This is a fi ne collection of fi fteen essays, enriched further by a personal appreciation from the dedicatee ’ s father, Derek Murray. The volume is produced as a sign of gratitude for Ruth Gouldbourne ’ s work at the point of her sixtieth birthday (challenging the usual practice of only producing a Festschrift on a person ’ s retirement). The sheer breadth of topics covered in the book – from Linda Wilson ’ s fascinating analysis of gendered prayer language in the Baptist Magazine (1850 – 1870) to Paul Fiddes ’ illuminating discussion of Shakespeare and Spirituality – indicate the extensive range of the dedicatee ’ s interests. Despite this breadth, there is a common theme which recurs in many of the volume ’ s essays (seven of the fi fteen), namely the impor-tance of paying attention to the role of women. This is hardly surprising given Rev Dr Gouldbourne ’ s own work in this area - see for example her The Flesh and the Feminine: Gender and Theology in the Writings of Caspar Schwenckfeld (Milton Keynes: Paternoster, 2006) and her article ‘ Baptists, Women and Ministry ’ in Feminist Theology 26.1 (2017). This theme is also addressed from a wide range of approaches in the book: hence Ernest C. Lucas challenges the perception of Proverbs as a misogynistic text whilst Janice O ’ Brien draws attention to the signi fi cance of Emily Georgiana Kemp. I particularly enjoyed Karen Smith ’ s essay which challenges the common perception that Baptists were silent in the face of the su ff rage movement. Instead she persuasively argues that ‘ many Baptists cooperated together to encourage greater involvement of women in society and in the church in general, and more speci fi cally to give women the right to vote ’ (p.69).

ABSTRACT Initially drawn to this subject because Culross wrote a nineteenth-century biography on John Ryland Jr. (1753–1825) who was the subject of my PhD, I encountered letters held at Bristol Baptist College noting the friendship between James Culross and C.H. Spurgeon, along with their correspondence with others, during the Downgrade Controversy. This two part publication seeks to convey the central contents of their correspondence during this controversy, and probe the essence of their subtly divergent views of Baptist confessionalism in an attempt to gain a more complete understanding of what was a complex controversy.

ABSTRACT Bristol Baptist College, founded in 1720 on the basis of a deed of gift of 1679, is the oldest Baptist theological college in the world. It absorbed the influence of the Enlightenment and was dedicated to growth through the energetic preaching of the gospel. The college served as an international agency and at home became a pillar of the Baptist establishment. During the first half of the twentieth century it functioned as a Free Church institution and in the second half became more broadly ecumenical. It adapted to the needs of the twenty-first century.

Building on a Common Foundation: The Baptist Union of Scotland 1869–2019

This is an exceptionally detailed account of the Baptist Union of Scotland from its origins up until almost the present day. However, despite the level of detail, Talbot’s account never becomes bogged down. It simply moves effortlessly through the passage of time highlighting how the unfolding strategic vision of the Union’s founders served to support and enhanced the life of Scotland’s Baptist churches. The timeline 1869–2019 is neatly divided into accessible chunks with separate chapters covering the First and Second World Wars. As for the chapters themselves they have an easy rhythm encompassing ministry, mission, ecumenical relationships and association with the wider Baptist family. Obviously, there are times in any organisation when points of tension arise. Talbot does not avoid these. Moreover, he handles with great sensitivity the Union’s struggles over the appointment of women as ministers, the tensions with the Baptist College and its ecumenical involvement. What is more, in these three areas, Talbot’s account of the Union’s actions reflects the difficulties many individual congregations continue to face as they attempt to navigate the changing social, philosophical, and theological landscape. If there is a weakness in Talbot’s writing it is that it is overly positive, particularly in his assessment of the post-war period. Although many historians and social commentators portray this as a bleak time for the church Talbot highlights the strategies developed by the Union to stem the tide of ever dwindling numbers. However, despite this positivity, Talbot does not neglect to mention that in some cases churches fail to flourish and close. Obviously, there is a question as to whether this work will appeal to an audience outside of Scotland. The answer to this may be found in Talbot’s writing style which makes this comprehensive account of the Scottish Baptist Union such a compelling read. Therefore, for a reader with an interest in Baptist life, Building on a Common Foundation easily justifies its place on the bookshelf be that within, or without, Scotland.

phenomenon of Judaizing. Although not central to his argument, Cottrell-Boyce observes that when in seventeenth-century England, Christians and Jews did encounter each other, we find them ‘talking at each other, rather than to each other’ (246). Great strides have been made in Jewish-Christian relations since then. Even so, I could not help wondering whether a similar observation might be made of Baptists and Jews even today.
