Upon joining the Northwestern University cheerleading team, a female student‐athlete signed an agreement stating she would be present when coaching staff required her to attend an event. The cheerleader claimed the head coach ordered all female cheerleaders to attend fundraisers and alumni events in cheer uniforms that left most of their bodies exposed. The coach allegedly told cheerleaders they should prioritize (1) keeping fans and alumni happy and (2) appearing as fun girls even if they were touched inappropriately.

Much has changed in higher education, especially since the pandemic, but some things about the student affairs profession remain the same, according to Karl Brooks, Ed.D., Vice President for Student Affairs at Oakton College, a two‐year community college in Illinois. “At the core, our work centers around supporting students and their development, providing timely services, and helping them develop their learning experiences,” said Brooks, who has worked in student affairs for 33 years. “We continue to celebrate an inclusive environment where all can feel connected and pursue their aspirations and goals, as we help them to meet those aspirations and goals,” he added.

Student‐vets face gap between housing stipend, actual needs 学生退伍军人面临住房津贴与实际需求之间的差距
Pub Date : 2024-01-22 DOI: 10.1002/say.31349

A pair of studies by the Pew Charitable Trusts point out the financial hardships student‐veterans face when transitioning to higher education, even when using the GI Bill. One study found student‐veterans may take out more student loans to cover gaps between the monthly housing allotment from the GI Bill and actual housing costs. The other analysis found living expenses — housing in particular — were the top expense covered by student loans for student‐veterans.
