I was in the seventh grade at the Newton Training School in Aubrey, Arkansas when the Supreme Court handed down Brown v. Board of Education on May 17, 1954 [Brown v. Board of Educ., 347 U.S. 483 (1954)]. My most powerful memory of the Brown decision is that I have nomemory of it being rendered or mentioned by my parents, teachers, or preachers. In my rural southern Black community, there was a conspiracy of silence about Brown. It was completely invisible.

This presentation was given in late 2020 in response to the ongoing racial justice uprising that had begun in May with the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police. As with educators across the nation since that time, teachers, administrators, and other officials in the Independent Schools Association of the Central States felt a discussion about how they might address racism with students and colleagues was in order. Moving forward, and as the nation emerges from the public health crisis of COVID-19 (another racial justice issue given the disproportionate impact of the pandemic on Black and Brown communities), these conversations will no doubt continue to loom large in independent school communities.

The Value of a Teacher’s Life 教师生命的价值
IF 0.7 Q3 EDUCATION & EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH Pub Date : 2021-03-01 DOI: 10.1086/713612
E. Kralovec, Maureen Johnston, Wendy Mehl, Jaxon Rickel, Joel Barrington, Glen Encinas, Kyndra Ortiz, Carmen Duffy
The new teacher reflections in “The Value of a Teacher’s Life” explore the current pressures teachers are under and the importance they have found in self-care while teaching during COVID-19. These are teachers struggling to stay healthy, wondering if teaching is sustainable, staying up late to meet the needs of students, and learning to teach in new ways. Their stories of isolation, mental health issues, personal loss, and illness speak to the trauma in our communities at this time.

Leading When You Can’t Breathe

In March 2020, schools along with businesses across the United States began to shut down as a result of COVID-19. In addition, the slayings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor would spark civil unrest during the polarizing election year with President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden on a crash course to be elected as the commander in chief of a divided nation. The following memoir centers my experience as a Black man in my first official year as a vice principal during this arduous period. In addition, I connect my time as a teacher-leader in 2016, highlighting the overall difficulty of leading while navigating individual and collective trauma as a member of a larger Black community.

David Luongo
Life as a school principal is intense. Burnout and high turnover are realities for many principals. Student deaths, school shootings, and other emotionally heavy scenarios can be challenging for administrators to navigate. Throughout this article David Luongo shares his personal encounters with burnout. Principal Luongo makes the claim that the educational system is lacking structures to support principals with the weight of the job, particularly in underserved communities of color. He argues that school districts need to design systems of support for administrators to work through the emotional stress and impacts of trauma that the school setting creates. Principal Luongo acknowledges the importance of individual resilience, but he argues that resilience in isolation is not enough to ensure the longevity and health of principals.

In “The Pandemic Is a Portal,” second-year teachers in a graduate-level education program share the extraordinary challenges of teaching during COVID-19, exploring the broader social and political forces that have shaped teacher experience during these trying times. In these reflections teachers grapple with imposed policies and practices that they view as inequitable and hurting their students and call for more equitable schooling practices.

Iracema Hromnik
Alternative education environments are places where students can either be bundled into a corner and pushed out of sight or creative, innovative spaces where students can recapture their sense of self as a successful student. Drawing on her experiences at a nonpublic school over the past 15 years, the author describes a unique setting and its impact on the students served as well as her development as an educator and school leader. The article explores the value of alternative education as well as the current limitations that need to be addressed to truly prepare already marginalized students for a world fraught with injustice. In the process of reflecting on the approach taken in the school setting where she has spent the majority of her career, the author comes to some key realizations about herself, her identity, and her resilience as a leader.

Introduction 介绍

Leader burnout is a national problem that results in principals leaving their positions at alarming rates. Continual changes in leadership make it difficult, if not impossible, for schools to realize sustained, equity-focused improvement. Leader stress levels have been exacerbated by both the global health pandemic and increasing racial and social unrest across our nation. Now more than ever, we need to amplify the voices of our school leaders in an effort to better understand their realities and the factors that contribute to their stress. This collection of leader narratives, written by graduates of the Principal Leadership Institute and the Leadership Support Program at University of California, Berkeley, describe stories of burnout and resilience. Models of raw honesty and persistent hope, these stories demonstrate how leaders can find ways to build resilience while also maintaining a critical stance regarding the education system, which often does not contribute to their long-term sustainability.
