Where to open maritime containers: A decision model at the interface of maritime and urban logistics

After an era of developing large-scale hinterland access for maritime containers by use of rail and inland waterways, research interest and practice has witnessed a slight shift towards port-centric logistics. The big question is where to open import containers and close and seal the ones for export goods. Is it better done in the port vicinity or should the maritime containers also be used for transport to and from the hinterland? In other words, where is the stuffing and stripping operations best located? Focusing on the import of goods loaded in maritime containers, this article provides a model for assessing the options of locating Distribution Centres (DCs) in the vicinity of the port or in the hinterland, or using a combination of the two. The model is illustrated by a case study of import through the Port of Gothenburg, Sweden, comparing a port-centric DC with a location in Falkoping, 130 kms inland. Unless more than 85% of the shipments out of DCs are bound for Gothenburg and its vicinity, the assessment favours stripping the maritime containers in the DC in Falkoping.

A freight village is an option to reduce the externalities of urban freight transport and improve the efficiency of this activity. In this sense, its location is a factor in the accomplishment of the benefits promoted by city logistics solutions. This paper evaluates the use of freight villages for urban goods distribution. We used a multi-criteria decision analysis to identify the viewpoints of stakeholders involved in this solution (carriers, experts and policymakers). We applied this method to a case study in the city of Palmas, Brazil. The results indicate that there are different perspectives on the relevance of the criteria analysed, reinforcing the need for dialogue and participation of various stakeholders in the planning of urban freight transport, to encourage logistical solutions consistent with the requirements of urban freight transport.

Understanding CSR and sustainability integration patterns into the corporate governance and organisational processes of a ship management company: a case study

In recent years there has been a growing use of corporate social responsibility and sustainable development concepts, both as international policy frameworks and as self-regulating business models. The International Maritime Organization, guided by its recent commitment to contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, has acknowledged and encouraged the engagement of these principles to the shipping industry. However, the literature review showed some limited research to their practical application and understanding at the ship management level. Through an adopted case study strategy and applied content analysis method, this paper explores how CSR and sustainable development are integrated and diffused into the corporate governance structure and organizational processes of a shipping company. The results underscore the extensive handling of aspects of CSR and sustainable development throughout company’s strategy and organizational processes. However, company issues falling within fair operating practices and areas of community involvement do appear to be lagging behind.

Coronavirus has changed businesses profoundly, and argumentation goes that small companies have been hurt seriously. This research analyses survey responses of mostly Finnish companies out of the effects of pandemic. Findings show that small manufacturing and logistics companies have been hurt somewhat in their ability to serve customers as medium and large companies have performed well. Small companies also have lower expectations to continue their operations in China and Russia. In the future small companies do not expect inventory investment to grow that much either, and their transportation modes reaching China and Russia will not change in such great extent as what is the case with medium and large companies. However, it seems that railways will be preferred over other transportation modes in the following decade. Among small companies, transportation mode shares are taken from all other modes, while in medium and large they are mostly arising from air freight. © 2021 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.. ©2021 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.。
