Current policies on ageing in the global north emphasize that ‘ageing well’ is an individual responsibility, and tend to undervalue the social, economic and cultural context of ageing. The capability approach is well-suited to address the interplay between context and individual in later life. In this article, we therefore use the capability approach to explore how individual capabilities and contextual opportunities and restrictions contribute to being independent in later life. A qualitative methodology was adopted and we conducted in-depth interviews with 32 adults aged 65 and older, who lived independently and in sheltered housing. The study was carried out in two urban neighborhoods in the North of the Netherlands. Our findings underline that different pathways to independence are shaped by individual resources and capabilities, as well as by social and physical characteristics of the living environment. The three key capabilities that lead to being independent that we found were 1) to be comfortable at home and in the neighborhood; 2) to enjoy fulfilling social relations, and 3) to be mobile. The generated insights could be linked to policy initiatives with regard to age-friendly environments.

This paper analyses informal social support as a relevant factor in the process of maintaining the Spanish welfare state. There has been considerable theoretical discussion but little empirical work done to determine the factors that influence the provision of this type of support. More specifically, this article explores the factors that determine the provision of informal social aid in Spanish society at the beginning of the twenty-first century.Using data from the International Social Survey Programme (ISSP), we examine three kinds of informal social support offered by the Spanish: emotional, domestic and economical. The form of aid they offer most frequently is emotional support. Gender has a significant impact on emotional and domestic support, although we do not observe a gender effect in the case of economic support.

The elderly people in Cambodia are confronting multiple sources of vulnerability; these include living with poorness, health functional disabilities, health issues, social isolation, and limited opportunities to get involved. The government of Cambodia is concerning about the welfare of the elderly, as expressed in the National Development Strategy where government pledges its commitment to promoting the welfare of the elderly by protecting and ensuring that the elderly people are provided with basic needs. On the other hand, social protection in Cambodia has been largely neglected or addressed with inadequate tools and insufficient funds, which leads Cambodia to vulnerability. The principal purpose of this review is to produce a summary of overall social protection system and government associated with the elderly in Cambodia.

India is often interpreted as a country which is still influenced by the values of gerontocracy as well as joint family households. However modernizing trends are affecting the nooks and corners of every part of the society, and India is no left behind. The present paper seeks to explore the domain of physical and mental well being of the elderly population among the lower income households in the country. The findings of the paper show that in lower income households, nuclear families values are gradually penetrating, which is transforming the elderly- family interactions. It is seen that the elderly population which were previously acknowledged as the head of the household or one of the major decision maker are gradually sidelined or excluded from the household affairs. Awareness of being excluded is often a primary reason behind the degrading physical and mental well being of the elderly populace. They are often treated as an unwanted liability, which will be relieved only with their deaths. Case studies of 20 elderly respondents have been taken to explore the physical and mental health of the elderly populace among the lower income households.

This article presents the narratives of non-academic women who have made essential contributions to their community, and their own lives as well, drawing on their involvement in an adult school. We discuss how dialogic participation in lifelong learning activities may (or may not) prompt people to become active social agents in their communities. Through dialogic participation ordinary individuals whose voices have been always silenced, become active stakeholders in the community they belong to, making relevant contributions, which improve their own lives and the community as well. Drawing on personal narratives we re-construct the trajectories of these women as active social agents in their communities, looking on them through the lenses of their participation in lifelong learning activities. This evidence illustrates how dialogic adult education may become a way for undeserved groups to become empowered and make real changes in our society.
