Recent studies show that the combined use of large-volume metrology (LVM) systems (e.g., laser trackers, rotary-laser automatic theodolites, photogrammetric systems, etc.) can lead to a systematic reduction in measurement uncertainty and a better exploitation of the available equipment. The objective of this paper is to present some diagnostic tests for combinations of LVM systems that are equipped with distance and/or angular sensors. Two are the tests presented: a global test to detect the presence of potential anomalies during measurement and a local test to isolate any faulty sensor(s). This diagnostics is based on the cooperation of sensors of different nature, which merge their local measurement data, and it can be implemented in real-time, without interrupting or slowing down the measurement process. The description of the tests is supported by several experimental examples. [Submitted 28 March 2017; Accepted 27 December 2017]

Micro-metal forming that offers solutions for micro-part manufacturing has developed rapidly over many years. In this paper, research clustering on mechanical micro-sheet-metal forming system is described, and a review is presented. Trending research topics in recent years are then discussed. The process forming investigation is more interesting than other aspects, as size effect phenomena at the micro-level influence the quality of the micro-product. It is concluded that more efforts are still needed to fill the gap in developing micro-forming technology to meet the industrial application requirements, especially in producing final products with good quality, which can be achieved only with good material properties, high tooling technology, proper working parameters and sophisticated material handling in precision forming machines. The optimum selection of process parameters is essential for a designer, as it incur high initial investment, power and; operating and maintenance costs. This article presents optimisation aspects of resistance spot welding process using cuckoo search algorithm. The parameters are studied critically to obtain the optimum settings satisfying one or more quality characteristics. Some constrained and unconstrained single as well as multi-objective optimisation problems related to the practical case studies are solved. The obtained results are compared with those derived by the past researchers. It is found that the present results are better than the previous results in all the cases. The solved examples illustrated a novel effectiveness of the presented algorithm and its application suitability in the field of resistance spot welding. This work investigates the cutting performance of chamfered PCBN tools in hard turning of GCr15 bearing steel. Experimental study was performed on a NC lathe. Cutting forces were measured by using a dynamometer. Cutting temperature was measured by using an infrared thermal imager. The variation of cutting forces and cutting temperature with the chamfer angles are investigated and discussed. The surface roughness of the workpiece and flank wear of the tool during the machining is concerned, and the relationship between the surface roughness and flank wear is studied. The tool rejection criteria for the hard turning of GCr15 steel is proposed considering surface roughness and flank wear. The wear patterns of the tool were investigated using scanning electron microscope (SEM), and the wear mechanism is discussed. It is found that crater and adhesion are the dominant wear mechanism of the rake face, and abrasive wear is the dominant wear mechanism of the flank of the PCBN tool in hard turning of GCr15 steel.
