Previous research in sociology has shown that what is considered as sanity or mental health is described according to a social ideal. Mental health problems have been theorized as a deviance from such norms. Depression, in particular, has been the object of sociological contemplation due to its divergence from a Western social normativity focused on functionality, adaptation and productivity. This research adds to this body of work on depression as a deviation from social norms. It seeks to address a gap within the literature, by exploring the ways in which the “post-depressive” state may be defined in accordance with social norms. As such, it analyzes the links between “post-depression” and normality, from the perspective of individuals having lived with depression. 46 semi-structured interviews were conducted with Canadians individuals who have experienced depression. Results from our content analysis show that the absence of depression was often synonymous with normality and characterized by the following dimensions: a positive attitude; the potential to take action; functionality and performance; self-management; a positive relationship with others; and the notion of meaningful projects. Our results show that participants do not define the absence of depression following psychiatric or clinical indicators, as recorded in the DSM, and that they do not consider it to be a return to an anterior, pre-depression, state. Rather, post-depression is idealized, perceived as a state of unfailing conformity to social expectations and norms.

Mental illnesses affect 25% of any given population. The literacy of human population about mental health doesn’t not much the scientific knowledge available about Mental disorders (MDs). Developed countries invest in mental health less than their 9% of their GDPs. There is a contradiction, or discrepancy, between the incidence of MD in human population and how human societies react about them. This discrepancy has long been evident in the literature of medical sociology. In this article we analyze three medical sociology related concepts that have been coined to understand this contradiction: first, mental health literacy; second, stigma of mental ailments; and finally, the disclosure (or not) of the diagnosis of a mental illness. With this article we try to solve short use of these concepts in medical sociology in Spanish.

The article describes social complexity of the biographical accounts of those connected with a mental disorder diagnosis in Galicia, a Northwest Spanish Autonomous Community. 147 biographies associated with Mental Disorders diagnosis (MD) have been collected and gathered in three groups differently linked to these conditions. Our first group has lived with a diagnosis of MD for at least 10 years (65 interviews and data from 300 people). Our second cluster of people shares their lives with those with a MD diagnosis mainly with a family relative bound (19 interviews and data from 300 families). Our third group, gathers Galician mental health medical professionals from three mental health units and other mental health facilities which medically and administratively manage people with a MD diagnosis and their relatives (63 biographies). Using data from these biographies, we have constructed three interconnected biographical profiles early published (Torres Cubeiro 2009b) using a social systems theory approach based in Niklas Luhmann sociology.

This article presents the results of a qualitative research using in-depth interviews the last two years. Our research has focussed on how is constructed the perception of the human body by Social Workers and Psychology professionals in Galicia (Spain). This perception has been analyzed as an influent element in their work with alimentary disorders of the conduct. The research realized brings up three main conclusions. First, body is considered as the instrument used by diagnosed people to stop time and even reverse their personal evolution when they experience personal identity conflicts, especially among women patients. Second, professionals perceive that patients notice their bodies as their own building responsibilities in open contract with the society perceptions where our bodies appear somehow unreachable, ideal and under unreal parameters. Finally, body perception is driven by social imaginaries in which the moral (taboo or sin) and the biological are clearly predominant.

EnglishThe journals are basically the only channel through the scientists can make the result of their research know to their colleagues. Scientific journals select the information they publish and guarantee its quality by means of a double blind procedure of censorship by peers. If on the one hand this procedure seems logical as a method for including a study within a consolidated scientific field it is also true that it can function as a mechanism for censorship. If, furthermore, a scientific field such as pharmacology is intimately linked to the business interest of large companies then the companies and journals not only became providers of guidance, but also censors who conceal part of the truth and obstruct scientific advance to defend the economic interest of their patents.
