affected patients. There is a need to assess patients with rheumatic diseases for functional disorders of the foot to implement early prevention of disease progression through exercise. This article provides an overview of established therapeutic treatments for rheumatic foot deformities depending on the functional stage.
