The serial concatenation of continuous phase modulations and convolutional codes has proven to perform well at low SNR when iteratively detected. The iterative detection algorithm assumes that the channel state is known at the receiver end. In this paper, the expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm is used as an alternative to pilot symbol aided channel estimation. The EM channel estimation is associated with the iterative detection and requires no increase in decoding complexity.

This paper discusses a recent iterative equalisation technique called "turbo equalisation". We specifically aim to develop a general model for a coded interleaved transmission system with a channel with memory. We show the general detection/decoding procedure before elaborating on a new alternative interference canceler-based method to reduce complexity. We use examples from DS/CDMA, and ISI channels to show performance under various situations.

Parallel interference cancellation (PIC) is a promising detection technique for multiuser code-division multiple access (CDMA) systems. It has previously been shown that weighted multistage PIC can be seen as a realisation of the steepest descent method for minimising the mean squared error (MSE). Following this interpretation, a unique set of weights, based on the eigenvalues of the correlation matrix, leads to the minimum achievable MSE for a short-code CDMA system. In this paper, we develop a method for finding a set of fixed weights, minimising the ensemble average of the MSE over all code-sets. Exact expressions of the ensemble averaged moments of the eigenvalues are derived. Simulation results show that a few stages can be sufficient for near-MMSE performance.

Advanced infrared (AIR) is a new standard of the Infrared Data Association (IRDA) to create wireless ad-hoc networks using a time division multiple access protocol (TDMA). The use of TDMA requires a physical layer providing approximate infrared channel symmetry and extended access-signaling range to reach all potentially interfering stations. We describe the underlying physical layer for AIR and derive transceiver parity conditions for achieving channel symmetry. In addition, we investigate the effects of channel asymmetry on the effectiveness of the access protocol.

This paper proposes lower layer protocols for a portable multimedia satellite communication system using a bi-directional satellite circuit. The point-to-point protocol is extended for controlling forward satellite channels based on a reservation scheme. Simulation results show that this control scheme enlarges the number of simultaneous accessing users and enhances TCP throughput.

This paper presents the architectural concepts behind a versatile VLSI device that maps ATM, IP, and/or traditional T1/T3 traffic streams into SONET/SDH transport signals ranging from OC-1 to OC-48/STM-16. Additional key features for effective system integration are on-chip support for add-drop multiplexing, digital cross-connect, and automatic protection switching functions. A roadmap discussing the applicability of the developed concepts for next-generation framers up to OC-192/STM-64 is also presented.

The tremendous growth in the demand for mobile services has resulted in an explosion in base station (BS) density and network complexity, making the conventional manual planning processes highly inefficient. An innovative approach for automatic BS placement is presented in this paper. The powerful optimization strategy forms the core of the automatic process, which determines the number of BS, their locations and configurations to achieve a high-quality network.

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has some technical advantages compared with single carrier transmission in high data rate applications and multipath fading channels. Differential modulation techniques are used in combination with OFDM to avoid any effort for channel estimation and equalization in the receiver. In this paper, the combination of differential modulation and convolutional channel coding is re-interpreted as a concatenated code in which the differential modulation scheme is the rate R=1 inner code and the convolutional code the outer code. Turbo decoding is applied in this case at the receiver resulting in a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) gain of more than 3.5 dB compared with classical soft decision Viterbi decoding.
