Physical layer authentication of Internet of Things wireless devices through permutation and dispersion entropy 通过排列和色散熵实现物联网无线设备的物理层认证

The concept of RF fingerprinting is that electronic devices can be identified and authenticated through their radio frequency emissions. RF fingerprinting has been applied to enhance the security of wireless networks based on WiFi or cellular communication standards. In this paper, we apply RF fingerprinting to IoT devices on the basis of entropy based statistical features called permutation entropy and dispersion entropy. The authentication accuracy obtained using these two features is compared to other statistical features including shannon entropy. A comparison of the obtained classification accuracy with different machine learning algorithms is performed. We demonstrate that IoT devices can be classified with great accuracy and that permutation entropy and dispersion entropy provides better accuracy than other statistical features.

IoT-enabled gamification for energy conservation in public buildings 基于物联网的公共建筑节能游戏化

Public buildings are a particularly challenging category of buildings to address for energy conservation due to lack of occupant motives and lack of individual accountability among others. In this paper, we describe an IoT-enabled gamification approach to change energy-consumption behaviors and reduce energy waste in public buildings. This will be assisted by the energy-consumption disaggregation at the device and at the individual employee levels through the design of an IoT infrastructure consisting of multi-channel smart meters, NFC tags, BLE beacons and the user smartphones. Based on our approach, employees will be motivated to improve their energy-consumption behaviors by means of peer-pressure based on a team competition and by means of direct (non-monetary) rewards.

GPS-free geolocation using LoRa in low-power WANs 在低功耗广域网中使用LoRa的无gps地理定位

Internet of Things (IoT) has been growing over the last few years in multiple applications and due to a growing need for geolocation and tracking capabilities, an innovative opportunity arises. Whereas geolocation is traditionally based on GPS units this paper reports on a design and implementation of a LoRaWAN tracking system which is capable exploiting transmitted packages to calculate the current position without the use of GPS or GSM. This is done using the low power technology LoRa where the geolocation is calculated applying a multilateration algorithm on the gateways timestamps from received packages. The whole system consisted of an end-node, four gateways, a server and a java application to store the obtained data in a MySQL database.

Secure group communication in constrained networks — A gap analysis 受限网络中的安全组通信——差距分析

In constrained networks, multicasting may be preferred over unicasting because of its better energy footprint. The inherent necessity of group management makes securing multicasting specially challenging. This work introduces a characterization of secure group communication and specifies the properties to be achieved. The security properties are derived from ISO/IEC 27000 and adopted to the specialties of multicasting. A validation of state-of-the-art security solutions in constrained networks against the criteria proves the need for future investigations and improvements, especially in the area of sender authentication.

Fast-paced development of a smart campus IoT platform 快速发展的智慧校园物联网平台

In this paper, we present our fast-paced development experience of a Smart Campus IoT platform built upon Commercial-Off-The-Shelf devices and Microsoft Azure cloud services. Different from a traditional, long development cycle of IoT platform, the design, implementation, and deployment of this Smart Campus IoT platform was completed within three months of time, with only four junior undergraduate students who had no prior knowledge about IoT. In addition to the fast development cycle, this platform is also made generic to enable the aggregation and open distribution of campus IoT data pertaining to student-life and academic activities. Two communities of campus data users, the data contributors who interact and control the IoT network to generate meaningful data and the application developers who utilize collected data to create innovative applications, can collaborate via such a virtual marketplace to harness the true power of IoT — the Open IoT Data.

An enhanced modified multi wall propagation model 一种改进的多壁传播模型

This article proposes a variation of Motley-Keenan multi-wall radio propagation model. Proposed model incorporates the polarization and angle of the incidence of the beam into this model. This is achieved by using image processing techniques to automatically detect the walls and their orientation from a blueprint image. Hence, various wall types with different attenuating characteristics can be defined. By acquiring the orientation of the walls, their attenuations are defined as a function of the angle of incidence. The main advantages of this implementation are (i) no 3D model of the environment is required (ii) manual preprocessing of the blueprint is eliminated (iii) Accuracy of the propagation model is improved. This approach hence simplifies and improves the radio propagation modeling for indoor environments without requiring a 3D model of the environment or defining walls with vector equations. To validate the model, practical measurements are compared against Motley-Kennan model, both with and without the angle of the incident. IT is concluded that this modification improved the accuracy of the Motley-Keenan model for estimating the path attenuation by an average of 0.5 dB per measurement location.

Comparison of edge computing implementations: Fog computing, cloudlet and mobile edge computing 边缘计算实现的比较:雾计算、云计算和移动边缘计算

When it comes to storage and computation of large scales of data, Cloud Computing has acted as the de-facto solution over the past decade. However, with the massive growth in intelligent and mobile devices coupled with technologies like Internet of Things (IoT), V2X Communications, Augmented Reality (AR), the focus has shifted towards gaining real-time responses along with support for context-awareness and mobility. Due to the delays induced on the Wide Area Network (WAN) and location agnostic provisioning of resources on the cloud, there is a need to bring the features of the cloud closer to the consumer devices. This led to the birth of the Edge Computing paradigm which aims to provide context aware storage and distributed Computing at the edge of the networks. In this paper, we discuss the three different implementations of Edge Computing namely Fog Computing, Cloudlet and Mobile Edge Computing in detail and compare their features. We define a set of parameters based on which one of these implementations can be chosen optimally given a particular use-case or application and present a decision tree for the selection of the optimal implementation.

A resource-based rule engine for energy savings recommendations in educational buildings 基于资源的教育建筑节能建议规则引擎

Raising awareness among young people on the relevance of behaviour change for achieving energy savings is widely considered as a key approach towards long-term and cost-effective energy efficiency policies. The GAIA Project aims to deliver a comprehensive solution for both increasing awareness on energy efficiency and achieving energy savings in school buildings. In this framework, we present a novel rule engine that, leveraging a resource-based graph model encoding relevant application domain knowledge, accesses IoT data for producing energy savings recommendations. The engine supports configurability, extensibility and ease-of-use requirements, to be easily applied and customized to different buildings. The paper introduces the main design and implementation details and presents a set of preliminary performance results.

The GAIA Project aims to deliver a comprehensive solution for both increasing awareness on energy efficiency and achieving energy savings in school buildings. In this framework, we present a novel rule engine that, leveraging a resource-based graph model encoding relevant application domain knowledge, accesses IoT data for producing energy savings recommendations. The engine supports configurability, extensibility and ease-of-use requirements, to be easily applied and customized to different buildings. A wide spectrum of applications based on Internet of things (IoTs) are recently emerging and have drawn considerable attention. IoT-based multimedia (IoTMM) applications have received relatively less attention. This article provides a review of the field of mobile IoTMM systems; it assesses the state of the art and then discusses some active areas of ongoing research, particularly issues related to video traffic prioritization, virtualization of network elements, mobility management, and security issues. A priority-based resource allocation strategy for IoTMM is also introduced. Overall, IoTMM presents challenges and opportunities for the stakeholders.

Low-cost static gesture recognition system using MEMS accelerometers 采用MEMS加速度计的低成本静态手势识别系统

The primary objective of the paper is to construct and test a low-cost, minimally supervised gesture recognition system which identifies static gestures efficiently and accurately. The proposed system uses ADXL335 accelerometer sensors which track the gestures and these sensors are interfaced with an Arduino ATMega 2560 micro-controller for data processing and gesture recognition. The software of the system implemented in the micro-controller, features a computationally feasible algorithm which requires only nominal resources to recognize the gestures. The paper further elucidates on minimizing the number of accelerometers to reduce the cost and power-consumption of the system. The performance of the system is assessed using static gestures in the alphabets of the American Sign Language (ASL) across data-sets obtained from 3 trained ASL signers. The average run-time efficiency of the proposed system with a maximum and minimum configuration of 5 and 2 accelerometers was found to be 95.3% and 87.0%, with the cost of these prototype systems being realized at 20 USD and 12.5 USD respectively. It was also found that the system can be trained for the static gestures of the alphabets in ASL under two minutes by a new-user with any system configuration. The authors also feel that the system is compatible with other IoT platforms for interoperability.
