This research aimed to produce models of hitting practice tools, which could be used in training beginner woodball athletes in Indonesia. A process of research and development was followed after the model of Gall, Gall, XXABSTRACT Borg (2007). Small-scale field trials were first conducted at Gerokgak Woodball Club (GWC), or Gerokgak Woodball Club (GWC) Buleleng-Bali, involving 10 athletes (5 males and 5 females). These were followed by large-scale field trials conducted in Pengkab Woodball Buleleng, or Pengkab Woodball Buleleng-Bali, involving 20 athletes (10 males and 10 females). Data gathered were both quantitative and qualitative. Quantitative descriptive analysis was employed with the (a) observation instruments/observations of the effectiveness of the tool development model; and (b) the athlete response questionnaire as part of the validation process. Qualitative descriptive analysis was applied to data gained from interviews, observations and fieldnotes in processing suggestions for improvement from material experts, media experts, and practitioners. This research produced an effective and appropriate hitting practice tool for beginners in woodball and a guide/instruction on how to use the tool. These wood practice products can be carried or moved in accordance with training needs (portable), can be used to train the consistency of the punch, increase the frequency of hitting exercises, in the open field (outdoor) or in the building (indoor). The wood practice tool can be used by athletes to practice short stroke, medium, long, or finishing/gating.

Covid 19 – living the experienceAs I sit at my desk at home in suburban Brisbane, following the dictates on self-isolationshared with so many around the world, I am forced to contemplate the limits of humanprediction. I look out on a world which few could have predicted six months ago. Mythoughts at that time were all about 2020 as a metaphor for perfect vision and a plea forit to herald a new period of clarity which would arm us in resolving the whole host offalse divisions that surrounded us. False, because so many appear to be generated by theuse of polarised labelling strategies which sought to categorise humans by a whole rangeof identities, while losing the essential humanity and individuality which we all share. This was a troublesome trend and one which seemed reminiscent of the biblical taleconcerning the tower of Babel, when a single unified language was what we needed tocreate harmony in a globalising world. However, yesterday’s concerns have, at least for the moment, been overshadowedby a more urgent and unifying concern with humanity’s health and wellbeing. For now, this concern has created a world which we would not have recognised in 2019. We relymore than ever on our various forms of electronic media to beam instant shots of thestreets of London, New York, Berlin, Paris, Hong Kong etc. These centres of ourworldly activity normally characterised by hustle and bustle, are now serenely peacefuland ordered. Their magnificent buildings have become foregrounded, assuming adignity and presence that is more commonly overshadowed by the mad ceaselessscramble of humanity all around them. From there however the cameras can jump tosome of the less fortunate areas of the globe. These streets are still teeming with peoplein close confined areas. There is little hope here of following frequent extended handwashing practices, let alone achieving the social distance prescribed to those of us in theglobal North. From this desk top perspective, it has been interesting to chart the mood as the crisishas unfolded. It has moved from a slightly distant sense of superiority as the news slowlyunfolded about events in remote Wuhan. The explanation that the origins were from alive market, where customs unfamiliar to our hygienic pre-packaged approach to foodconsumption were practised, added to this sense of separateness and exoticismsurrounding the source and initial development of the virus. However, this changed to agrowing sense of concern as its growth and transmission slowly began to reveal thevulnerability of all cultures to its spread. At this early stage, countries who took steps tolimit travel from infected areas seemed to gain some advantage. Australia, as just oneexample banned flights from China and required all Chinese students coming to studyin Australia to self-isolate for two weeks in a third intermediate port. It was a step thathad considerable economic costs associated with it. One that was vociferously

This article reports the findings of a scoping review of the use of small-sided games(SSGs) as a teaching or coaching pedagogy across four game categories. The selectioncriteria included empirical research available online, published after January 1 2006and prior to December 31, 2016, in an academic journal. The data were analysedthrough an inductive thematic approach which generated two themes: Developmentand Practical considerations. This review found that SSGs can be used as a deliberatepedagogy to elicit physiological responses for a training effect. Given that the variablesassociated with SSGs include pitch size, game intensity, and number of players, a keydetermining factor in the implementation of SSGs includes the objective of the practiceactivity.

Perfect vision for the path ahead? As I write this editorial it seems that once again, we stand on the threshold of yetanother significant date. The fortieth anniversary of ISCPES and also that of thisjournal, that has been the voice of the society’s contribution over that period, has beenand gone. This time it is 2020 that looms on the near horizon. It is a date that has longbeen synonymous with perfect vision. Many may perhaps see this as somewhat ironic, given the themes surrounding change and the directions it has taken, that have beenaddressed previously in these pages. Perfect vision and the clarity it can bring seem afar cry away from the turbulent world to which we seem to be becoming accustomed. So many of the divisions that we are facing today seem to be internal in nature and fardifferent from the largely: nation against nation; system against system strife, we canremember from the cold war era. The US, for example, seems to be a nation perpetuallyat war with itself. Democrats v Republicans, deplorables v elites - however you want tolabel the warring sides - we can construct a number of divisions which seem to put 50%of Americans implacably opposed to the other 50%. In the UK, it has been the dividearound the referendum to leave the European Union – the so-called Brexit debate.Nationally the division was 52% to 48% in favour of leaving. Yet the data can bereanalysed in, it seems, countless ways to show the splits within a supposedly ‘United’Kingdom. Scotland v England, London and the South East v the English regions, youngv old are just some of the examples. Similar splits seem to be increasing within manysocieties. Hong Kong has recently been the focus of world interest We have watchedthis erstwhile model of an apparently successful and dynamic compromise between two‘diverse’ systems, appear to tear itself apart on our television screens. Iran, Brazil,Venezuela are just three further examples of longstanding national communities whereinternal divisions have bubbled to the surface in recent times. These internal divisionsfrequently have no simple and single fault line. In bygone times, social class, poverty, religion and ethnicity were simple universal indicators of division. Today ways ofdividing people have become far more complex and often multi-dimensional. Socialmedia has become a means to amplify and repeat messages that have originated fromthose who have a ‘gripe’ based in identity politics or who wish to signal to all andsundry how extremely ‘virtuous’ and progressive they are. The new technologies haveproved effective for the distribution of information but remarkably unsuccessful in thepromotion of communication. This has been exemplified by the emergence andexploitation of Greta Thunberg a sixteen-year-old from Sweden as a spokesperson forthe ‘Extinction Rebellion’ climate change lobby. It is a movement that has consciouslyeschewed debate and discussion in favour of action. Consequently, by
