For many urban inhabitants in Asian countries, Kampongs are residential areas characterized by lack of facilities and infrastructures. They are also assumed to be unclean because of the absence of domestic waste management. Taking a case study of the Kampung Sewu of Surakarta, this work aims to address both, which are the provision of one of the facilities needed ie. playgrounds for kids/children, and the management of plastic waste by recycling it into eco-bricks. A specific method is used for this work. The provision of the facility is organized in a participatory way where the users (ie. the children and the community) decide the type and location of the playground. Then the physical works are conducted with users who take part in producing eco-bricks as building material and erecting the structure itself. The work concludes the participatory approach which is considerably appropriate with this selected case. Participatory design involving children is created to meet the need for the playground. However, the use of plastic waste for construction reveals that locally collected waste is not sufficient enough to be the raw material for the eco-brick.

Javanese people believe that between "containers" with "content" required the balance, alignment, and even harmony that created peace of mind, prosperity in welfare, and prosperity in life. The harmony between the container and the content is symbolized by the existence of the unity concept of the microcosm (human) with the macrocosm (the universe). This paper is intended to reveal the consciousness of Javanese people over the omah (Javanese traditional house) and symbolic meaning of local Javanese wisdom that is loaded with morality and spirituality of life through the expression of omah as an expression of the beauty of Javanese culture. Uncovering consciousness is like unpacking discourse. What is done or discussed in the discourse, as is the case with the architecture of omah, is always the will and power, which in this case is dissected using qualitative methods and descriptive qualitative and interpretive data analysis techniques that use a hermeneutic approach. The results of this study are two conclusions. Firstly, Javanese people put local wisdom into an important part in building the architectural identity of their residence which developed according to Javanese metaphysics and culture itself. Secondly, in Javanese architecture, especially in omah buildings, the symbol of inherent local wisdom is something that has functional and life value, even as an expression of the beauty of Javanese culture which embodies the philosophical message of Javanese view of life. Keywords—discourse, local wisdom, Javanese architecture

Kampong Magersari, a cultural heritage site, situated in the Sunanate Palace area in Surakarta City, is unique because of its physical, economical and socio-cultural hereditary potency. These qualities, though located in a conflict area in which there is no single and legitimate authority, can endure and will make the kampong a popular tourist destination. Therefore, the understanding of such potency is the elementary part in developing culture-based tourism. Besides possessing cultural heritage buildings, such as the residences of Ndalem (noblesmen) and Magersari (the residence of abdi dalem/courtiers) as its main potential resources, the kampong also possesses promising resources such as Javanese arts and culture, creative industries, traditional culinary delights and cultural rituals that can be developed further. This research aims to identify the characteristics of Kampong Magersari as an important potential part of tourism development. Data and information were collected through field observations, in-depth interviews, and relevant documents. This research found that Magersari has many potential strengths as a cultural tourism kampong, because there are 14 Ndalem Kapangeranan (noblemen’s residences), 3 creative industry areas, 6 art studios, 10 annual cultural events, and 4 potential sources of culinary delights. All these attractions complement the old Magersari buildings throughout the area that can also be strong bases for developing a cultural tourism village. Furthermore, this community-based tourism program also involves tourists in the making of Javanese arts and cultural-centric products. Hence, all these initiatives and potential developments can support the realization of Surakarta as a developed, autonomous, prosperous city of culture. Keywords—magersari, surakarta sunanate palace, heritage, culture-based tourism

Jeron Beteng in Yogyakarta have evolved throughout history in relation to the existence of the Palace of Yogyakarta. Inhabitants of Jeron Beteng have been living there for generations and their activities are reflecting the support to the preservation of court culture. Some inhabitants are still dedicating their life as court servants (abdi dalem) and some are still performing the traditional art of dancing, batik and wood puppets. Jeron Beteng is under pressure of the modern art of living, yet inhabitants are eager to preserve the inherited culture. The purpose of this paper is to explore the sense of place from the perspective of residents that makes Jeron Beteng appealing as a well-preserved historic place. The study is qualitative in its approach, and conducted through field observation and unstructured interviews with residents who are court servants and engaged with cultural activities. The locus of the study is distinct settlements in Jeron Beteng: Kampung Kadipaten, Kampung Nogosari, Kampung Taman, Kampung Patehan, Kampung Gamelan, and Kampung Mantrigawen. The results of the study indicated that Jeron Beteng is sustained as a historical place because residents are continuing cultural activities that are related to the court culture. Besides that, history of place, spirituality, cultural values, and social life of residents are significant factors that have created the sense of place in Jeron Beteng. Keywords—sense of place, historical place, sustainability, Jeron Beteng

The strategic geographic position with extensive land and sea areas makes Indonesia rich in cultural heritages. Other than that, Dutch Colonial Government which ruled for a relatively long time in Indonesia also left some cultural heritages. Those cultural heritages are believed to have a potential to attract tourists, and one of the cultural heritages is the buildings. By using grounded research and taking some cases this paper will describe the potential of the buildings in one cultural heritage area in Bandung city that attracts many tourists. The buildings discussed are the residential buildings built during the Dutch colonial government era. After the independence, those buildings were acquisitioned by the Indonesian government and its army to be used as dwelling houses. The diversity of activities offered in this area is one of the supporting factors that attract the tourists, presented with artistic style as a reflection of the cultural diversity in the form of hotels, restaurants and factory outlets. The results of the research showed that uniqueness of architecture style and location potential have created specific recreation experiences as the attractiveness that change the area into one of the tourist destinations in Bandung city. Adaptive re-use concept which is implemented to the buildings is believed optimizing the built-in area more effectively than building new buildings. The research questions addressed in this study are: Does the adaptive re-use concept have impact to the buildings and surroundings?;What kind of building transformation is the right one as an effort to adapt to the new function? Adaptive re-use is expected to be one of the conservation efforts to revive buildings and the conserved area by maintaining the existing built environment in the city. Nations’ leaders throughout history have left a record of that leadership in the form of architecture. That record can be a monument, building, or any other grand or not so grand gesture. This activity was designed to show the authority and power of an entire nation at a given moment in time. Indonesia has had six leaders of state in its 65 years of independence. They usually leave a symbol or sign from their period of leadership. Those representations of power, in the form of architectural space, are not only created from a pride but also a conflict in that societal period. This paper discusses the signs and symbols of architecture as seen in urban facilities and housing design. Sign and Symbol in architecuter has been especially revealed in the disharmony seen in space authorization since the governance of president Soekarno through to the reformation era. The descriptive method is applied to trace the signs and symbols left by all leaders of Indonesia in the form of architecture. The semiotics theory is employed in this paper to analyze building design. The research results reveal the input of Indonesia’s leaders, the architectural signs of such leadership with their visions of sustainable environments and, where those signs inspire pride and harmony rather than conflict.

Terrace houses are the typical housing typology in Malaysia. Thus, study on thermal comfort is always associated with terrace houses. Installing roof thermal insulation is important in energy saving, however, due to the availability of air conditioning it has not been a regular practice. To reduce air conditioning usage, thermal insulation must be installed under the roof. The study aims to determine the awareness level among professionals and terrace housing occupants on the importance of installing roof thermal insulation in terrace houses in Malaysia. Studies were made on government’s initiative towards roof thermal insulation, current practice by developers and architects, and terrace housing occupants’ knowledge on roof thermal insulation. The study was supported by review and analysis of previous research, government’s official publications, magazines, books and websites. The study found that professionals are aware on the importance of the roof thermal insulation for comfort and energy saving while occupants are very much less aware of its important. Keywords— roof thermal insulation, terrace houses, Malaysia, awareness, thermal comfort.
